Chapter 20: The Woman My Mother Trusted

Chapter 20: The Woman My Mother Trusted

The conference room remained silent long after Victoria Kane ended the call.

Charles Sterling was the first to speak.

"No."

His voice was firm.

"You are not meeting her alone."

Isabella slowly placed her phone on the table.

"I don't think I have a choice."

Detective Laura Bennett immediately disagreed.

"You always have a choice."

"But we don't have to let her know we've made one."

Within minutes...

The investigation team transformed the Sterling boardroom into a command center.

Maps covered the walls.

Cell tower records streamed across monitors.

Federal analysts worked beside Sterling cybersecurity specialists.

Daniel Reeves pointed toward the city's waterfront.

"The satellite call lasted forty-three seconds."

"That's enough to narrow the transmission."

A technician highlighted one location.

"Navy Pier."

Marcus frowned.

"Too public."

Detective Bennett nodded.

"Exactly."

"If Victoria wanted violence..."

"She wouldn't choose somewhere with hundreds of witnesses."

An hour later...

A second message arrived on Isabella's phone.

No greeting.

No signature.

Only an address.

The Conservatory Café

3:00 P.M.

Come exactly as your mother would have.

Charles quietly closed his eyes.

"Evelyn loved that café."

He looked toward Isabella.

"Every Friday afternoon."

"She always ordered Earl Grey tea."

"And lemon cake."

Isabella smiled sadly.

"I remember."

"I was six."

"Mom used to let me steal the strawberries off her dessert."

For a brief moment...

The investigation disappeared.

She simply remembered being a daughter.

At exactly three o'clock...

A black sedan stopped outside the old glass conservatory overlooking Lake Michigan.

Flowers bloomed beneath the iron arches.

Soft piano music drifted through the open windows.

Everything looked ordinary.

Almost peaceful.

Inside...

Only one customer remained.

An elegant elderly woman sat beside the window.

Silver hair.

Cream-colored coat.

Calm blue eyes.

A sapphire pendant rested around her neck.

The same replica seen on the bank cameras.

She slowly stood.

"You must be Isabella."

Her voice carried no anger.

No triumph.

Only exhaustion.

Isabella studied her carefully.

"You are Victoria Kane."

The woman nodded.

"I am."

She gestured toward the empty chair.

"Please."

"Sit."

Outside...

Charles, Detective Bennett, Daniel Reeves, and federal agents monitored the café from unmarked vehicles.

Tiny cameras hidden inside Isabella's brooch transmitted everything.

Victoria noticed immediately.

She smiled faintly.

"Evelyn would have done exactly the same thing."

She didn't seem offended.

Instead...

She looked almost proud.

A waiter arrived.

Without asking...

He placed Earl Grey tea before Isabella.

And lemon cake.

Exactly as Charles had remembered.

Victoria smiled.

"Your mother never changed her order."

Several moments passed before Isabella finally asked,

"Why did you call me?"

Victoria looked out toward the lake.

"Because your mother trusted me."

The sentence stunned everyone listening through the hidden earpiece.

Even Charles nearly dropped his headset.

Isabella frowned.

"You're Victor Kane's sister."

"Yes."

"And yet my mother trusted you?"

Victoria nodded slowly.

"Not because of my family."

"Despite my family."

She reached into her handbag.

Charles immediately whispered into the microphone,

"Don't touch anything."

Victoria smiled softly.

"I know you're listening, Charles."

Everyone froze.

She had guessed.

Without panic.

Without surprise.

She removed only a worn leather journal.

Dark blue.

Edges faded with age.

She carefully placed it on the table.

"I've protected this for twenty-three years."

Isabella looked down.

The initials on the cover read:

E.S.

"Evelyn Sterling."

Victoria gently pushed the journal across the table.

"Your mother gave it to me three days before she disappeared."

"She said..."

Victoria paused.

"...'If Charles ever loses faith in the people he loves, give this to Isabella instead.'"

Outside...

Charles closed his eyes.

Tears filled them.

"Evelyn..."

He whispered.

"You knew me too well."

Isabella carefully opened the journal.

Most pages contained handwritten notes.

Business ideas.

Family memories.

Travel plans.

Pressed flowers.

Recipes.

The ordinary moments of an extraordinary woman.

Then...

Near the back...

A folded envelope slipped free.

Across the front was written:

Charles — Forgive Yourself

Charles could barely breathe.

Victoria quietly explained.

"Your mother believed the greatest danger wasn't losing the company."

"It was you blaming yourself forever."

Isabella turned another page.

A photograph fell into her lap.

It showed Evelyn.

Victoria.

Harold Whitmore.

Arthur Collins.

Standing together.

Laughing.

There was no Victor Kane.

No conspiracy.

Only four friends.

Victoria smiled sadly.

"We weren't enemies."

"We were trying to stop one."

Isabella looked up.

"Who?"

Victoria slowly reached into the back cover of the journal.

This time...

She removed a tiny flash drive.

"It contains every document Harold couldn't keep."

"Every financial transfer."

"Every false identity."

"Every secret account."

Detective Bennett's voice came urgently through Isabella's hidden earpiece.

"Ask her who ordered Evelyn's death."

Isabella looked directly into Victoria's eyes.

"Who killed my mother?"

Victoria didn't answer immediately.

Instead...

She looked toward the café entrance.

Her expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

She whispered,

"We're too late."

The front door slowly opened.

An elderly man entered wearing a charcoal suit and carrying a polished wooden cane.

His gray hair matched the partially restored image from Evelyn's videotape.

The scar beneath his left ear was unmistakable.

Richard Holloway.

The attorney everyone believed had died nearly two decades earlier.

He removed his hat.

Smiled politely.

Then looked directly at Charles through the café window.

As though he had known exactly where everyone was hiding.

His calm voice echoed through the silent café.

"Charles..."

"You've been chasing the wrong Kane all along."

He turned toward Isabella.

Then gently tapped the flash drive lying on the table.

"If you plug that into any computer..."

May you like

"...every person you love becomes my next target."
