Chapter 8: The Audit That Destroyed the Illusion

Chapter 8: The Audit That Destroyed the Illusion
The lobby remained frozen.
More than a hundred guests, employees, and business partners watched in silence as Isabella Sterling walked across the polished Italian marble floor.
She neither hurried nor hesitated.
For eleven years, she had entered this hotel through the staff entrance whenever possible.
She preferred greeting housekeepers before investors.
She knew the names of bellmen's children.
She remembered birthdays.
She sent flowers when an employee lost a parent.
Most guests never noticed her.
The employees never forgot her.
Isabella stopped only a few feet from Isabella Hart.
The two women faced each other.
One wore confidence that had been borrowed.
The other carried authority that had never needed to be announced.
Isabella Hart forced a smile.
"So..."
"You're the mysterious owner."
"No," Isabella replied calmly.
"I'm one of the owners."
"My family built this long before I was born."
She glanced at the sapphire brooch pinned to Isabella Hart's jacket.
"That belongs to my mother."
Isabella Hart folded her arms.
"Marcus gave it to me."
"I don't care."
"It was a gift."
"It wasn't his to give."
The words were calm.
Measured.
But everyone in the lobby felt their weight.
Charles Sterling stepped forward.
"Ms. Hart."
She turned toward him.
"You have exactly one opportunity."
"Return every item removed from the Presidential Suite."
"Immediately."
She laughed.
"Or what?"
Charles didn't raise his voice.
"Or the police will inventory your luggage instead of my security team."
The smile disappeared from her face.
At that exact moment...
Two detectives entered through the revolving doors.
Behind them came three uniformed officers.
The Chicago Police Department had responded to a report involving suspected theft of high-value property.
Detective Laura Bennett approached the General Manager.
"Who reported the incident?"
Charles answered.
"I did."
He handed her a folder.
Inside were photographs.
Security footage.
A complete inventory of every item removed from the suite.
And proof of ownership for each family heirloom.
Detective Bennett skimmed the documents.
Then looked at Isabella Hart.
"Ma'am."
"I'm going to ask you one question."
"Did you remove these items from the Presidential Suite?"
Isabella Hart hesitated.
Then pointed toward Marcus on the security monitor still playing in the lobby.
"He gave me permission."
The detective nodded.
"We'll verify that."
Meanwhile...
Inside headquarters...
Marcus watched everything unfold on the live security feed.
Every word.
Every expression.
His attorney, Daniel Foster, had arrived only minutes earlier.
He looked increasingly uncomfortable.
"Marcus..."
"What?"
"You need to answer one question honestly."
Marcus didn't respond.
"When Ms. Hart entered the Presidential Suite..."
"Did you authorize her to remove company documents?"
"No."
"Family heirlooms?"
"No."
"Property deeds?"
Marcus stood abruptly.
"Of course not!"
Daniel slowly removed his glasses.
"Then she's committed theft."
Marcus's stomach tightened.
"And if she claims I told her to?"
Daniel looked directly into his eyes.
"Then investigators will want to know whether you conspired with her."
Marcus closed his eyes.
For the first time...
He realized his affair had become more than a marriage ending.
It had become a legal disaster.
Back in the hotel lobby...
The detectives opened the first suitcase.
A hush swept through the crowd.
Inside...
Velvet jewelry boxes.
Rare watches.
Antique silver.
Documents stamped CONFIDENTIAL.
Detective Bennett looked at the inventory sheet.
One by one...
Everything matched.
Until she reached the bottom.
"There should be one sapphire brooch."
She looked up.
"It isn't here."
Every eye turned toward Isabella Hart.
Her hand instinctively touched the brooch pinned to her jacket.
The detective smiled politely.
"I'll need that too."
With trembling fingers...
Isabella Hart slowly unpinned the brooch.
For the first time since entering the lobby...
She looked frightened.
She handed it to the detective.
Before anyone else could move...
Charles reached out.
But he didn't take it.
Instead...
He looked toward his daughter.
"Isabella."
She stepped forward.
The detective carefully placed the antique brooch into her hands.
For a long moment...
She simply stared at it.
Tears formed in her eyes.
"My mother wore this every Christmas."
She whispered softly.
"I thought I'd never see it again."
The lobby remained silent.
Several employees quietly wiped away tears.
Many had known Isabella's mother.
She had greeted staff by name until the day she died.
The General Counsel approached Charles.
"The audit team is ready."
Charles nodded.
"Begin."
Across the city...
The words echoed through headquarters.
"Begin the audit."
Within seconds...
Dozens of forensic accountants entered the executive finance floor.
Computer servers were secured.
Email archives were copied.
Financial records were frozen.
No file could be altered.
No invoice could disappear.
No payment could be hidden.
Marcus watched through the conference room windows as unfamiliar people entered his former office.
Boxes labeled FORENSIC REVIEW were stacked against the walls.
Hard drives were removed.
Filing cabinets were sealed.
The nameplate outside his office disappeared.
A maintenance employee replaced it with a temporary sign.
Executive Office — Restricted Access
Marcus whispered,
"It's over..."
"No."
The Chief Financial Officer quietly entered the room.
Marcus looked up hopefully.
David shook his head.
"It hasn't even started."
He placed another stack of folders on the table.
"There are over forty thousand financial transactions from the past eleven years."
Marcus frowned.
"So?"
"The auditors are reviewing every one."
David opened the first folder.
"Private jet flights to Monaco."
Another.
"Corporate entertainment in Aspen."
Another.
"Luxury apartment leased through a vendor."
Another.
"Consulting invoices paid to shell companies."
Marcus interrupted.
"I can explain those."
David nodded.
"I hope so."
"Because if you can't..."
He paused.
"...the Board won't be deciding your future."
"The courts will."
Marcus felt the room begin to spin.
Back at the Grand Crescent...
Isabella stood beside the lobby fountain.
She carefully returned the sapphire brooch to its velvet box.
Charles walked over quietly.
"You did well."
She smiled sadly.
"It doesn't feel like winning."
"It isn't."
"What is it?"
Charles looked around the magnificent hotel.
"Cleaning the foundation before rebuilding."
At that moment...
Daniel Reeves hurried toward them once again.
"Mrs. Sterling."
She turned.
"What is it?"
He handed her a tablet.
"It just came from the audit team."
She looked down.
The first forensic report had already arrived.
Her expression changed instantly.
Charles noticed.
"What did they find?"
She slowly looked up.
"There are payments..."
She paused.
"...that Marcus never authorized."
Charles frowned.
"What kind of payments?"
Isabella turned the screen toward him.
A series of transfers totaling nearly $48 million had been routed through offshore accounts over the past three years.
Each payment had been approved...
Using Marcus Ashford's executive digital signature.
But according to the system logs...
Marcus had been in another country when several of those approvals were issued.
Someone...
Had been signing documents in his name.
Charles narrowed his eyes.
"Who had access to his credentials?"
The General Counsel answered immediately.
"Only two people."
He looked directly at Isabella.
"Marcus..."
"...and Isabella Hart."
Across the city...
Marcus's phone suddenly rang.
The caller ID displayed one name.
ISABELLA HART
He answered immediately.
Before he could speak...
He heard panic.
"Marcus!"
"You have to help me!"
"They're saying someone stole millions of dollars!"
Marcus froze.
Then asked the question that changed everything.
May you like
"...What did you do?"
