Chapter 1 – The Flash Drive

Chapter 1 – The Flash Drive

The silence lasted exactly three seconds.

Then every sound on campus seemed to disappear at once.

More than five hundred graduates, professors, parents, reporters, and university staff stood frozen beneath the brilliant afternoon sun, staring at the young woman standing alone behind the podium.

Emily Bennett rested one hand on the microphone.

The other held a tiny black flash drive between two fingers.

No one moved.

Not even Richard Bennett.

The man who had spent twenty-two years controlling every room he entered suddenly looked as though the ground beneath him had disappeared.

His face drained of color.

His confident posture faltered.

His eyes locked onto the flash drive with unmistakable terror.

Emily noticed.

For the first time in her life...

Her father was afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Richard forced a smile.

It looked painful.

"Emily," he said loudly, attempting to sound calm. "You're emotional. Come down from that stage."

Emily ignored him.

Instead, she looked across the enormous courtyard.

Rows of graduates.

Families holding flowers.

Children sitting on shoulders.

University photographers.

Local reporters covering commencement.

Hundreds of smartphones already recording.

Perfect.

Exactly as she had hoped.

She leaned closer to the microphone.

"My father told all of you that I cheated."

Her voice echoed through every speaker on campus.

"He said I stole research."

"He said I manipulated professors."

"He called me a fraud."

She paused.

"I would like to answer him."

No one interrupted.

Even the security officers stopped walking.

Richard's heartbeat pounded inside his ears.

How?

He had searched everywhere.

Emily's apartment.

Her dormitory.

Her storage locker.

Her car.

Even her mailbox.

The flash drive had disappeared four years earlier.

His investigators had spent nearly eighty thousand dollars trying to locate it.

Nothing.

He had finally convinced himself she had destroyed it.

Clearly...

She hadn't.

Emily lifted the drive.

"This," she said quietly, "contains twenty-two years of my family's secrets."

A collective gasp rolled across the audience.

Professor Caroline Hughes slowly stepped beside the podium.

She didn't interrupt.

She simply stood nearby.

Watching.

Protecting.

Richard pointed toward security.

"Stop her!"

"No one is authorized to make accusations during university ceremonies!"

Two officers exchanged uncertain looks.

Professor Hughes answered first.

"She's a graduate."

"This microphone belongs to every student today."

Richard glared.

"You have no idea what she's about to say."

Professor Hughes met his eyes.

"Neither do you."

Emily smiled faintly.

"Actually..."

"My father knows exactly what I'm about to say."

She turned toward him.

"Because he spent four years trying to make sure I never said it."

Silence.

Then—

"No..." whispered her mother.

Margaret Bennett grabbed Richard's sleeve.

"We have to stop this."

Richard shook her away.

Too many cameras.

Too many witnesses.

Touching Emily now would only make everything worse.

Emily inserted the flash drive into the university podium computer.

The monitor lit up.

Loading...

Loading...

Loading...

Richard felt cold sweat forming beneath his collar.

Please...

Don't.

The first folder appeared.

BENNETT FINANCIAL RECORDS

Then another.

PRIVATE RECORDINGS

Another.

MEDICAL FILES

Another.

COURT DOCUMENTS

Then—

DNA RESULTS

The crowd erupted into whispers.

Emily clicked nothing.

She simply let everyone see the folder names.

Because the names alone were enough.

Richard's breathing became shallow.

Only three people knew those folders existed.

Him.

Margaret.

And...

Someone else.

Someone who had betrayed them.

Emily spoke again.

"I won't play everything today."

More whispers.

"But I will show everyone why my family wanted me expelled before graduation."

She opened the first video.

The courtyard speakers crackled.

Static.

Then security footage appeared.

Date:

May 18

Four years earlier.

The recording showed Richard Bennett inside his private office.

He wasn't alone.

A man in an expensive navy suit handed him a thick envelope.

Richard counted stacks of cash.

Nearly two hundred thousand dollars.

The audio became clear.

"If Emily gets the scholarship..."

"We lose everything."

Richard nodded.

"I'll make sure she never receives it."

The suited man smiled.

"And the university?"

"I've already paid Professor Donovan."

Another envelope changed hands.

The audience gasped.

Professor Hughes looked horrified.

"Professor Donovan..."

She whispered.

"He chaired the scholarship committee."

Emily nodded.

"Yes."

"He did."

Richard shouted.

"That video is fake!"

"It was edited!"

Emily calmly opened another file.

"This one?"

The next video appeared.

Same office.

Different date.

Professor Donovan himself entered carrying Emily's application file.

"I lowered her evaluation exactly like you asked."

Richard laughed.

"No one will ever know."

Professor Donovan accepted another envelope.

Then signed a document.

The entire courtyard erupted.

Students shouted.

Parents pointed.

Faculty members stared at one another in disbelief.

One professor covered her mouth.

"Oh my God..."

Professor Hughes turned slowly toward Richard.

"Is this true?"

Richard didn't answer.

He couldn't.

Emily closed the video.

"I lost that scholarship."

"I worked two jobs because of it."

"I nearly dropped out."

She looked toward the graduating class.

"I thought I wasn't good enough."

"I thought I had failed."

"I was wrong."

"My father bought my failure."

Her mother suddenly screamed.

"Stop lying!"

Emily clicked another file.

Audio only.

Margaret Bennett's voice filled every speaker.

"If she becomes successful, she'll leave us."

Richard answered.

"Then we'll make sure she believes she's worthless."

The recording ended.

Margaret collapsed into a nearby chair.

The courtyard had become absolute chaos.

Parents shouted.

Students cried.

Reporters rushed forward.

Every television camera pointed directly at the Bennett family.

Phones streamed live.

Millions of viewers would soon see this.

Richard's lawyer, Daniel Morris, pushed through the crowd.

"Turn that off!"

"This is illegal!"

Emily looked directly at him.

"I have certified copies."

"I also submitted duplicates to three attorneys yesterday morning."

Daniel froze.

"You..."

Emily smiled.

"If anything happened to me today..."

"The files were scheduled to become public automatically."

Richard's knees weakened.

She had planned everything.

Professor Hughes quietly asked,

"Emily..."

"How long have you been preparing this?"

Emily looked at the flash drive.

"Four years."

"I promised myself that if I survived university..."

"I would tell the truth on the day they could never take my degree away."

Professor Hughes felt tears forming.

"You carried this alone?"

Emily nodded.

"My entire life."

Richard suddenly lunged toward the podium.

"Give me that drive!"

Before he reached the steps—

Campus security intercepted him.

Two officers restrained him.

"Sir."

"You need to calm down."

"Let me go!"

"You don't understand!"

"No," one officer answered.

"I think we finally do."

Emily removed the flash drive.

"I've only shown less than one percent of what's here."

Everyone stared.

Less than one percent?

What else could possibly be inside?

She answered the unspoken question.

"There are 4,372 files."

The number echoed through the speakers.

Four thousand...

Three hundred...

Seventy-two.

The audience collectively inhaled.

Richard stopped struggling.

Impossible.

There weren't supposed to be that many.

Unless...

Emily had found the archive.

The hidden archive.

Not just his files.

Everything.

Twenty-two years.

Every crime.

Every payment.

Every secret.

Every lie.

Emily slowly looked at Ethan.

Her younger brother had lost his smug smile.

His hands trembled.

He whispered only one sentence.

"You weren't supposed to know."

Emily answered into the microphone.

"I know much more than you think."

Then she looked directly into the crowd.

"I've spent twenty-two years believing I was the problem."

"I was told I was unwanted."

"I was told I ruined this family."

She took a slow breath.

"The truth..."

"...is that I was never their daughter."

The courtyard fell into stunned silence.

Even Richard's eyes widened.

Emily had gone off script.

This wasn't supposed to be revealed.

Not yet.

Professor Hughes stared at her.

"What did you just say?"

Emily held up another folder.

Its name appeared on the giant projection screen.

PROJECT EVE

Below it—

CONFIDENTIAL

SEALED BY COURT ORDER

Richard screamed louder than anyone had ever heard.

"EMILY, DON'T OPEN THAT!"

Emily rested her finger on the mouse.

Then smiled.

"You've spent twenty-two years making sure no one learned who I really am."

She looked directly into her father's terrified eyes.

May you like

"I think it's finally time everyone met my real family."
