PART 5 — My Mother-in-Law Came to Demand Everything… and Left With Nothing

PART 5 — My Mother-in-Law Came to Demand Everything… and Left With Nothing

Daniel opened the security monitor on the wall.

Gillian Lawson stood outside the estate's iron gates wearing oversized sunglasses and a designer coat, despite the warm afternoon.

She wasn't alone.

Priscilla stood beside her with crossed arms, scrolling through her phone as though she were waiting outside a café instead of one of the most secure private estates in the country.

Neither woman looked nervous.

They looked offended.

"They've been here for twenty minutes," Daniel said.

"They refused to leave."

"What do they want?" I asked.

"They insist on speaking to you personally."

Dad glanced at me.

"You don't owe them a single word."

I looked down at Toby sleeping peacefully in my arms.

"No."

"But I'm done hiding from people who think they can intimidate me."

Ten minutes later, I met them in the estate's visitor pavilion—a separate building just inside the gates, designed specifically so uninvited guests never entered the main house.

Two security officers remained discreetly nearby.

The moment Gillian saw me, she didn't ask how I was recovering.

She didn't ask about her grandson.

Instead, she frowned.

"So this is how you've been living."

I looked around the elegant room.

"I've lived here before."

She ignored my answer.

"You embarrassed my son."

Priscilla nodded dramatically.

"The whole business community is talking."

I almost laughed.

"That's what you're worried about?"

Gillian stepped closer.

"Jasper lost everything because of you."

"No," I replied calmly.

"He lost everything because of his own choices."

"You poisoned Finnley against him!"

I met her eyes.

"My father didn't need my help."

"He watched your son abandon his daughter five days after major surgery."

"That was enough."

Priscilla slammed her purse onto the table.

"You've always acted innocent."

"You trapped Jasper with a baby."

I stared at her in disbelief.

"Toby wasn't a trap."

"He's a child."

"A child your brother barely held."

For the first time, Priscilla had no sarcastic response.

Gillian folded her arms.

"We're willing to be reasonable."

I raised an eyebrow.

"Reasonable?"

"Withdraw the divorce."

"Convince your father to return Jasper's company."

"And we'll forget this unpleasant misunderstanding."

The room became completely silent.

Even Daniel looked stunned.

I slowly stood.

"A misunderstanding?"

"You call sending your recovering daughter-in-law home on a city bus with a newborn..."

"...a misunderstanding?"

Gillian didn't flinch.

"You've always been too sensitive."

"My generation didn't complain after childbirth."

I took one careful step toward her.

"My generation also doesn't believe women should earn respect by suffering in silence."

Before she could answer, Toby stirred in my arms.

His tiny fingers wrapped around mine.

Everything else faded away.

I looked at my son.

Then back at the woman standing before me.

"You know what hurts the most?"

Gillian frowned.

"You've seen your grandson twice."

"And both times..."

"...you've spent more time talking about money than about him."

For the first time, something flickered across her face.

Not guilt.

Embarrassment.

Because she knew I was right.

Dad entered the pavilion.

The atmosphere changed instantly.

Finnley Robertson carried himself with quiet authority.

He didn't raise his voice.

He didn't need to.

"Gillian."

She straightened immediately.

"Mr. Robertson."

"You requested this meeting."

"You've had it."

She forced a polite smile.

"We simply came to discuss a fair solution."

Dad nodded once.

"Very well."

"My solution is simple."

He placed a folder on the table.

Gillian reached for it eagerly.

Instead of financial documents...

She found printed photographs.

The first showed me climbing onto the city bus, one hand protecting my surgical incision while holding Toby.

The second showed Jasper laughing beside his family as their SUV drove away.

The third came from the restaurant's valet camera.

Jasper smiling.

Champagne in his hand.

Less than thirty minutes after abandoning his wife and newborn.

Gillian's face slowly lost its color.

"Where did you get these?"

Dad answered evenly.

"The truth has a way of leaving evidence."

He placed another document beside the photographs.

Hospital discharge instructions.

Highlighted in yellow was one sentence:

"Patient must not travel alone following cesarean delivery. Family assistance strongly recommended."

Dad looked directly at Gillian.

"Your son ignored medical advice."

"He endangered my daughter's recovery."

"He neglected his newborn son."

"And you want to negotiate?"

Priscilla suddenly stood.

"This is ridiculous!"

"You people think money makes you better than everyone else."

I smiled sadly.

"No."

"It gives us the ability to protect the people we love."

"Something your family never understood."

Security quietly approached.

Daniel spoke respectfully.

"The meeting is over."

Gillian's expression hardened.

"You'll regret this."

Dad didn't even blink.

"No."

"The only regret I have..."

"...is believing my daughter had found a family worthy of her."

As they walked toward the gate, Gillian stopped and turned around.

"This isn't finished."

Dad answered without looking back.

"You're right."

"It isn't."

"Tomorrow morning, my attorneys will file a civil action seeking reimbursement for every personal expense your family charged to Lawson Technologies."

Gillian froze.

"What?"

Robertson Global's forensic accountants had worked all night.

Luxury vacations.

Jewelry.

Home renovations.

Designer handbags.

Every dollar had been traced.

Every receipt had been copied.

Every transaction documented.

Dad's voice remained calm.

"Tell Jasper..."

"...the consequences are only beginning."

That evening, I stood on the nursery balcony holding Toby as the sunset painted the sky in shades of gold and crimson.

For the first time in years, I wasn't afraid of tomorrow.

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

It contained only one sentence.

"You don't know the whole truth about Jasper's business partner."

No name.

No explanation.

Just that cryptic warning.

A second message arrived seconds later.

"If you want to protect your son... don't ignore this."

I stared at the screen.

Someone else had just stepped into our lives.

And somehow...

May you like

They knew secrets even my father hadn't uncovered.
