Chapter 4 – The FBI Came for Me

Chapter 4 – The FBI Came for Me
The roar of the helicopters swallowed every other sound.
Dust spiraled across the university courtyard as three black FBI helicopters settled onto the athletic field beyond the graduation stage.
Hundreds of graduates instinctively backed away.
Parents clutched their children.
Reporters sprinted toward the landing zone, cameras raised high.
Emily remained standing behind the podium.
The flash drive was still in her hand.
Her entire body felt numb.
The senior FBI agent climbed the stage with measured steps.
He was in his late fifties, broad-shouldered, with silver hair and calm blue eyes that had seen too many tragedies.
His jacket identified him as:
Special Agent Michael Harris
Federal Bureau of Investigation
He stopped a few feet from Emily.
Then, to everyone's surprise...
He removed his sunglasses.
"Emily..."
His voice was gentle.
"I know you've been called that your whole life."
He looked at the photograph in his hand.
"But according to every file we've kept for twenty-two years..."
"...your name is Evelyn Grace Carter."
Emily stared at him.
"How do you know me?"
Agent Harris smiled sadly.
"Because I promised your father I would never stop looking."
The courtyard fell silent again.
Professor Caroline Hughes exchanged a stunned glance with Benjamin Lawson.
Even Lawson looked surprised.
"You knew Daniel Carter personally?"
Harris nodded.
"We served in the Marines together before either of us entered civilian life."
Emily felt her heart race.
"My father..."
"...served in the military?"
"He did."
"And after retiring, he built one of the fastest-growing cybersecurity companies in the country."
Harris paused.
"He wasn't just wealthy."
"He developed security systems used by federal agencies."
Richard Bennett lowered his head.
The truth was unraveling faster than he had imagined.
Emily swallowed hard.
"If my father was so powerful..."
"...how could I disappear?"
No one answered immediately.
Instead, Harris slowly turned toward Richard.
"He didn't lose his daughter."
His voice became cold.
"Someone took her."
Richard's attorney, Daniel Morris, stepped forward.
"My client has not been convicted of anything."
Agent Harris didn't even look at him.
"That's true."
"But he is under federal investigation."
He reached into his briefcase.
Pulled out a thick folder.
Across the front was printed:
Federal Search Warrant
Signed only three hours earlier.
Richard's eyes widened.
"No..."
Harris met his gaze.
"Your offices."
"Your homes."
"Your private storage facilities."
"Your offshore accounts."
"We're searching all of them."
Richard whispered,
"Who authorized this?"
Harris answered calmly.
"A federal judge."
"And after what Miss Bennett released today..."
"...we'll likely receive several more."
Across the courtyard, Richard's phone began vibrating inside an evidence bag held by one of the officers.
Another officer glanced at the screen.
His face changed immediately.
"Sir..."
He handed the phone to Harris.
"It's his Chief Financial Officer."
Harris answered.
"This is Special Agent Harris."
Silence.
Then a panicked voice shouted through the speaker loudly enough for everyone nearby to hear.
"They're everywhere!"
"The FBI is inside headquarters!"
"They've seized the accounting servers!"
"They've frozen the executive floor!"
"The board members are running!"
The call abruptly disconnected.
Richard closed his eyes.
Twenty-seven years of carefully built deception...
...was collapsing in real time.
Emily looked at Agent Harris.
"Was all of this because of my flash drive?"
Harris shook his head.
"No."
"The flash drive gave us probable cause."
He smiled faintly.
"But your father made one critical mistake."
"What mistake?"
"He believed he was the only person keeping records."
Benjamin Lawson slowly opened another envelope from his briefcase.
"I suppose..."
"...it's time."
Inside were dozens of photocopied journals.
Each page was covered in handwritten notes.
Emily frowned.
"What are those?"
Lawson carefully handed her the first notebook.
"The journals your father wrote."
Emily looked confused.
"My father?"
"Your real father."
Her hands trembled as she opened the cover.
Across the first page, written in elegant handwriting:
If Evelyn Ever Reads This...
Emily immediately felt tears filling her eyes.
She turned the page.
The entry was dated eleven months before she disappeared.
Today Evelyn smiled for the first time when she heard music. Rebecca laughed so hard she cried. I recorded it three times because I'm terrified I'll forget this moment someday.
Emily covered her mouth.
She had never owned baby photographs.
Never celebrated a birthday with genuine joy.
Never heard stories about her infancy.
Yet here...
Was a father who had written about every tiny moment.
She continued reading.
Richard says I'm becoming too sentimental.
Maybe I am.
But I refuse to apologize for loving my daughter.
Emily looked toward Richard.
He refused to meet her eyes.
Another page.
Rebecca worries that someone inside the company is stealing research.
Richard says we're imagining things.
I hope he's right.
Emily slowly looked up.
"He already suspected him."
Lawson nodded.
"Daniel Carter became suspicious months before you vanished."
Professor Hughes quietly asked,
"What kind of research?"
Agent Harris answered.
"Advanced encryption technology."
"The type now worth billions."
The professor frowned.
"So Bennett Global..."
"...was built using stolen work?"
Harris looked directly at Richard.
"That's one of the questions we're investigating."
Suddenly another FBI agent hurried across the stage.
"Sir."
Harris turned.
"What is it?"
"We've received confirmation from Chicago."
He handed over a tablet.
Harris read silently.
His expression became serious.
"What happened?"
Emily asked.
Harris looked at her carefully.
"Your childhood home."
"My real home?"
He nodded.
"We just entered it."
Emily blinked.
"I thought it had been demolished."
"So did we."
He turned the tablet toward her.
A live drone image filled the screen.
An enormous estate surrounded by overgrown trees.
Dust covered every window.
The property looked abandoned.
Yet...
Several black SUVs were parked outside.
FBI agents were carrying evidence boxes from the house.
Emily whispered,
"It still exists..."
Harris nodded.
"It was secretly maintained."
"By whom?"
"We don't know yet."
Another agent approached.
"Sir..."
"We found something underground."
Harris frowned.
"What?"
"A hidden room."
The entire stage became silent.
"What kind of room?"
The younger agent hesitated.
"It appears to be..."
"...a private archive."
Lawson's face immediately lost color.
"No..."
Harris looked at him.
"You know what that means?"
Lawson nodded slowly.
"If Daniel Carter created a hidden archive..."
"...then the flash drive Emily found..."
"...was never the complete collection."
Emily stared at them.
"There are more files?"
Lawson answered quietly.
"Potentially..."
"...everything."
Richard suddenly began laughing.
The sound startled everyone.
It wasn't confident.
It wasn't arrogant.
It sounded broken.
"You'll never understand."
Harris walked toward him.
"What won't we understand?"
Richard looked directly at Emily.
"I wasn't the only one involved."
Emily felt a chill run through her body.
"What does that mean?"
Richard smiled.
"You think your family betrayed you."
He laughed again.
"You haven't even met the people who gave the orders."
The courtyard became deathly still.
Emily frowned.
"What people?"
Richard leaned forward despite the handcuffs.
"The people who wanted Daniel Carter erased."
"The people who wanted your mother to disappear."
"The people..."
He smiled bitterly.
"...who still don't know you're alive."
Emily's heart pounded.
"What are you talking about?"
Before Richard could answer—
One of the FBI agents shouted from below the stage.
"Agent Harris!"
Harris turned sharply.
"What is it?"
The agent held up his phone.
"We've identified a secure satellite transmission."
"Origin?"
"It came from overseas."
"Destination?"
The younger agent swallowed.
"Someone just sent a message from Switzerland."
"What does it say?"
The agent looked at Emily.
His face had turned pale.
"It says..."
"Target E has been located."
"And beneath that..."
"Begin Phase Two."
Richard's smile slowly disappeared.
May you like
Because even he hadn't expected that message.
