Chapter 13 – The Price of a Child

Chapter 13 – The Price of a Child
The warning echoed through every corridor of the underground complex.
Emergency Lockdown Initiated.
All exits sealed.
Only one heir may leave alive.
Steel blast doors crashed into place throughout the bunker.
The vibration shook the floor beneath Emily's feet.
Red emergency lights bathed Room E-12 in an eerie glow.
For a brief moment...
No one moved.
Then Agent Michael Harris shouted,
"Everyone into defensive positions!"
The FBI tactical team immediately spread through the operations center.
Rifles were raised.
Doors were covered.
The underground command room had become a fortress.
Emily couldn't take her eyes off Samuel Hayes.
"You said..."
"...my aunt sold me."
Samuel slowly lowered his head.
"Yes."
Emily felt her voice break.
"To whom?"
Samuel closed his eyes for a long moment before answering.
"To the Thirteenth Circle."
The words hit harder than any slap Richard Bennett had ever given her.
"I wasn't kidnapped..."
"I was traded."
Samuel nodded.
"I'm afraid that's exactly what happened."
Benjamin Lawson slammed both hands against the operations table.
"Why?"
"Why would Victoria do that?"
Samuel answered quietly.
"Power."
He walked toward one of the old computer terminals.
With a few keystrokes, an encrypted file opened.
Across the top of the screen appeared:
OPERATION SUCCESSION
Date:
Twenty-Two Years Earlier
Status:
Completed
Emily felt sick.
Samuel clicked the first page.
A financial ledger appeared.
Several names had been blacked out.
Only one line remained visible.
Transfer Approved
Recipient: Victoria Ashcroft
Amount Received: $500,000,000
Professor Hughes whispered,
"Five hundred million dollars..."
Samuel nodded.
"That was the price."
Emily stared at the screen.
"My life..."
"...was worth five hundred million?"
Samuel slowly shook his head.
"No."
"You were worth much more."
Another page opened.
A handwritten note appeared beneath the transaction.
Emily immediately recognized the elegant handwriting.
Victoria's.
It read:
Payment received.
The child has been transferred successfully.
The Twelfth Seat will never awaken.
Emily felt her knees weaken.
She had never been abandoned.
She had been sold.
By her own aunt.
Professor Hughes quietly wrapped an arm around Emily's shoulders.
"You don't have to keep reading."
Emily wiped away a tear.
"Yes."
"I do."
"For twenty-two years everyone decided my life without asking me."
"I'm done looking away."
Samuel opened another document.
This one contained surveillance photographs.
The first image showed Victoria Ashcroft stepping out of a limousine.
She handed a baby wrapped in a pink blanket to a man wearing a long black coat.
His face couldn't be seen.
Only one detail stood out.
A silver ring engraved with the Roman numeral:
XIII
Emily whispered,
"The Thirteenth Circle."
Samuel nodded.
"That was the first confirmed photograph anyone ever captured."
Agent Harris stepped forward.
"Can we identify him?"
The FBI facial recognition specialist shook his head.
"No face."
"No fingerprints."
"No DNA."
"He planned everything."
Emily looked at Samuel.
"How did you get these pictures?"
Samuel smiled sadly.
"Your father."
"He trusted nobody..."
"...except cameras."
Samuel walked to another wall.
Hidden behind one of the monitors was a small safe.
He entered a twelve-digit code.
The safe opened.
Inside lay dozens of old film negatives.
Emily frowned.
"Photographs?"
Samuel nodded.
"Daniel didn't trust digital evidence."
"He believed paper survived longer than hard drives."
One by one...
The negatives were scanned.
Every image revealed another piece of history.
Victoria meeting politicians.
Richard Bennett shaking hands with unknown businessmen.
Judges entering secret meetings.
Police commissioners accepting envelopes.
Corporate executives boarding private jets.
Every photograph connected another powerful person.
Benjamin Lawson whispered,
"It's not just corruption."
"It's an empire."
Suddenly...
One image appeared that froze everyone.
A graduation photograph.
Emily blinked.
It was her.
Eight years old.
Elementary school.
Standing proudly with a small reading award.
She remembered that day.
No one from the Bennett family had attended.
She had stood alone.
Yet...
In the background...
A man wearing sunglasses watched from across the street.
Samuel quietly smiled.
"You weren't alone."
Emily stared.
"Who is he?"
Samuel removed his glasses.
"It was me."
Emily looked closer.
The scar.
The same posture.
The same man.
"You followed me?"
Samuel nodded.
"Every birthday."
"Every school play."
"Every graduation."
"I made sure nobody hurt you."
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
"You watched me..."
"...all those years?"
Samuel smiled sadly.
"I promised your father."
"I couldn't raise you."
"But I could protect you."
Emily remembered something.
"When I was twelve..."
"I almost got hit by a truck."
Samuel nodded.
"I pushed you out of the way."
Her eyes widened.
"It was you?"
"You never saw my face."
"But yes."
Another memory surfaced.
At sixteen...
Someone had anonymously paid her hospital bill after she'd broken her wrist.
She had never known who.
Samuel quietly answered before she even asked.
"That was me too."
Emily broke down crying.
Her whole life...
She had believed nobody cared.
Yet someone had silently protected her for twenty-two years.
The emotional moment was interrupted by another alarm.
A technician shouted,
"Movement!"
Everyone turned toward the security monitors.
Dozens of red dots advanced through the underground tunnels.
Not thirty-seven anymore.
More than one hundred.
The Thirteenth Circle had brought reinforcements.
Agent Harris frowned.
"That's impossible."
"Where are they coming from?"
The technician zoomed out.
Hidden passages.
Dozens of them.
The underground network extended far beyond the Carter Estate.
The attackers were flooding in from every direction.
Samuel looked toward Emily.
"They've changed the plan."
"What plan?"
"They weren't supposed to attack until tomorrow."
Emily frowned.
"Why now?"
Samuel answered quietly.
"They know Daniel contacted you."
Just then...
The satellite phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time it contained only a photograph.
Emily picked it up.
Her heart stopped.
The picture showed a woman.
Older now.
Her hair streaked with gray.
Thin.
Tired.
But unmistakably...
Rebecca Carter.
Emily's mother.
The timestamp in the corner read:
TEN MINUTES AGO
Across the bottom of the image, someone had typed:
She has forty-eight hours left.
No explanation.
No signature.
Only the silver XIII symbol.
Emily whispered,
"Mom..."
Before anyone could react—
The lights suddenly went out.
Complete darkness swallowed Room E-12.
Then...
A single emergency spotlight flickered on.
It illuminated the far end of the room.
Someone was standing there.
Perfectly still.
No one had seen them enter.
The figure slowly stepped into the light.
An elderly man.
White hair.
Black tailored suit.
Elegant cane.
He smiled warmly at Emily.
Then spoke the one sentence that left every person in the room speechless.
May you like
"Hello, granddaughter."
