Chapter 17: The Truth About Evelyn

Chapter 17: The Truth About Evelyn
The room fell silent.
Charles Sterling gripped the phone so tightly that his knuckles turned white.
His voice trembled.
"...What did you say?"
Harold Whitmore answered quietly.
"I said someone ordered Evelyn's death."
Marcus, Isabella, Detective Laura Bennett, and the entire investigative team stood frozen.
No one dared interrupt.
Charles closed his eyes.
"For twenty-two years..."
"I believed she died from a heart attack."
Harold sighed.
"So did everyone else."
"Because that's exactly what they wanted you to believe."
Detective Bennett immediately signaled the technicians.
"Trace the call."
One analyst shook his head.
"It's encrypted."
"Military-grade routing."
"He's bouncing through multiple satellite relays."
Harold chuckled softly.
"I taught the system years ago."
"You won't find me that way."
Charles ignored everyone else.
"Harold..."
"If you knew..."
"...why didn't you come to me?"
A long silence followed.
Finally Harold answered.
"Because Arthur Collins already did."
The room became still.
Charles lowered his head.
"I accused him."
"Yes."
"You destroyed the only witness willing to stand beside your wife."
Charles shut his eyes in pain.
"I know."
"No."
Harold's voice remained calm.
"You know now."
"You didn't then."
Isabella stepped closer to the phone.
"Uncle Harold..."
The old man laughed softly.
"You still remember calling me that."
Tears filled her eyes.
"You disappeared."
"I had to."
"Why?"
"Because after Arthur was blamed..."
"I became the next target."
Marcus frowned.
"Targeted by who?"
Harold answered immediately.
"The man who couldn't afford for Evelyn to tell Charles the truth."
Inside the hidden office...
Detective Bennett searched Harold's notebooks.
One page had been bookmarked.
She opened it.
Across the top was written:
If I disappear before Charles learns the truth...
She quickly read aloud.
Never begin with Victor Kane.
Victor profits from chaos.
He does not create it.
Charles looked toward the notebook.
The exact same warning Evelyn had written.
Harold continued speaking.
"Victor entered the story later."
"The first betrayal happened inside Sterling Holdings."
Marcus whispered,
"An insider..."
The detective turned another page.
There was a list of names.
Some were crossed out.
Some had notes beside them.
At the bottom...
Only one name remained uncrossed.
No explanation.
Just a name.
Richard Holloway
No one in the room recognized it.
Except Charles.
His face instantly changed.
Marcus noticed.
"You know him."
Charles nodded slowly.
"He was..."
"My father's attorney."
Silence.
The room seemed to stop breathing.
Harold spoke again.
"Not just his attorney."
"He drafted the original Sterling Trust."
"He knew every ownership structure."
"He knew every hidden asset."
"He knew exactly how your family protected itself."
Detective Bennett searched federal records.
Within seconds...
Richard Holloway's profile appeared.
Former corporate attorney.
Retired eighteen years earlier.
Status:
Deceased.
Charles frowned.
"He died."
Harold immediately replied.
"No."
"He disappeared."
"The death certificate was forged."
Everyone looked at the screen.
The detective quietly said,
"That's the second person officially declared dead..."
"...who apparently isn't."
Harold continued.
"Evelyn discovered the forged financial records."
"Arthur discovered the construction records."
"I discovered the trust modifications."
"Separately..."
"We each found one piece."
"Together..."
"We discovered the conspiracy."
Charles whispered,
"My God..."
The hidden office suddenly became much more important.
The forensic team searched every cabinet.
Every notebook.
Every computer.
Finally...
One analyst found a locked steel drawer.
Inside...
Only a single VHS cassette remained.
Its label read:
Evelyn — Final Interview
Date:
Three Days Before Her Death
Charles stared at the tape.
"I've never seen this."
Harold's voice softened.
"Because she mailed it to me."
"She said if anything happened..."
"I was to keep it hidden until Isabella was ready."
Detective Bennett immediately found an old VHS player in the storage cabinet.
The tape was carefully inserted.
Static filled the television screen.
Then...
Evelyn Sterling appeared.
She looked healthy.
Smiling gently.
She wasn't speaking to Charles.
She was looking directly into the camera.
Into the future.
"My name is Evelyn Sterling."
"If anyone besides Harold is watching this..."
"...then I've probably failed."
Charles felt tears rolling down his face.
Evelyn continued.
"I am not afraid of dying."
"I'm afraid..."
"...that Charles will blame the wrong person."
Charles covered his mouth.
For twenty-two years...
That was exactly what he had done.
She continued.
"Arthur is innocent."
"Harold is innocent."
"Victor Kane is dangerous..."
"...but he is not the one standing inside our family."
The room went completely silent.
Then Evelyn spoke the sentence that changed the investigation forever.
"I know who betrayed us."
She reached into a folder.
Slowly removed a photograph.
Held it toward the camera.
The image was grainy.
No one could clearly see the face.
The tape suddenly distorted.
Static.
Crackling audio.
The picture froze.
Then...
The tape snapped.
The screen went black.
"No!"
Charles shouted.
The forensic technician immediately ejected the cassette.
The magnetic film had torn apart.
The crucial final seconds...
The part showing the traitor's face...
Were gone.
Just then...
The telephone rang again.
Harold's voice returned.
"They found the tape."
Charles answered desperately.
"The end is destroyed!"
Harold was silent for several seconds.
Then he quietly replied,
"I know."
"I destroyed that section myself."
Everyone in the room stared at the phone in disbelief.
Charles whispered,
"You... destroyed the evidence?"
Harold answered with one final sentence before the line went dead.
"I destroyed the face..."
"...because the person in that photograph is someone Isabella still loves."
The call disconnected.
No one moved.
The investigation had become even more terrifying.
Because the traitor wasn't just part of the Sterling family's past.
May you like
He—or she—was someone still close enough to break Isabella's heart all over again.
