Chapter 18: The Man I Could Never Hate

Chapter 18: The Man I Could Never Hate
No one moved after the call ended.
Harold Whitmore's final words lingered in the air.
"I destroyed the face... because the person in that photograph is someone Isabella still loves."
The silence was unbearable.
Marcus slowly looked toward Isabella.
His voice was barely audible.
"...Is it me?"
Isabella stared at the broken videotape.
"I don't know anymore."
Charles stood motionless.
His mind raced through every person his daughter had ever loved.
Him.
Her late mother.
Marcus.
Arthur Collins.
Harold Whitmore.
Could Harold have meant any of them?
Or someone else entirely?
Detective Laura Bennett broke the silence.
"We still have part of the tape."
She carefully examined the damaged film.
"The last few seconds are gone."
"But everything before the break may be recoverable."
The forensic technician nodded.
"We'll reconstruct every remaining frame."
Meanwhile...
At Sterling Headquarters...
The envelope Evelyn had addressed to Isabella ten years earlier was undergoing forensic analysis.
A document examiner looked up from his microscope.
"Interesting..."
His supervisor walked over.
"What is it?"
"There were two letters inside."
"What?"
"The second page was written with disappearing ink."
Chemical developers were carefully applied.
Slowly...
Words began emerging across the blank page.
The technicians watched in amazement.
A hidden message had been waiting ten years to be read.
Back at the resort...
Daniel Reeves hurried into the room.
"Mrs. Sterling."
"We've received something from headquarters."
He handed Isabella a secure tablet.
She opened the newly scanned page.
Her eyes widened.
"My mother's handwriting..."
Charles stepped beside her.
Together they read.
If Harold believes I am gone because of natural causes, do not correct him.
Charles frowned.
"What?"
Isabella continued.
The fewer people who know the truth, the safer they will be.
Everyone looked at one another.
Detective Bennett whispered,
"There's more."
The person trying to destroy our family does not yet know what I discovered.
Charles's breathing quickened.
Evelyn had known something before her death.
Something she had hidden.
The message continued.
If you are reading this years later, then that secret probably survived.
Charles looked confused.
"What secret?"
Isabella reached the bottom of the page.
There...
One final sentence had appeared.
The original trust was never changed.
Marcus frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Charles didn't answer immediately.
Instead...
He slowly sat down.
Then smiled.
A real smile.
For the first time in days.
"I understand."
Everyone turned toward him.
"Our enemies spent decades trying to steal ownership."
He looked toward Isabella.
"But they were chasing the wrong documents."
The General Counsel immediately understood.
"The controlling trust..."
Charles nodded.
"...was never kept at headquarters."
"Never inside the hotels."
"Never inside our law firm."
Marcus looked stunned.
"Then where?"
Charles smiled faintly.
"Evelyn moved it."
"Twenty-three years ago."
Detective Bennett leaned forward.
"Where?"
Charles looked toward the old music box sitting on the mantel.
"The one place nobody would search."
The music box.
Everyone stared at it.
It looked ordinary.
Small.
Silver.
Beautiful.
Isabella slowly picked it up again.
She turned it over.
This time...
She noticed something she had never seen before.
A tiny keyhole beneath the velvet lining.
Daniel found the miniature key stored inside the safe.
It fit perfectly.
A soft click echoed.
The bottom compartment opened.
Inside...
Not legal papers.
Not cash.
Just a single safety-deposit receipt.
Bank:
First National Trust of Chicago
Deposit Box:
001
Owner:
Evelyn Sterling
Detective Bennett smiled.
"So the real trust..."
Charles nodded.
"Has probably been sitting inside a bank vault all these years."
Victor Kane.
Harold Whitmore.
Arthur Collins.
Isabella Hart.
Marcus.
All of them had been chasing ownership inside the company.
But Evelyn had quietly moved the most important document years earlier.
Marcus looked at Isabella.
"I'm sorry."
She met his eyes.
"I know."
He shook his head.
"No."
"You don't."
"I betrayed you."
"I believed this empire made me powerful."
He looked around the room.
"I spent years protecting something..."
"...that was never mine."
Before Isabella could answer...
The forensic team interrupted.
"We recovered one frame from the damaged videotape."
Everyone rushed toward the monitor.
The restored image appeared slowly.
It was blurry.
Incomplete.
Only half of a man's face remained visible.
Gray hair.
A scar running beneath his left ear.
Charles frowned.
"I know that scar."
Detective Bennett enhanced the image.
Marcus suddenly stepped forward.
"I've seen him."
Everyone turned.
"Where?"
Marcus looked toward Charles.
"At our wedding."
Silence.
Marcus continued.
"I thought he was one of your guests."
Charles slowly shook his head.
"He wasn't invited."
The detective enlarged the recovered frame again.
Then matched it against old company photographs.
The computer processed dozens of faces.
Finally...
One profile matched.
99.2% probability.
Name:
Richard Holloway
The attorney everyone believed had died eighteen years earlier.
Charles whispered,
"So he never disappeared..."
Detective Bennett nodded grimly.
"He simply changed identities."
Just then...
A security officer burst into the room.
"Mr. Sterling!"
"What is it?"
"We just received confirmation from the bank."
Charles stood.
"About Deposit Box 001?"
"Yes."
The officer swallowed hard.
"It was opened..."
"...this morning."
The room froze.
Charles looked at the timestamp.
The vault had been accessed less than two hours earlier.
Someone had reached Evelyn's final secret...
May you like
Just before they did.
