Chapter 13: The Guest in Suite 1701

Chapter 13: The Guest in Suite 1701

Charles Sterling didn't hesitate.

"Lock down the resort."

The Head of Security immediately picked up his phone.

"Activate Executive Protocol Seven."

Within seconds, encrypted messages reached every security supervisor across the Sterling hotel network.

No guest would notice.

No panic would spread.

But every exit, elevator, marina, helipad, and private road at the Lake Geneva Grand Resort would quietly come under surveillance.

Victor Kane had chosen the wrong place to hide.

Twenty minutes later...

A corporate helicopter landed on the resort's private helipad.

Inside were Charles Sterling, Isabella, Marcus, Daniel Reeves, Detective Laura Bennett, and two members of the forensic team.

No reporters.

No police convoy.

No flashing lights.

Charles wanted answers before Victor realized he had been discovered.

As the helicopter descended, Isabella looked out over the lake.

The resort shimmered beneath the afternoon sun.

Families laughed by the waterfront.

Children chased one another across the gardens.

Couples enjoyed lunch on the terrace.

It looked peaceful.

She quietly said,

"My mother loved this place."

Charles smiled sadly.

"It was the first hotel we ever designed together."

He paused.

"That's why Victor chose it."

Inside the resort...

General Manager Helen Brooks greeted them personally.

"Mr. Sterling."

She handed Charles a secure room key.

"The guest registered under the name Thomas Reed."

"Suite 1701."

"Paid six months in advance."

"Never used room service."

"Never attended events."

"What did he do all day?"

Helen answered,

"He watched."

Security footage filled a nearby conference room.

Hour after hour...

The mysterious guest sat on the balcony overlooking the lake.

Reading.

Taking notes.

Watching staff.

Watching executives.

Watching guests.

He rarely left the suite.

When he did...

He walked slowly through the hotel as though studying every detail.

Marcus frowned.

"He was observing operations."

Daniel nodded.

"Not enjoying a vacation."

The detective reviewed the registration documents.

"They're fake."

Charles expected that.

"What about fingerprints?"

The forensic technician smiled.

"We have several."

"From coffee cups."

"Door handles."

"A wine glass."

Marcus looked hopeful.

"So we can identify him."

The technician hesitated.

"Only if he was careless."

Meanwhile...

Suite 1701 stood empty.

Housekeeping hadn't entered in three days.

Security unlocked the door.

The room looked immaculate.

Too immaculate.

The bed had been made perfectly.

No clothes.

No luggage.

No toiletries.

Nothing.

Almost.

Detective Bennett slowly walked across the suite.

Then stopped.

"Wait."

She knelt beside the desk.

A tiny scratch marked the polished wood.

Not accidental.

Intentional.

She pressed gently.

A hidden compartment slid open.

Inside...

There was only one object.

An old brass hotel key.

Attached to a faded leather tag.

Room 111

Grand Crescent Hotel.

Charles's face changed instantly.

"I know this key."

Everyone turned toward him.

"My wife and I stayed in Room 111 the night we signed the agreement expanding the company nationwide."

He gently picked up the key.

"This room hasn't existed for twenty years."

The old wing had been demolished during renovation.

Detective Bennett frowned.

"Then why leave this?"

Charles answered quietly.

"Because Victor wanted me to remember."

Daniel Reeves searched the hidden compartment again.

"There’s something else."

Folded beneath the false bottom lay a handwritten note.

The handwriting was elegant.

Precise.

It read:

You're looking in the wrong room.

Nothing more.

Marcus looked around.

"What does that mean?"

Charles didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he studied the old brass key.

Then he smiled.

Not because he was amused.

Because he finally understood Victor's game.

"Victor never wastes words."

He turned to Helen Brooks.

"When this resort was built..."

"Which suite replaced Room 111?"

Helen thought for a moment.

Then her eyes widened.

"Oh..."

"The numbering changed after the east wing renovation."

"What used to be Room 111..."

She swallowed.

"...is now the Presidential Heritage Suite."

Everyone looked toward the elevator.

The Heritage Suite.

The most exclusive room in the entire resort.

Reserved only for the Sterling family.

It had remained vacant for weeks.

Charles's expression hardened.

"Open it."

The elevator climbed in complete silence.

Floor after floor.

Nobody spoke.

Marcus's heartbeat pounded in his ears.

When the doors opened...

Two security officers were already waiting outside the Heritage Suite.

"The electronic lock shows no unauthorized entry," one officer reported.

Charles looked at the antique brass key.

"Don't use the electronic lock."

He inserted the old mechanical key into a nearly forgotten emergency keyhole hidden beneath a decorative brass plate.

It turned smoothly.

The heavy door clicked open.

The suite appeared untouched.

Fresh flowers.

Perfectly arranged furniture.

Sunlight streamed through enormous windows overlooking the lake.

Nothing seemed unusual.

Until Isabella noticed something.

"My mother's portrait..."

It hung slightly crooked.

Only by a fraction.

She stepped closer.

Lifted the painting from the wall.

Behind it...

A steel safe had been installed.

One no one in the family knew existed.

Detective Bennett examined it.

"No keypad."

"No fingerprint scanner."

"Only a combination dial."

Marcus stared.

"Victor installed a safe inside the family's private suite?"

Charles shook his head.

"No."

"It was built during the original construction."

"But only three people ever knew."

"My wife."

"Myself."

"And..."

He stopped speaking.

The realization hit him.

The architect.

Just then, Helen Brooks received an urgent call through her earpiece.

Her face drained of color.

She looked toward Charles.

"Sir..."

"What is it?"

"The original architect who designed this resort..."

Charles already knew the answer before she finished.

"...has been missing since yesterday."

The room fell silent.

Someone had disappeared.

A hidden safe had been discovered.

And whoever had installed it decades earlier...

May you like

Was no longer alive to explain why it existed.
