Chapter 15 – The Letter My Father Left Behind

Chapter 15 – The Letter My Father Left Behind

Richard Bennett's desperate warning echoed through Room E-12.

"Evelyn... don't believe Arthur!"

"HE WAS THE ONE WHO BETRAYED YOUR PARENTS!"

The screen went black.

Silence followed.

No one spoke.

Emily slowly turned toward Arthur Ashcroft.

The elderly man's face remained calm.

But for the first time...

There was unmistakable sorrow in his eyes.

Agent Michael Harris kept his weapon trained on Arthur.

"Is it true?"

Arthur didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at the sealed envelope still resting in Emily's hands.

"Open your father's letter."

Emily frowned.

"Why?"

"Because Daniel knew this moment would come."

"He already answered that question."

Outside Room E-12...

Automatic gunfire erupted again.

The tactical team exchanged fire with the advancing attackers.

One agent shouted over the radio.

"They've breached the east corridor!"

Another answered,

"We're falling back!"

The bunker shook violently.

Concrete dust drifted from the ceiling.

Time was running out.

Emily looked down at the envelope.

The paper had yellowed with age.

Across the front, in Daniel Carter's unmistakable handwriting, were the words:

To My Daughter

She carefully broke the wax seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

A small photograph slipped onto the table.

Emily picked it up.

It showed Daniel...

Rebecca...

Arthur...

And a baby wrapped in a pink blanket.

Emily.

All four of them were smiling.

Arthur was holding her.

Emily unfolded the letter.

Her hands trembled.

She began reading aloud.

My Dearest Peanut,

If this letter has reached you, then life has become far more complicated than I ever wanted for you.

The first thing you must know is this:

Never judge a person by a single story.

Emily paused.

She glanced toward Arthur.

She continued.

One day someone will tell you Arthur Ashcroft betrayed us.

Someone else will swear Richard Bennett destroyed our family.

Others will blame Victoria.

All of them will tell part of the truth.

None of them will tell all of it.

The room became completely still.

Even the distant gunfire seemed to fade.

Emily kept reading.

Arthur made terrible mistakes.

Richard made unforgivable choices.

Victoria surrendered herself to ambition.

But none of them planned the nightmare that followed.

Benjamin Lawson whispered,

"My God..."

Daniel had anticipated everything.

Emily turned the page.

The true enemy never wanted power.

Power was only a tool.

The real goal was control.

Control over governments.

Control over information.

Control over history itself.

Professor Hughes quietly asked,

"The Thirteenth Circle..."

Arthur nodded once.

"Daniel discovered them before any of us."

Emily continued reading.

If Arthur is standing beside you...

She stopped.

Slowly looked up.

Arthur met her eyes.

She read the next sentence.

...then trust him long enough to hear him.

Arthur quietly closed his eyes.

Emily's voice trembled.

"My father trusted you."

Arthur answered softly,

"Until the day he disappeared."

Emily continued.

I never believed Arthur betrayed me.

I believed someone wanted us to think he did.

Agent Harris lowered his pistol slightly.

"Richard was forced to accuse him."

Lawson nodded.

"The Thirteenth Circle is trying to divide everyone."

Emily reached the final page.

Daniel's handwriting became rushed.

Uneven.

As though he had been writing under pressure.

If I disappear...

Don't come looking for me first.

Find the Archive.

Because the Archive doesn't contain money.

It contains the truth.

Emily frowned.

"The Archive?"

Arthur answered immediately.

"The Twelfth Archive."

"The one Victoria failed to find."

Samuel looked surprised.

"You know where it is?"

Arthur slowly nodded.

"I always did."

Before anyone could ask another question—

Every monitor inside Room E-12 suddenly flashed.

A hidden security camera activated.

The image showed another chamber deep beneath the bunker.

Unlike the operations center...

This room looked ancient.

Stone walls.

Iron doors.

Twelve empty chairs arranged in a perfect circle.

At the center stood a glass pedestal.

Inside it rested a single leather-bound book.

Across its cover...

Gold lettering shimmered beneath the emergency lights.

THE TWELFTH ARCHIVE

Emily stared at the screen.

"That's what my father wanted me to find."

Arthur nodded.

"It's the only copy."

Suddenly—

The live camera feed changed.

A woman walked into the chamber.

Elegant.

White suit.

Silver hair.

Victoria Ashcroft.

She smiled as she looked directly into the camera.

"As expected."

"So you've finally found it."

Emily stepped toward the monitor.

"You already knew."

Victoria laughed softly.

"Of course."

"I've been waiting for you to unlock it."

Arthur's expression hardened.

"No..."

Victoria looked toward the camera.

"You really believed Daniel hid it from me?"

She smiled.

"He hid it for me."

Emily frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Victoria answered calmly.

"Only a Carter can open the Archive."

"You've just activated the final lock."

Arthur's face lost all color.

Emily noticed immediately.

"You didn't know..."

Arthur whispered,

"No."

Victoria smiled wider.

"Thank you, Evelyn."

"You've done exactly what I needed."

The lights inside the Archive chamber suddenly turned green.

Massive steel locks began disengaging one by one.

The sealed vault was opening.

Not because Victoria had found it...

But because Emily had unknowingly unlocked it.

Agent Harris shouted,

"Can we stop it?"

The technician shook his head desperately.

"No!"

"The security system is already executing."

"Estimated time until full access..."

He looked at the screen.

His face turned pale.

"Thirty seconds."

Victoria bowed her head politely toward Emily.

"Your father truly was brilliant."

"He built a vault that only his daughter could open."

She smiled.

"He simply forgot one thing."

Emily's voice hardened.

"What?"

Victoria looked directly into her eyes.

"He never imagined you'd open it for his greatest enemy."

The countdown reached:

00:20

00:19

00:18

Arthur grabbed Emily's arm.

"We have to reach the Archive first."

The bunker shook from another explosion.

The attackers had finally broken through the last defensive line.

Behind the smoke...

Dozens of black-clad soldiers rushed toward Room E-12.

Emily looked from the countdown...

To the advancing enemy...

Then back to her father's letter.

Tucked inside the final fold was one last handwritten sentence she hadn't noticed before.

It read:

"When the Archive opens... trust the person everyone else fears."

Emily slowly lifted her eyes.

There were only two people left standing closest to her.

Arthur Ashcroft.

And Samuel Hayes.

May you like

She had no idea which one her father meant.
