Chapter 12: The Message Victor Kane Left Behind

Chapter 12: The Message Victor Kane Left Behind
No one in the boardroom moved.
Victor Kane's face filled the screen.
His silver hair was immaculate.
His tailored charcoal suit looked as though he had stepped out of a board meeting only moments before.
He smiled—not warmly, but with the confidence of a man who believed he was always ten moves ahead.
Then he began to speak.
"Good evening, Charles."
"If you're watching this..."
"...then you've finally found the file I wanted you to find."
He leaned back in his chair.
"I imagine your lawyers are gathered around you."
"The Board is probably there."
"And if everything unfolded as I predicted..."
He smiled faintly.
"So is Marcus Ashford."
Marcus felt a chill run through his body.
How could Victor have known?
The recording continued.
"You've spent decades believing your greatest strength was secrecy."
"Hidden trusts."
"Layered ownership."
"Anonymous investments."
Victor slowly shook his head.
"You taught the business world that the Sterling family could never be attacked directly."
"So I didn't attack your company."
"I attacked your certainty."
Charles watched in complete silence.
He remembered the last time he had seen Victor Kane.
Fourteen years earlier.
Victor had offered nearly five billion dollars to acquire the Sterling hospitality portfolio.
Charles had refused.
Victor smiled then exactly as he smiled now.
"One day," Victor had said,
"You'll discover there are more ways to buy a company than writing a check."
Charles had dismissed the comment.
Now...
He understood.
Back on the screen...
Victor folded his hands.
"I searched for weaknesses."
"Financial weakness?"
He smiled.
"You had none."
"Legal weakness?"
Again he smiled.
"Your lawyers were too good."
"So I searched somewhere else."
He looked directly into the camera.
"I searched for people."
The room grew quieter.
Victor continued.
"I discovered something fascinating."
"Charles Sterling had only one daughter."
"A daughter who believed love should be honest."
"A daughter willing to hide her fortune to prove a man loved her."
He laughed softly.
"What a beautiful weakness."
Marcus felt sick.
He turned toward Isabella.
"I'm sorry..."
She didn't answer.
Her eyes remained fixed on the screen.
Victor continued.
"So I waited."
"I knew ambitious men eventually become visible."
"I knew someone would eventually stand beside Isabella."
"And when Marcus Ashford appeared..."
Victor paused.
"I watched."
The cybersecurity team checked the video's metadata.
"Recorded..."
The analyst looked surprised.
"...almost six years ago."
Charles frowned.
"So he had already identified Marcus."
Victor continued.
"Marcus wasn't a criminal."
"He wasn't dishonest."
"He was simply..."
He smiled.
"...human."
"He loved success."
"He loved admiration."
"And eventually..."
"He loved hearing his own name more than he loved hearing hers."
Marcus lowered his head.
Every sentence hurt because every sentence contained some truth.
Victor stood and walked toward a large window in his own office.
Behind him stretched the skyline of New York.
"I never intended to recruit Marcus."
"I recruited someone else."
Everyone looked at the screen.
Victor smiled.
"Someone who understood ambition."
"Someone patient."
"Someone beautiful."
"Someone willing to become exactly what Marcus wanted."
The image changed.
A photograph appeared beside Victor.
A much younger Isabella Hart.
Standing beside Victor Kane at a charity gala.
The date:
Six Years Earlier.
Another photograph.
Victor introducing Isabella to influential investors.
Another.
Private business dinners.
Luxury events.
International conferences.
Marcus whispered,
"...She knew him all along."
Detective Laura Bennett's phone rang simultaneously.
She was still inside Interview Room Two with Isabella Hart.
She immediately opened the newly recovered photographs.
Then quietly placed them on the table.
Isabella Hart looked down.
She closed her eyes.
There was no point denying it anymore.
"Who is Victor Kane to you?"
The detective asked.
Long silence.
Finally...
"My guardian."
The detective frowned.
"Your guardian?"
"My parents died when I was fifteen."
"Victor funded my education."
"He gave me internships."
"He introduced me to executives."
"And eventually..."
She stopped.
"He offered me a job."
"What kind of job?"
Isabella Hart whispered,
"To get close to Marcus."
Back in the boardroom...
The recording continued.
Victor laughed quietly.
"Before you become angry with Isabella Hart..."
"Understand something."
"I never lied to her."
"I simply gave her an opportunity."
"She could have walked away at any time."
The room remained silent.
"Instead..."
"She chose ambition."
Charles slowly shook his head.
"No."
The room turned toward him.
"This isn't ambition."
"It's manipulation."
Victor seemed almost to hear him.
He smiled again.
"Charles..."
"You'll call me a monster."
"Perhaps I am."
"But don't pretend your family is innocent."
"You raised your daughter to hide her identity."
"You built an empire behind masks."
"I simply..."
He paused.
"...created another mask."
The video neared its end.
Victor looked directly into the camera.
"If this recording is playing..."
"Then one of two things has happened."
"Either I succeeded..."
"...or Isabella Sterling finally remembered who she truly is."
He smiled.
"If it's the second..."
"I congratulate her."
"For she will become a far more dangerous leader than her father ever was."
The screen went black.
Silence.
No one spoke for almost an entire minute.
Finally...
Charles looked toward Isabella.
"I'm sorry."
She frowned.
"For what?"
"I blamed you."
She shook her head.
"No."
"You warned me years ago."
"I just didn't listen."
Marcus stood slowly.
His face looked older than it had only twenty-four hours earlier.
"I destroyed my marriage..."
"...for someone who was sent to destroy my company."
Charles corrected him gently.
"No."
"Not your company."
Marcus nodded painfully.
"Our company."
Then looked toward Isabella.
"No..."
He swallowed hard.
"Your family."
At that moment...
The conference room doors opened.
The Head of Security hurried inside.
"Mr. Sterling."
Charles turned.
"What happened?"
"We've located Victor Kane."
Every person in the room stood.
"Where?"
The Head of Security looked down at the report.
"He isn't in New York."
"He isn't in London."
"He isn't in Singapore."
Charles narrowed his eyes.
"So where is he?"
The security chief answered with visible disbelief.
"He checked into one of our resorts three days ago..."
"...using a false identity."
The room froze.
"He never left."
Charles stared at the report.
Victor Kane...
The man who had spent years trying to infiltrate the Sterling empire...
Wasn't hiding across the world.
May you like
He was already inside it.
