Chapter 12 – The Man Behind My Childhood

Chapter 12 – The Man Behind My Childhood

The bunker fell silent.

No one spoke.

No one breathed.

The masked man's final words echoed through Room E-12.

"I've been raising you since the day you disappeared."

Emily felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath her feet.

"No..."

She whispered the word without realizing it.

"That's impossible."

The man tilted his head slightly.

"I expected you to deny it."

His voice was calm.

Measured.

Almost fatherly.

Agent Michael Harris stepped in front of Emily.

"Turn off the transmission."

The technicians worked frantically.

"It's not coming from the satellite."

"Then where?"

"It's inside the bunker."

Everyone turned toward the dark hallway beyond Room E-12.

The voice wasn't coming from somewhere else.

It was coming from somewhere nearby.

The masked man smiled.

"You've finally come home, Evelyn."

Emily clenched her fists.

"I don't know you."

"No."

"But I know you."

He slowly began walking.

The camera followed him through a dim corridor.

Steel walls.

Glass laboratories.

Storage vaults.

The architecture matched the underground complex perfectly.

He wasn't using prerecorded footage.

He was inside the same underground facility.

An FBI sniper whispered into his radio.

"Target located."

Harris shook his head.

"No."

"We don't know exactly where."

The sniper frowned.

"The signal keeps moving."

The masked man continued.

"When you were eleven months old..."

"...you smiled every time someone played piano."

Emily froze.

Only Daniel had mentioned that.

The man smiled.

"You hated peas."

"You refused to sleep unless someone sang."

"You reached for your mother's necklace every morning."

Emily felt tears filling her eyes.

Those details had never appeared in the recordings.

No one should know them.

Lawson looked horrified.

"Daniel never told anyone those things."

The masked man answered without looking at him.

"He didn't have to."

"I was there."

Emily's voice trembled.

"Who are you?"

The man slowly reached toward his mask.

"Someone you've known your entire life."

At that moment—

Gunfire echoed from the western corridor.

The tactical team reported over the radio.

"Contact!"

"Hostiles in Sector Four!"

The bunker shook violently.

The attackers had found another entrance.

Harris barked orders.

"Hold the line!"

"Protect Evelyn!"

More agents rushed into defensive positions.

Yet the masked man never seemed concerned.

Instead...

He quietly removed his gloves.

Across the back of his left hand was an old scar.

Emily stared.

Something about it felt familiar.

Without warning...

A forgotten memory flashed across her mind.

She was very young.

Perhaps three years old.

A man lifting her into the air.

Laughing.

She couldn't remember his face.

Only the scar on his hand.

The exact same scar.

Emily staggered backward.

"I've seen you before."

The masked man nodded.

"Yes."

Professor Caroline Hughes looked confused.

"Emily?"

Emily shook her head.

"I don't remember his face."

"But I remember..."

"The scar."

The masked man smiled sadly.

"I was the first person who carried you after your father."

Every FBI agent tightened their grip on their weapons.

Emily's voice broke.

"Were you the one who kidnapped me?"

The man didn't answer immediately.

Instead...

He slowly removed his mask.

The room gasped.

He wasn't elderly.

He looked to be around fifty.

Dark hair streaked with silver.

Kind blue eyes.

A weathered face marked by years of hardship.

Emily searched desperately through her memories.

Nothing.

She had never seen him.

Yet somehow...

He looked familiar.

Lawson suddenly whispered,

"I know him."

Everyone turned.

"You do?"

Lawson nodded slowly.

His face had become pale.

"Oh my God..."

Harris looked at him.

"Who is he?"

Lawson answered in disbelief.

"His name is Samuel Hayes."

Silence.

"The Carter family's chief of security."

Emily frowned.

"My father's bodyguard?"

Lawson nodded.

"For fifteen years."

Emily looked back at the screen.

"My father trusted you."

Samuel lowered his eyes.

"He trusted me with everything."

Emily's voice hardened.

"Then why wasn't I with my parents?"

Samuel closed his eyes.

"Because I failed."

Twenty-Two Years Earlier...

Rain poured across the Carter Estate.

Samuel Hayes stood outside the nursery holding baby Evelyn.

Daniel Carter hurried toward an armored SUV.

"They're closing in."

Rebecca kissed her daughter one last time.

"Take her."

Samuel nodded.

"I'll keep her safe."

Daniel gripped his shoulder.

"No matter what happens..."

"...protect Evelyn."

"I swear."

Samuel drove through the storm for nearly an hour.

The original plan had been simple.

Hide Evelyn with Richard Bennett for one night.

Return before dawn.

Instead...

Halfway to Richard's house...

Black SUVs appeared behind him.

Three.

Then five.

Then seven.

Someone had betrayed them.

Samuel looked into the rearview mirror.

"They found us."

He turned sharply onto a gravel road.

Bullets shattered the rear window.

The armored SUV swerved violently.

He knew he couldn't outrun them forever.

So he made the hardest decision of his life.

He stopped beside a small rural church.

An orphanage stood behind it.

Samuel wrapped baby Evelyn in a blanket.

Placed the Carter family bracelet inside.

And left her with the elderly caretaker.

"I'll come back."

He whispered.

"I promise."

Then he drove away.

Leading the attackers with him.

Back in the present...

Emily stared at the screen.

"I wasn't taken from Richard."

Samuel nodded.

"You never reached him."

Lawson whispered,

"The orphanage..."

Emily's heart raced.

"I grew up there."

Pieces of her childhood suddenly fit together.

She had always believed the Bennetts had adopted her from that orphanage.

Instead...

Samuel had hidden her there first.

Emily asked quietly,

"Then how did Richard become my guardian?"

Samuel's expression darkened.

"I came back two days later."

"You were gone."

Another memory.

A woman at the orphanage.

Smiling.

Holding little Emily's hand.

Telling her,

"Your new parents are here."

Emily had never questioned it.

Samuel continued.

"I searched for years."

"So did Daniel."

"So did Rebecca."

"But every official record had disappeared."

Harris frowned.

"Someone erased her identity."

Samuel nodded.

"The Thirteenth Circle."

"They created Emily Bennett."

"They destroyed Evelyn Carter."

Emily felt dizzy.

"So..."

"My entire childhood..."

"My school records..."

"My medical history..."

"My name..."

Samuel answered quietly.

"All fabricated."

One of the FBI analysts suddenly interrupted.

"Sir!"

Harris turned.

"What?"

"We've accessed archived adoption records."

The analyst projected an old document onto the main screen.

It showed Emily's adoption file.

Signed by a family court judge.

Approved by Child Services.

Completely legal.

Then...

The analyst enlarged one signature.

"There."

Lawson looked closer.

His face changed instantly.

"No..."

Emily frowned.

"What?"

Lawson pointed toward the signature.

"The adoption wasn't approved by a judge."

"Then who signed it?"

The analyst zoomed further.

The signature became perfectly clear.

Everyone in the room froze.

It read:

Victoria Ashcroft

Not as aunt.

Not as Consortium chairwoman.

But under the official title:

Director of Illinois Child Protection Services

Emily whispered,

"She controlled the system..."

Lawson slowly nodded.

"She didn't just know where you were."

"She legally placed you with Richard Bennett."

Emily looked back at Samuel.

"So my aunt..."

"...gave me away."

Samuel's eyes filled with regret.

"No."

He answered quietly.

"She sold you."

At that exact moment, every monitor in Room E-12 flashed red.

A computerized warning echoed through the bunker.

Emergency Lockdown Initiated.

All exits sealed.

Then another message appeared across every screen.

May you like

Only one heir may leave alive.
