Chapter 8 – The Man They Tried to Silence

Chapter 8 – The Man They Tried to Silence

The FBI command center erupted into motion.

Phones rang.

Computer monitors lit up with live security feeds.

Agents sprinted through the halls, shouting orders.

On one of the largest screens, the federal detention center appeared under complete lockdown.

Red emergency lights flashed across every corridor.

The timestamp in the corner read:

5:42 P.M.

Agent Michael Harris grabbed his jacket.

"Get the tactical team moving."

"Seal every entrance."

"No one leaves that facility."

Within seconds, heavily armed agents were racing toward waiting armored vehicles.

Emily stood frozen.

"They're going to kill him."

Harris looked at her.

"Yes."

Benjamin Lawson frowned.

"But Richard deserves prison."

Emily slowly shook her head.

"Maybe."

"But if he dies now..."

"...I'll never know the whole truth."

Harris nodded.

"And that's exactly why they're trying to silence him."

Fifteen minutes later...

An FBI helicopter landed on the roof of the detention center.

The tactical team rushed inside.

Gunfire had already stopped.

Smoke filled several hallways.

Emergency sprinklers soaked the concrete floors.

Broken lights flickered overhead.

The prison looked like a battlefield.

Harris led the first team toward the underground interrogation level.

Three correctional officers were already dead.

Two FBI guards had been wounded.

Every surveillance camera on the floor had gone black exactly seven minutes earlier.

Professional.

Precise.

Planned.

Outside the interrogation room...

Four masked attackers lay on the floor.

Two had been shot.

One was unconscious.

The fourth...

Had bitten into a cyanide capsule before anyone could question him.

Harris cursed under his breath.

"They trained for this."

He slowly pushed open the interrogation room door.

Richard Bennett was still alive.

Barely.

His hands were cuffed behind the chair.

Blood soaked his left shoulder.

A bullet had passed straight through.

Across the table lay the envelope marked:

TRAITORS ARE NEVER RETIRED

Richard stared blankly ahead.

He looked ten years older than he had that morning.

The prison doctor quickly examined him.

"He's lucky."

"The bullet missed his heart by less than an inch."

Harris leaned down.

"Richard."

Richard looked at him.

"You came."

"I told you."

"They wanted you dead."

Richard laughed weakly.

"I know."

Harris placed the envelope on the table.

"Who sent them?"

Richard closed his eyes.

"I can't tell you."

"Why?"

"They'll kill everyone."

Harris leaned closer.

"They already tried."

Richard whispered,

"You don't understand."

"No."

"You don't."

Meanwhile...

Back at FBI headquarters...

Emily sat alone inside a secure conference room.

The music box rested on the table.

She slowly turned the tiny brass key over in her fingers.

Safety Deposit 1207.

Somewhere...

Another secret waited.

Professor Hughes quietly entered carrying two cups of coffee.

"I thought you might need this."

Emily smiled faintly.

"Thank you."

They sat in silence.

Finally, Professor Hughes asked,

"How are you holding up?"

Emily looked down.

"I don't know who I am anymore."

Professor Hughes reached into her handbag.

"I've been thinking about something."

She placed Emily's graduation program on the table.

"You know what stood out to me today?"

Emily looked confused.

"What?"

"When your father slapped you..."

"...you never stepped backward."

Emily hadn't realized it.

"I didn't?"

Professor Hughes smiled.

"No."

"You stood your ground."

She looked at Emily with quiet pride.

"That's not something people learn overnight."

"That's something they've carried inside them all along."

Emily felt tears forming again.

For the first time in years...

Someone saw strength instead of weakness.

At that moment—

The conference room door burst open.

Agent Harris hurried inside.

"We found something."

Emily stood immediately.

"What?"

Harris handed her a transparent evidence bag.

Inside was a gold pocket watch.

It had been recovered from Richard's interrogation room floor.

Emily frowned.

"What is it?"

"It wasn't Richard's."

She looked closer.

The initials engraved on the back read:

D.C.

Emily's heartbeat quickened.

"Daniel Carter."

Harris nodded.

"It belonged to your biological father."

Emily stared at the watch.

"How did Richard have this?"

Harris answered quietly.

"That's exactly what we're going to ask him."

An hour later...

Richard Bennett finally agreed to speak.

But only under one condition.

"I'll talk..."

"...to Evelyn."

"No one else."

The FBI interrogation room was silent when Emily entered.

Richard looked exhausted.

The arrogant billionaire was gone.

In his place sat a frightened old man.

Emily remained standing.

"You wanted to see me."

Richard nodded.

"I owe you the truth."

Emily folded her arms.

"You owe me twenty-two years."

Richard lowered his head.

"You're right."

For several moments, neither spoke.

Finally Richard reached into the evidence bag on the table.

He looked at Daniel Carter's pocket watch.

"He gave me this..."

"...the night before everything happened."

Emily frowned.

"Why?"

"Because he trusted me."

Richard's voice broke.

"He called me his brother."

Emily said nothing.

Richard continued.

"I didn't plan to betray him."

"When we started the company..."

"...we really were friends."

"What changed?"

Richard looked away.

"Money."

He laughed bitterly.

"No..."

"That's a lie."

"It wasn't money."

"It was fear."

Emily stared at him.

"Fear of what?"

Richard slowly met her eyes.

"The Phoenix Consortium."

The room became still.

"They approached me first."

"They promised power."

"They promised wealth."

"They promised that if I helped them..."

"...my family would never want for anything again."

Emily asked quietly,

"And if you refused?"

Richard whispered,

"They would kill Margaret."

"They would kill Ethan."

"They would kill me."

Emily searched his face.

For the first time...

She believed he wasn't lying.

Richard continued.

"I tried warning Daniel."

"He refused to run."

"He said..."

Richard smiled sadly.

"'Some things are worth dying for.'"

Emily closed her eyes.

That sounded exactly like the man in the video.

Richard suddenly reached into his prison shirt.

The guards immediately tensed.

"It's okay."

Slowly...

He pulled out a folded piece of paper.

"I hid this."

"When?"

"The ambulance."

He handed it to Emily.

"I didn't want the Consortium to find it."

Emily unfolded the paper.

It was an old map.

Hand-drawn.

The Carter Estate.

A red circle marked a location beneath the west garden.

Written beside it, in Daniel Carter's handwriting:

If they force Richard to betray me... tell him I forgive him.

Emily looked up in shock.

Richard's eyes filled with tears.

"He knew."

"He always knew I'd break."

Emily whispered,

"He forgave you anyway."

Richard nodded.

"That's why I could never destroy that map."

Before Emily could ask another question—

The interrogation room lights suddenly flickered.

Every monitor went black.

The emergency generator failed.

A chilling female voice echoed through the building's speakers.

Calm.

Elegant.

Familiar.

Good evening, Evelyn Carter.

Richard's eyes widened in terror.

"No..."

The voice continued.

You have been searching for ghosts.

It is time we finally meet.

Every screen in the room lit up at once.

A woman in a white suit appeared.

Silver hair.

Piercing blue eyes.

The same woman who had visited Richard in prison.

She smiled directly at Emily.

My name is Victoria Ashcroft.

Chairwoman of the Phoenix Consortium.

She tilted her head slightly.

Then said the words that made everyone in the room stop breathing.

May you like

...and I was your mother's older sister.
