PART 9 — The Secret My Father Hid From Me for Twenty Years

PART 9 — The Secret My Father Hid From Me for Twenty Years
For several seconds, neither of us spoke.
The room that had always felt like my safest place suddenly felt unfamiliar.
My father stood near the window, staring into the darkness outside.
I had seen him negotiate billion-dollar deals.
I had seen him face angry investors.
I had seen him destroy business rivals with nothing more than a few carefully chosen words.
But I had never seen fear in his eyes.
Not until now.
"Dad."
He didn't answer.
"Dad, what inheritance?"
Slowly, he turned around.
And for the first time in my life...
Finnley Robertson looked like a father before he looked like a businessman.
"Your grandfather left something behind."
I frowned.
"Grandfather?"
"He passed away when I was young."
Dad nodded.
"Before he died, he created a private trust."
"A trust worth billions."
I stared at him.
"Why don't I know about this?"
"Because it wasn't meant to be accessed until you were ready."
"Ready for what?"
He looked at Toby sleeping peacefully nearby.
"To become the next guardian."
I shook my head.
"I don't understand."
Dad walked to the bookshelf and removed an old leather-bound file.
The cover was worn.
The edges were faded.
But my family's name was engraved across the front.
ROBERTSON LEGACY TRUST
He placed it in front of me.
"Your grandfather believed wealth without responsibility destroys families."
"He created a system."
"A system that could only be passed to someone who understood compassion before power."
I opened the file.
The first page contained legal documents.
The second page contained names.
My grandfather.
My father.
Then...
Mine.
My hands trembled.
"My name has been here for years?"
Dad nodded.
"The trust transfers to you on your thirtieth birthday."
"Unless..."
"Unless what?"
His expression darkened.
"Unless someone challenges your eligibility."
My heart sank.
"Richard."
Dad nodded.
"He believes the trust should belong to him."
"But he can't take it."
"Not directly."
"So he needed leverage."
I whispered:
"Jasper."
"Exactly."
The pieces started connecting.
The mysterious investment.
Victor Kane.
The company.
The attacks.
The humiliation.
It wasn't random.
Jasper wasn't the target.
He was the weapon.
Richard didn't want Lawson Technologies.
He wanted access to Robertson Global.
And I was the final obstacle.
A knock interrupted us.
Daniel entered quickly.
"Sir."
"We found movement at the old estate."
Dad immediately stood.
"How many?"
"Unknown."
"But satellite footage shows multiple vehicles."
"Richard isn't alone."
Agent Mitchell looked concerned.
"Then we need to assume he's planning something."
I looked at my father.
"We need to go there."
"No."
The answer came instantly.
"You stay here."
"Dad—"
"No."
His voice softened.
"Hailey, listen to me."
"I lost control once."
"When I allowed you to believe you had to hide who you were."
"I won't make that mistake again."
But I shook my head.
"He already knows about Toby."
"He already knows about me."
"Running away won't stop him."
Dad looked at me.
And I saw something change.
He wasn't seeing his injured daughter anymore.
He was seeing the woman I had become.
A mother.
A survivor.
A Robertson.
Finally, he nodded.
"Then we go together."
Two hours later...
Our convoy approached the abandoned Robertson estate.
The property had been closed for decades.
Overgrown gardens surrounded the massive stone mansion.
The place looked frozen in time.
Like a memory nobody wanted to revisit.
Security vehicles surrounded the area.
Daniel spoke through the radio.
"Movement inside."
"Three individuals confirmed."
Dad stepped out.
I followed.
"Hailey."
"I said I was coming."
He sighed.
"Your mother was exactly the same."
I smiled faintly.
"She sounds difficult."
He looked at me.
"She was."
"That's why I loved her."
The front doors opened before we reached them.
Richard stood inside.
Older than I remembered.
But still carrying the same confidence.
The same arrogance.
"Finnley."
My father's expression hardened.
"Richard."
Richard smiled.
"Twenty years."
"And you still walk like you own the world."
Dad replied calmly.
"Because I built it."
Richard laughed.
"No."
"You inherited it."
His eyes moved to me.
Then Toby.
"So this is the future heir."
I stepped forward.
"Leave my son out of this."
Richard smiled.
"Protective."
"Just like your mother."
The mention of my mother made my father's face change.
"Don't speak about her."
Richard ignored him.
"She always believed you were better than me."
"She was right."
The smile disappeared from Richard's face.
"You don't understand, Hailey."
"I spent my entire life watching Finnley receive everything."
"The company."
"The respect."
"The admiration."
"Even your mother chose him."
I stared at him.
"So this was never about business."
"No."
"It was always about being chosen."
Richard pulled out a document.
"I have proof."
"Proof that your father violated the original trust agreement."
Dad's expression changed.
"What?"
Richard smiled.
"Did you really think I spent years planning this without evidence?"
He handed the document to Daniel.
Daniel scanned it quickly.
His face became serious.
"Sir..."
"What?"
"This appears to be a challenge clause."
Dad took the paper.
I watched his expression change.
"What does it say?"
He didn't answer.
Richard did.
"It says if the Robertson heir is proven incapable of protecting the family legacy..."
"The trust transfers."
"To the next eligible family member."
My eyes narrowed.
"And that would be you?"
Richard smiled.
"Exactly."
Suddenly, Daniel's phone rang.
He answered.
Then his expression changed.
"Miss Robertson..."
"What happened?"
He looked at me.
"It's Jasper."
My heart stopped.
"What about him?"
"He disappeared."
Agent Mitchell stepped forward.
"When?"
"Thirty minutes ago."
"His phone was found abandoned."
Dad looked toward Richard.
And for the first time...
Richard looked nervous.
Because everyone realized the same thing.
Richard may have planned everything.
But someone had just made a move without him.
Someone who had access to Jasper.
Someone who knew all the secrets.
Richard's smile faded.
"I don't know anything about this."
Nobody believed him.
Because suddenly...
the game had changed.
There was a new player.
And this person had taken the one man who could expose everything.
