PART 14 — The Man I Called Father Hid the Truth About My Birth

PART 14 — The Man I Called Father Hid the Truth About My Birth

The screen went black.

But my mother's final words remained.

Like they had been carved into my mind.

"The man who raised you is not your biological father."

No one spoke.

Not for several seconds.

Maybe several minutes.

Time felt meaningless.

Because the one truth I had never questioned...

the one thing I believed was unbreakable...

was suddenly uncertain.

I looked at my father.

Not Finnley Robertson.

Not the billionaire.

Not the powerful businessman everyone feared.

Just my father.

The man who held my hand when I was sick.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who stayed awake beside my hospital bed when I had surgery as a teenager.

The man who cried when he first held Toby.

"Tell me it's not true."

My voice barely came out.

Dad looked devastated.

"Hailey..."

"Tell me."

He closed his eyes.

And that hesitation destroyed me.

Marcus stood quietly in the corner.

For the first time since arriving...

he didn't look victorious.

He looked sad.

Because even he understood the damage those words caused.

Agent Mitchell stepped forward.

"Everyone needs to remain calm."

"Mr. Robertson, we need an explanation."

My father nodded slowly.

"I know."

He sat down.

A man who had commanded boardrooms around the world suddenly looked like someone who had lost everything.

"When your mother and I married..."

"She already knew about the Robertson family secrets."

I stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

"It means your mother knew something about your birth before I did."

My heart raced.

"My birth?"

Dad looked at me.

"Hailey..."

"Your mother was pregnant before we married."

The room went silent.

I felt like I couldn't breathe.

"What?"

"She never told anyone."

"Not even me."

Marcus interrupted.

"Because she was afraid."

My father looked at him.

"Don't pretend you understand Eleanor."

Marcus's expression hardened.

"I understood her better than you did."

Agent Mitchell looked between them.

"Who was Hailey's biological father?"

Nobody answered.

And somehow...

that silence was the answer.

I stood.

"Who?"

My voice became louder.

"Who was my father?"

My father looked away.

Then he finally said:

"Richard."

The room exploded into silence.

My uncle.

The man who tried to destroy my family.

The man who manipulated Jasper.

The man who wanted my inheritance.

Richard Robertson.

I shook my head.

"No."

Dad looked at me with tears in his eyes.

"I didn't know at first."

"Your mother told me years later."

"She said she made a mistake before we met."

"She said she was afraid."

I felt numb.

"So you knew?"

"Yes."

"And you still raised me?"

He looked directly at me.

"Because you were my daughter."

The words came immediately.

No hesitation.

"You were never a mistake to me."

My anger and confusion collided.

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Richard was dangerous."

"Because your grandfather warned me about him."

"Because I knew if Richard ever discovered you were his daughter..."

"He would use you."

Marcus shook his head.

"Convenient story."

My father looked at him.

"You know nothing."

"I know Eleanor died trying to reveal the truth."

Agent Mitchell interrupted.

"We need evidence."

"Not family accusations."

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

"We can run DNA tests."

Everyone looked at him.

"Between Hailey and Finnley."

"Between Hailey and Richard."

"That will confirm everything."

I stood frozen.

A DNA test.

Something so simple.

Something that could change my entire identity.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

Everyone looked at me.

I answered.

"Hello?"

A familiar voice.

Richard.

"Now you know."

My blood turned cold.

"You knew?"

He laughed softly.

"Of course I knew."

"You really believed Finnley was your father?"

My hand tightened around the phone.

"Why?"

"Why did you hide this?"

Richard's voice became bitter.

"Because your existence destroyed my life."

I closed my eyes.

"Your daughter?"

"No."

His answer was immediate.

"Your existence proved I was never chosen."

"What are you talking about?"

"Your grandfather knew."

"He knew you existed."

"He knew you carried Robertson blood."

"And he chose Finnley anyway."

I felt sick.

"You used Jasper."

"Yes."

"You used Victor."

"Yes."

"You tried to destroy Dad."

A pause.

Then:

"I tried to reclaim what was mine."

My father stepped closer.

"Richard."

The phone went silent.

Then Richard spoke.

"You know what's funny, Finnley?"

"After all these years..."

"You're finally going to lose everything."

The call ended.

Thirty minutes later, the DNA testing began.

Nobody left.

Nobody spoke.

The entire family waited.

A lifetime of questions reduced to one result.

While we waited, Agent Mitchell approached me.

"There is something else."

"What?"

She hesitated.

"We analyzed your mother's video."

"And?"

"She wasn't recording it before she died."

I frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"She recorded it recently."

My heart stopped.

"Recently?"

"Yes."

"Your mother may have been alive much longer than anyone believed."

I stared at her.

"No."

Agent Mitchell handed me a report.

"The timestamp was altered."

"Someone tried to hide the recording date."

My hands shook as I read it.

The video wasn't fifteen years old.

It was recorded...

three months ago.

I looked at my father.

At Marcus.

At Daniel.

A terrifying thought entered my mind.

My mother didn't leave a final message before she died.

She left a message because...

she knew someone was coming for me.

May you like

And she might still be alive.
