Chapter 17 – The Brother Who Never Existed

Chapter 17 – The Brother Who Never Existed
The laughter echoed again.
Soft.
Innocent.
Impossible.
It drifted upward from the hidden stone staircase beneath Room E-12.
Every person in the bunker turned toward the darkness.
Samuel Hayes had gone completely pale.
Agent Harris noticed immediately.
"You know that voice."
Samuel swallowed.
"I prayed I'd never hear it again."
Emily stared at him.
"You said..."
"...it belongs to my younger brother."
Samuel nodded slowly.
"Yes."
Emily shook her head.
"I don't have a brother."
Samuel looked at her with quiet sadness.
"You were never supposed to know."
Silence settled over the room.
Even the gunfire outside seemed distant.
Emily felt her heartbeat quicken.
"My parents never mentioned another child."
Arthur Ashcroft lowered his eyes.
"Because they believed he was dead."
Emily's voice cracked.
"What?"
Arthur walked toward the ancient staircase.
His hand rested on the stone railing.
"Rebecca became pregnant again two years after you disappeared."
Emily froze.
Samuel continued softly,
"They never stopped looking for you."
"But life..."
"...kept moving."
"They had another baby."
"A little boy."
Emily tried to process the words.
"I had a brother."
Arthur corrected her gently.
"You still do."
Before anyone could speak again...
A child's voice floated up from below.
Clear this time.
Almost playful.
"Emily..."
The sound of her name froze everyone in place.
Emily had never heard the voice before.
Yet something about it felt strangely familiar.
Like a forgotten memory.
Agent Harris immediately signaled the tactical team.
"Two agents with me."
"We're going down."
Arthur raised a hand.
"No."
Harris frowned.
"What?"
"The staircase wasn't built for soldiers."
"It was built for family."
Emily looked at Arthur.
"You mean..."
"Only I should go."
Arthur nodded.
"The Archive chooses blood."
Samuel disagreed immediately.
"She's not going alone."
Emily looked at him.
"Neither are you."
She turned to Harris.
"If dozens of armed agents follow me..."
"...whoever's down there will disappear."
Harris knew she was right.
After a long pause, he nodded.
"You have ten minutes."
"If we don't hear from you..."
"...we're coming."
Emily took a flashlight.
The beam disappeared into the darkness below.
She stepped onto the ancient staircase.
Samuel walked beside her.
Arthur followed quietly behind.
The stone steps spiraled downward.
Far below the modern bunker.
Far below the laboratories.
Far below the hidden elevators.
This place had existed centuries before the Carter complex.
The air became colder.
The walls changed from polished concrete to rough stone.
Ancient symbols had been carved into the rock.
Phoenixes.
Stars.
Family crests.
Names.
Hundreds of names.
Arthur whispered,
"Every heir added one."
Emily brushed her fingers across the wall.
Near the bottom...
She found two familiar names.
Daniel Carter
Rebecca Ashcroft Carter
Carved side by side.
Below them...
One smaller inscription.
Written in fresh stone.
Evelyn Carter
Emily frowned.
"I never carved this."
Arthur's expression darkened.
"No."
"You didn't."
The laughter echoed again.
Closer now.
Emily followed the sound until the staircase opened into a vast underground hall.
She stopped.
Her breath caught.
The chamber looked nothing like the bunker above.
There were no computers.
No steel walls.
Only towering stone pillars.
Bookshelves stretching toward the ceiling.
Thousands upon thousands of handwritten journals.
Candles still burned.
Someone had been here recently.
At the center of the room stood a young man.
Perhaps twenty years old.
Dark hair.
Blue eyes.
He wore simple black clothing.
In his hands...
He held an old leather journal.
He looked directly at Emily.
And smiled.
"I've been waiting for you."
Emily stared.
"Who are you?"
The young man tilted his head.
"You really don't recognize me?"
Emily shook her head.
"No."
He laughed quietly.
"I suppose that makes sense."
"You disappeared before I was born."
Samuel stepped in front of Emily.
"Stay back."
The young man smiled politely.
"You still protect her."
"Just like Father asked."
Samuel's eyes widened.
"Father?"
The young man looked at Emily again.
"My name is..."
He hesitated.
Then answered.
"Lucas Carter."
Emily's knees nearly gave way.
"My brother..."
Lucas nodded.
"Yes."
Emily slowly walked toward him.
She searched his face.
The resemblance was undeniable.
Her father's eyes.
Her mother's smile.
He looked exactly like the child Daniel and Rebecca might have raised.
Tears filled Emily's eyes.
"They told me you were dead."
Lucas smiled sadly.
"They told me the same thing about you."
For a long moment...
Neither sibling spoke.
Then Emily embraced him.
Lucas hugged her tightly.
After twenty-two years...
The Carter family had finally been reunited.
Or so it seemed.
Arthur quietly wiped away a tear.
Samuel smiled for the first time in years.
Even the tension of the battle above seemed to disappear.
Until...
Lucas whispered into Emily's ear.
"I'm sorry."
Emily frowned.
"For what?"
Lucas stepped back.
His expression changed completely.
The warmth disappeared from his eyes.
He looked... conflicted.
"I lied."
Emily felt a chill run through her body.
"What do you mean?"
Lucas slowly held up the leather journal.
"This isn't the Archive."
"It's bait."
The candles around the chamber suddenly extinguished.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Heavy stone doors slammed shut behind them.
Arthur spun around.
"No..."
Lucas looked at Emily with visible regret.
"I didn't have a choice."
Emily whispered,
"Lucas..."
The young man's eyes filled with tears.
"They still have Mom and Dad."
"If I didn't bring you here..."
"...they were going to kill them."
Samuel reached for his weapon.
But dozens of red laser sights suddenly appeared across the chamber.
Every wall slid open.
Black-clad soldiers stepped into the light.
More than a hundred.
At their center...
A tall figure emerged wearing a black suit and silver gloves.
He removed his hood.
Emily recognized him instantly.
The masked man from the Thirteenth Circle.
This time, his face was uncovered.
He smiled calmly.
Then looked directly at Emily.
"Welcome, Evelyn."
He turned toward Lucas.
"You did well... my son."
The chamber fell silent.
Emily slowly turned to Lucas.
Her voice barely rose above a whisper.
"...Your son?"
Lucas lowered his head.
One tear rolled down his cheek.
He whispered the words that shattered Emily's heart.
"I'm sorry... Sister."
May you like
"He raised me."
