PART 15 — My Mother Was Alive, and She Had Been Watching Everything

PART 15 — My Mother Was Alive, and She Had Been Watching Everything

The DNA test results were supposed to answer questions.

Instead...

they created even more.

Because before we could learn the truth about my father...

we discovered something impossible.

My mother might still be alive.

For fifteen years, I had lived with one painful certainty:

My mother was gone.

I remembered the funeral.

The flowers.

The people whispering.

My father's empty expression.

I remembered being told that a car accident had taken her away.

I remembered learning how to live without her.

And now someone was telling me...

she might have been alive this entire time.

I looked at Agent Mitchell.

"How is that possible?"

She handed me the report.

"We analyzed the video metadata."

"The original recording date was hidden."

"Someone intentionally changed it."

"Why?"

"To make people believe it was old."

Dad stood silently.

Too silently.

I looked at him.

"Dad."

He didn't answer.

"Dad, did you know?"

His eyes closed.

"No."

The answer came quickly.

But the pain in his face told me something.

He was afraid.

Marcus suddenly spoke.

"I knew."

Everyone turned toward him.

"What?"

He looked down.

"Eleanor contacted me."

My father's expression changed.

"You spoke to my wife?"

Marcus nodded.

"Months before she disappeared."

The room became tense.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Marcus looked at my father.

"Because she asked me not to."

"She said if you knew..."

"You would try to protect her."

My father stepped forward.

"And I would have."

"Exactly."

Marcus's voice became bitter.

"That's why she didn't trust you with the truth."

I looked at Marcus.

"What did my mother tell you?"

He hesitated.

Then answered:

"She told me she discovered who was trying to destroy the Robertson family."

"Who?"

Marcus looked at Richard's photograph on the table.

"She believed Richard was only a pawn."

Everyone froze.

A pawn.

Not the mastermind.

The same thing Jasper had said.

The same thing Victor had hinted.

Richard wasn't the beginning.

He was just another person being used.

Agent Mitchell immediately asked:

"Did she tell you who was controlling him?"

Marcus shook his head.

"No."

"But she was trying to find out."

Suddenly, Daniel entered.

His expression was serious.

"Sir."

"What happened?"

"We found something at the old estate."

Dad turned.

"What?"

"Another hidden room."

Twenty minutes later, we returned to the abandoned Robertson property.

This time, the atmosphere felt different.

Because we knew someone had been hiding secrets there for decades.

Behind an old wooden wall in the basement was a hidden chamber.

Inside were boxes.

Hundreds of documents.

Photographs.

Letters.

And one object that made my father stop breathing.

A necklace.

My mother's necklace.

The one she wore every day.

I picked it up carefully.

"How did this get here?"

Nobody answered.

Then Daniel found an envelope.

My name was written on it.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

For Hailey.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My mother's handwriting.

My heart almost broke.

"My beautiful Hailey,"

"If you are reading this, it means I failed to protect you from the truth."

"But I need you to understand something."

"The people who hurt our family are not motivated by money alone."

"They are motivated by resentment."

I continued reading.

"Someone inside our family has spent years trying to erase the people they believe stand in their way."

"Your father, Finnley, loves you more than anything."

I stopped.

My eyes filled with tears.

"But he made one mistake."

"He believed he could protect everyone by carrying every secret alone."

"Secrets do not disappear."

"They grow."

The next sentence made my heart race.

"Hailey, your biological father is Richard Robertson."

Everyone became silent.

The DNA result wasn't even needed anymore.

My mother had known.

"But Richard is not the person you should fear."

"The person controlling him is someone who has been close to our family longer than anyone realizes."

The letter ended with one final line.

"Find the woman named Clara."

I looked up.

"Who is Clara?"

Nobody answered.

Then my father whispered:

"No."

I turned toward him.

"You know that name."

His face went pale.

"Yes."

"Who is she?"

He looked at the old family photographs.

And then said:

"Your grandmother's sister."

Marcus stepped back.

"That can't be."

Dad nodded slowly.

"Everyone believed she died decades ago."

"But she didn't."

Agent Mitchell looked confused.

"Who is Clara Robertson?"

My father answered:

"The first person who tried to destroy the Robertson family."

The room went quiet.

A woman we had never heard of.

A woman who supposedly disappeared.

A woman connected to my grandfather.

And somehow...

she was connected to everything.

Then Daniel's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

"What?"

He listened.

Then looked at me.

"Miss Robertson..."

"We found a location connected to Clara."

My heart raced.

"Where?"

Daniel hesitated.

"An old private medical facility."

"Why?"

He looked at the file.

"Because someone has been paying for a patient's treatment there."

"Someone hidden for fifteen years."

My father's voice dropped.

"Who?"

Daniel looked at him.

"The patient name is registered as..."

He paused.

Then said:

"Eleanor Robertson."

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the impossible had just become real.

My mother wasn't just alive.

Someone had been hiding her.

And whoever did it...

May you like

had been watching our family fall apart for fifteen years.
