Chapter 16 – The Archive Opens

Chapter 16 – The Archive Opens
The countdown echoed through the bunker.
00:10
00:09
00:08
Every second sounded louder than the gunfire outside.
Emily looked from Arthur...
...to Samuel.
Her father's final sentence repeated endlessly in her mind.
"Trust the person everyone else fears."
Who had Daniel meant?
The founder of the Consortium?
Or the silent bodyguard who had watched over her for twenty-two years?
The tactical team fell back into Room E-12.
One FBI agent slammed the reinforced door shut.
"They're through the outer defense!"
"How many?"
"At least sixty."
Another explosion rocked the bunker.
The titanium walls groaned under the force.
Arthur looked directly at Emily.
"You don't have time to decide."
Samuel disagreed.
"No."
"She has to choose for herself."
Emily closed her eyes.
Every lie...
Every betrayal...
Every secret...
Had been someone else making decisions for her.
Not anymore.
She looked at both men.
"I'm trusting neither of you."
The room fell silent.
"I'm trusting my father."
She unfolded Daniel's letter one more time.
This time...
She held it beneath one of the emergency lights.
Faint ink slowly appeared between the handwritten lines.
Invisible writing.
Benjamin Lawson gasped.
"Lemon ink..."
Daniel had hidden another message.
Emily read it aloud.
When the Archive opens, never enter through the front door.
Arthur's eyes widened.
"Impossible..."
Emily kept reading.
The first chamber is a trap.
Samuel immediately understood.
"He knew someone would eventually force the Archive open."
The countdown reached:
00:03
00:02
00:01
Somewhere deep beneath the bunker...
Massive steel locks disengaged.
The sound echoed like distant thunder.
The Twelfth Archive had opened.
Every monitor switched to the live security feed.
The giant vault door slowly rolled aside.
Victoria Ashcroft smiled.
Finally.
Twenty-two years of searching...
And the Archive belonged to her.
She stepped confidently inside.
Behind her walked dozens of heavily armed mercenaries.
The chamber was magnificent.
Ancient stone walls.
Marble columns.
The leather-bound Archive rested on a pedestal beneath a glass dome.
Victoria approached it.
Reached out.
Placed her hand on the cover.
Nothing happened.
She smiled.
"I win."
Back inside Room E-12...
Emily kept reading Daniel's invisible message.
The next sentence chilled everyone.
The book is fake.
Arthur looked stunned.
"No..."
"It can't be."
Emily continued.
The real Archive is beneath the pedestal.
Samuel laughed softly.
"Classic Daniel."
Victoria lifted the leather book.
She opened the first page.
Blank.
Second page.
Blank.
Every page...
Completely empty.
Her confident smile vanished.
Then...
A mechanical click echoed through the chamber.
Arthur whispered,
"He activated it."
Emily looked up.
"What?"
Arthur's face had turned pale.
"The decoy."
Without warning...
Steel shutters crashed down over every entrance to the Archive chamber.
Victoria spun around.
"What is this?"
Her mercenaries rushed toward the exits.
Too late.
The chamber sealed itself completely.
A calm computerized voice echoed through the vault.
Unauthorized access detected.
Decoy Archive activated.
Victoria screamed,
"No!"
The floor beneath the pedestal slowly opened.
The fake book disappeared into darkness.
At the same time...
Hundreds of hidden cameras emerged from the walls.
One by one.
Their red recording lights blinked on.
Professor Hughes suddenly understood.
"It isn't a bomb."
Lawson finished the thought.
"It's a confession room."
The computer continued.
All occupants are now being recorded.
Transmission has begun.
Across the world...
Televisions flickered.
News stations interrupted programming.
Government buildings.
Airports.
Financial exchanges.
Millions of screens displayed the same live feed.
Victoria Ashcroft stood trapped inside the sealed chamber.
Every word she spoke...
Was now being broadcast worldwide.
She slammed her fist against the steel door.
"You idiots!"
"Get me out!"
One mercenary shouted,
"We can't!"
Then Victoria made the mistake Daniel had predicted.
She looked directly at one of her men.
"Destroy the evidence!"
The mercenary hesitated.
"What evidence?"
Victoria shouted,
"The real Archive beneath the pedestal!"
Silence.
The entire world had just heard her admit...
The Archive was real.
News anchors stared in disbelief.
Government officials watched from secure offices.
Federal prosecutors immediately began recording the broadcast.
The truth was no longer hidden.
Inside Room E-12...
Agent Harris smiled for the first time.
"Daniel..."
"You planned this twenty-two years ago."
Arthur slowly nodded.
"He knew Victoria couldn't resist taking credit."
Emily returned to the invisible message.
One final line remained.
She read it aloud.
While everyone watches the decoy... find the real door.
Samuel immediately searched the floor.
Arthur tapped his cane twice against the marble.
A hollow sound echoed.
"There."
The marble tiles slowly shifted.
A narrow staircase appeared beneath them.
Unlike the rest of the bunker...
This staircase looked centuries old.
Stone.
Hand-carved.
Primitive.
It had existed long before the underground complex.
Emily looked down into the darkness.
"What is this place?"
Arthur answered quietly.
"The original Archive."
"The one no one else knows about."
Before they could descend—
The satellite phone rang again.
Emily answered immediately.
"Dad?"
Instead...
A weak female voice whispered through the static.
"Evelyn..."
Emily froze.
Tears instantly filled her eyes.
"Mom?"
Rebecca Carter's voice was barely audible.
"If you can hear me..."
"...don't save us."
Emily's heart broke.
"What?"
Rebecca struggled to speak.
"Finish what your father started."
"Promise me."
Emily shook her head desperately.
"No."
"I'm coming for both of you."
Rebecca began crying softly.
"My brave little Peanut..."
The line suddenly filled with shouting.
A door slammed.
Someone grabbed the phone.
Rebecca screamed.
Then—
The call disconnected.
Emily stood motionless.
The bunker fell silent around her.
Far below...
From the darkness beneath the hidden staircase...
A child's laughter echoed upward.
Everyone looked toward the opening.
Samuel slowly whispered,
"That's impossible."
Emily frowned.
"What?"
Samuel stared into the darkness.
"I've heard that laugh before."
He looked at Emily with visible fear.
May you like
"It belongs to your younger brother."
