Chapter 3 – The Kidnapped Child

Chapter 3 – The Kidnapped Child
The word echoed through the silent courtyard.
Kidnapped.
For several seconds, no one breathed.
Emily stared at Benjamin Lawson, convinced she had misheard him.
"My... what?"
Lawson's expression was filled with regret.
"You weren't abandoned, Emily."
"You weren't an orphan."
"And Richard Bennett was never supposed to become your father."
A wave of whispers swept across the audience.
Richard Bennett suddenly broke free from one of the security officers.
"That's enough!"
His voice thundered across the courtyard.
"Benjamin, don't say another word!"
Before he could reach the stage, three campus officers tackled him to the ground.
"Mr. Bennett!"
"You need to calm down!"
"I said LET ME GO!"
His furious screams echoed through the campus.
The cameras never stopped recording.
Emily looked down at the sealed envelope in Lawson's hands.
Her fingers trembled.
"Who... am I?"
Lawson didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he gently placed the envelope on the podium.
"I promised your biological father I would never open this unless one condition was met."
He looked at Emily with tired eyes.
"You had to graduate from college."
Emily frowned.
"Why?"
"Because he believed only an independent woman could survive knowing the truth."
Professor Caroline Hughes stepped closer.
"Mr. Lawson... are you certain this is the appropriate place?"
Lawson glanced around.
Hundreds of witnesses.
Dozens of reporters.
Live broadcasts.
Then he looked at Richard, still struggling against security.
"Actually..."
"There will never be a safer place."
Emily slowly broke the seal.
Inside were several documents.
Old photographs.
A handwritten letter.
And a newspaper clipping dated twenty-two years earlier.
The headline filled the projector screen.
INFANT DAUGHTER OF TECHNOLOGY EXECUTIVE MISSING AFTER CHARITY GALA
Emily's heart skipped.
Below the headline was a photograph.
A young couple stood smiling while holding a newborn wrapped in a white blanket.
The man looked to be in his early thirties.
Tall.
Dark-haired.
Confident.
The woman had kind eyes and a gentle smile.
They looked... familiar.
Emily stared at the baby.
Around the infant's tiny wrist was a silver bracelet engraved with one word.
Evelyn.
Emily frowned.
"My name isn't Evelyn."
Lawson nodded.
"It was."
The audience gasped.
Emily whispered,
"My name..."
"...isn't Emily?"
Lawson shook his head.
"Emily Bennett is the name Richard gave you."
"Your birth name..."
"...was Evelyn Carter."
The courtyard erupted into stunned whispers.
Richard screamed from across the lawn.
"She's lying!"
Lawson calmly looked toward him.
"No."
"You've been lying for twenty-two years."
Emily turned another page.
It was a police report.
Across the top, stamped in bold red letters:
UNSOLVED
Victim:
Evelyn Grace Carter
Age:
11 Months
Status:
Missing
Emily felt dizzy.
For twenty-two years...
People had been searching for her.
She looked toward Lawson.
"My parents..."
"They're dead, aren't they?"
Lawson hesitated.
"I don't know."
That answer hurt even more.
He continued quietly.
"The official investigation concluded your parents died in a boating accident six months after your disappearance."
Emily lowered her eyes.
"But you don't believe that."
"No."
"Neither did the detectives."
He removed another document.
"This case was closed politically."
Professor Hughes frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Lawson answered carefully.
"It means powerful people wanted it forgotten."
Emily's thoughts raced.
"So Richard..."
"...knew them?"
Lawson nodded.
"They weren't strangers."
"They were business partners."
Another photograph appeared on the projector.
Richard Bennett.
Twenty-three years younger.
Standing beside the same man from the newspaper.
Both smiling during a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Emily stared at the image.
"My father..."
Lawson corrected gently.
"Richard."
"...and your biological father, Daniel Carter, founded Carter Technologies together."
The audience gasped again.
Lawson continued.
"Officially, Richard owned thirty percent of the company."
"In reality..."
"...Daniel trusted him completely."
Emily slowly understood.
"If Daniel disappeared..."
Lawson nodded.
"Richard inherited everything."
Professor Hughes whispered,
"My God..."
Emily turned another page.
It contained handwritten notes.
Names.
Bank transfers.
Dates.
One line had been circled repeatedly.
Transfer of Guardianship – Approved Within 48 Hours
Emily frowned.
"Isn't that unusually fast?"
Lawson gave a bitter smile.
"It should have taken months."
"It took two days."
Someone in the audience shouted,
"How is that possible?"
Lawson answered without hesitation.
"Money."
Richard stopped struggling.
Instead...
He became strangely quiet.
His silence frightened Emily more than his shouting ever had.
Lawson noticed.
"He's thinking."
Emily looked confused.
"Thinking about what?"
"How to escape."
At that exact moment, Richard slowly reached inside his jacket.
One officer noticed.
"Sir!"
Richard pulled out his phone.
Not to call anyone.
He pressed one button.
Then threw the phone onto the grass.
A second later...
The screen went black.
Lawson's face changed instantly.
"No..."
Emily looked at him.
"What?"
Lawson spoke in a whisper.
"He activated it."
"What?"
"A dead-man switch."
The audience looked confused.
Lawson quickly opened his own laptop.
His fingers flew across the keyboard.
Then his face turned pale.
"Oh no..."
Emily leaned closer.
"What happened?"
Lawson turned the screen toward her.
A secure cloud storage account had just begun deleting files.
One after another.
Thousands of them.
Emily's eyes widened.
"The evidence!"
Lawson nodded.
"He built an emergency system years ago."
"If he was ever publicly exposed..."
"...every remaining piece of evidence would erase itself."
Emily's heart pounded.
"No..."
Lawson was already making phone calls.
"Connect me to the FBI Cyber Division."
"Now!"
Richard laughed.
Even while handcuffed.
"You were too late."
"Everything is disappearing."
Emily clenched her fists.
"Not everything."
Richard looked at her confidently.
"You only copied a fraction."
Emily smiled.
"You still underestimate me."
She reached into another pocket inside her graduation gown.
Then placed three more identical black flash drives on the podium.
The crowd gasped.
Richard's smile vanished.
"No..."
Emily nodded.
"I made four encrypted copies."
"One stayed with me."
"One went to my attorney."
"One went into a bank safety deposit box."
"And one..."
She looked directly into Richard's terrified eyes.
"...was mailed to someone you never expected."
Richard's confidence shattered.
"Who?"
Emily smiled.
"You'll find out soon enough."
Before Richard could answer—
Every phone in the courtyard buzzed at the same time.
Students.
Parents.
Faculty.
Reporters.
Everyone looked down.
Breaking News alerts flooded every screen.
FBI ANNOUNCES REOPENING OF 22-YEAR-OLD EVELYN CARTER DISAPPEARANCE CASE
Another alert appeared immediately beneath it.
MULTIPLE FEDERAL SEARCH WARRANTS EXECUTED ACROSS THREE STATES
Then another.
BENNETT GLOBAL HOLDINGS UNDER CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION
Richard's face turned white.
He whispered only two words.
"They moved..."
Lawson looked at him calmly.
"No."
"They've been waiting."
Suddenly, the distant sound of helicopter blades echoed across the campus.
Everyone looked toward the sky.
Three black helicopters approached in formation.
Their doors slid open before they had fully landed.
Agents in dark jackets stepped out.
The yellow letters across their backs were unmistakable.
FBI
One senior agent walked straight toward the stage.
He stopped in front of Emily.
Then held up a photograph.
"Miss Bennett..."
"We've been looking for you..."
May you like
"...for twenty-two years."
