Chapter 2 – Project Eve

Chapter 2 – Project Eve

Richard Bennett had never begged anyone in his life.

Not business partners.

Not judges.

Not politicians.

Not even the federal investigators who had once questioned him about missing corporate funds.

But now, standing in the middle of his daughter's graduation ceremony with hundreds of cameras pointed at him, he shouted with a desperation that shocked everyone.

"Emily... please."

His voice cracked.

"Don't open that folder."

The entire courtyard froze.

A billionaire businessman begging his own daughter?

That alone was enough to make every reporter lift their camera.

Emily stared at him.

For twenty-two years, she had imagined this moment.

She had imagined screaming.

Crying.

Demanding answers.

Instead...

She felt nothing.

No anger.

No hatred.

Only peace.

Because for the first time, Richard Bennett wasn't controlling the story.

She was.

She rested one finger on the computer mouse.

"I've waited my whole life to hear you say 'please,' Father."

Richard swallowed hard.

"I raised you."

Emily smiled faintly.

"No."

"You controlled me."

"Those aren't the same thing."

A murmur swept through the audience.

Professor Caroline Hughes quietly stepped closer.

"Emily..."

"You don't have to do this if you're overwhelmed."

Emily looked at the dean.

"For years, I wished just one adult would ask whether I was telling the truth."

"You were the first."

"So thank you."

Professor Hughes squeezed Emily's shoulder and stepped back.

"Then tell your story."

Emily clicked the folder.

The projector flickered.

A single document appeared.

PROJECT EVE

CONFIDENTIAL ADOPTION AGREEMENT

SEALED BY ORDER OF THE ILLINOIS FAMILY COURT

Below it was a date.

Twenty-Two Years Earlier

Gasps spread through the crowd.

Adoption?

Emily watched her parents carefully.

Margaret had stopped crying.

Richard had stopped breathing.

Ethan looked as though he wanted to run.

Emily opened the first page.

The courtroom seal filled the screen.

Then several names appeared.

Minor Child: Baby Girl Jane Doe

Temporary Guardian: Richard Bennett

Temporary Guardian: Margaret Bennett

Emily read the next sentence aloud.

"The guardians acknowledge that custody is temporary until the child reaches legal adulthood or until the biological family's legal claim is restored."

The audience erupted.

Temporary?

Not permanent?

Richard shouted,

"That's confidential!"

Emily answered calmly.

"So was everything else you lied about."

A reporter near the front row raised his phone.

"This is live."

Another reporter whispered,

"National news just picked it up."

Within minutes, millions of viewers were watching.

Emily scrolled farther.

Most of the legal text was difficult to understand.

Then she stopped.

Highlighted in yellow.

One paragraph.

She read it slowly.

"If evidence concerning the disappearance of biological parents is ever recovered, this agreement shall immediately become subject to judicial review."

Silence.

Someone whispered,

"Disappearance?"

Not death.

Disappearance.

Professor Hughes frowned.

"Emily..."

"Are you saying your parents..."

Emily shook her head.

"They aren't dead."

The entire courtyard gasped.

"They disappeared."

"And someone made sure no one ever found them."

Richard lunged forward again.

Security held him back.

"You don't know what you're talking about!"

Emily met his eyes.

"I didn't."

"Until four years ago."

Four Years Earlier

Rain hammered against the windows of the Bennett mansion.

Emily had come home unexpectedly after her evening shift at the campus library.

The house was dark.

She walked toward Richard's office.

The door was slightly open.

Voices drifted into the hallway.

Richard.

Margaret.

And a man Emily had never seen before.

She stopped walking.

"...the girl can't ever know."

"What if she finds the adoption records?"

Richard laughed.

"She won't."

"They're sealed."

The stranger replied quietly.

"I'm not talking about the adoption."

"I'm talking about Project Eve."

Emily had never heard those words before.

Project Eve.

Something about the name made her stomach tighten.

She pulled out her phone.

Pressed record.

Back in the present...

Emily played the audio.

The courtyard speakers echoed with Richard's younger voice.

"...if she learns who her real father is, everything we've built disappears."

Another voice answered,

"Then make sure she never graduates."

"Keep her dependent."

"Break her confidence."

"Eventually she'll leave."

Richard laughed.

"She already believes she's worthless."

Margaret added,

"Good."

"That makes controlling her easier."

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Even the wind seemed to disappear.

Professor Hughes slowly turned toward Richard.

"You destroyed your own daughter's future..."

"...on purpose?"

Richard couldn't answer.

Emily closed the audio.

"I listened to this recording hundreds of times."

"At first..."

"I thought I had misunderstood."

"So I started looking."

She opened another folder.

Thousands of scanned documents appeared.

Bank statements.

Court filings.

Private investigator reports.

Corporate emails.

Medical records.

Insurance claims.

Photos.

So many photos.

Years of evidence.

"I searched every night."

"While working."

"While studying."

"While pretending everything was normal."

She smiled sadly.

"Turns out..."

"My parents weren't very good at deleting evidence."

Ethan suddenly shouted,

"She's twisting everything!"

Emily looked at him.

"You really want to speak?"

He hesitated.

She clicked another file.

A security video appeared.

Date:

Three Years Earlier

Inside the Bennett home.

Emily watched herself carrying groceries.

Ethan quietly entered her bedroom.

Opened her backpack.

Removed an exam envelope.

Slipped handwritten notes inside.

Then left.

The next scene.

A professor discovering the notes.

Emily being accused of cheating.

The disciplinary hearing.

Her scholarship suspended.

Emily looked at her brother.

"You framed me."

Ethan's face turned white.

"I..."

"I was sixteen..."

Richard interrupted.

"I told him to."

Everyone turned toward Richard.

He hadn't meant to say it aloud.

But it was too late.

The microphones had captured every word.

The reporters exploded.

"You instructed your son?"

"You framed your daughter?"

"Mr. Bennett!"

"Mr. Bennett!"

Flash after flash lit the courtyard.

Margaret grabbed Richard's arm.

"What have you done?"

Richard stared blankly ahead.

"I..."

He had spent decades controlling every conversation.

Now every sentence was destroying him.

Emily took a deep breath.

"This is why I stopped defending myself."

"Because every time I proved one lie wrong..."

"They created another."

She looked toward the graduates.

"If you've ever wondered why someone suddenly disappears from friendships..."

"Why good students suddenly become outcasts..."

"Sometimes..."

"It's because lies spread faster than truth."

Several students quietly lowered their heads.

They remembered.

They remembered avoiding Emily.

Ignoring her.

Believing rumors.

Without ever asking.

Professor Hughes stepped toward the microphone.

"I owe you an apology."

Emily looked surprised.

The dean continued,

"When those accusations happened..."

"I believed the investigation."

"I should have asked more questions."

Emily smiled gently.

"You were given fake evidence."

"That's what manipulators do."

Professor Hughes nodded.

"But I still failed you."

The audience applauded.

Not loudly.

Softly.

Respectfully.

For the first time that afternoon...

Emily wasn't standing alone.

Then an older man wearing a navy suit hurried through the crowd.

He carried a leather briefcase.

His silver hair was damp with sweat.

"Emily!"

She recognized him immediately.

"Mr. Lawson?"

Richard's face lost all color.

"No..."

"Not him."

Benjamin Lawson had been Richard Bennett's corporate attorney for almost twenty-five years.

Until six months ago.

When he suddenly resigned without explanation.

Lawson walked directly onto the stage.

Ignoring Richard completely.

He stopped beside Emily.

Then, in front of every camera...

He bowed his head.

"I'm sorry."

Emily blinked.

"For what?"

Lawson's voice trembled.

"I helped hide the truth."

The courtyard erupted again.

"I believed I was protecting a child."

"I didn't realize..."

"...I was helping imprison one."

Richard screamed,

"Benjamin!"

"You signed a confidentiality agreement!"

Lawson looked back calmly.

"I also signed something else."

He opened his briefcase.

Removed a thick sealed envelope.

Across the front, written in blue ink:

TO BE OPENED ONLY IF EMILY BENNETT GRADUATES FROM UNIVERSITY.

Every eye fixed on the envelope.

Emily stared in disbelief.

"What is it?"

Lawson smiled sadly.

"I promised a man twenty-two years ago..."

"...that if you ever became strong enough to stand on your own..."

"...I would finally tell you the truth."

Emily's heartbeat echoed in her ears.

"The truth about what?"

Lawson looked directly at her.

"The night you disappeared."

Emily frowned.

"Disappeared?"

"I thought I was adopted."

Lawson slowly shook his head.

"No."

"You weren't abandoned."

"You were kidnapped."

The entire courtyard fell into absolute silence.

Richard closed his eyes.

Because the secret he had buried for twenty-two years...

May you like

Had finally surfaced.
