PART 7 — The FBI Knocked on the Door, and Jasper Finally Learned the Truth

PART 7 — The FBI Knocked on the Door, and Jasper Finally Learned the Truth

The words stayed in my mind long after Daniel ended the call.

The FBI is investigating Lawson Technologies.

A week ago, my biggest fear was whether my marriage could survive.

Now I was sitting in my father's estate surrounded by lawyers, investigators, and evidence that suggested the man I married might have been connected to something far more dangerous than arrogance.

Dad looked at Ethan.

"How much did Jasper know?"

Ethan shook his head.

"I don't know."

"But I know one thing."

"Victor Kane controlled everything."

An hour later, two federal agents arrived at the Robertson Estate.

They introduced themselves as Special Agent Laura Mitchell and Special Agent Thomas Reed.

They were professional, calm, and direct.

No drama.

No accusations.

Just facts.

Agent Mitchell placed a folder on the table.

"We've been investigating financial irregularities connected to Lawson Technologies for eleven months."

She looked at me.

"We did not expect to find your name connected to the company."

I understood immediately.

"Because my investment was hidden."

She nodded.

"Correct."

"My father's investment."

"Yes."

Agent Reed opened another file.

"Victor Kane, CFO of Lawson Technologies, created several offshore accounts."

"He moved company funds through shell corporations."

"He also transferred proprietary technology documents without authorization."

Dad frowned.

"How much?"

Agent Reed looked at the report.

"Estimated losses exceed forty million dollars."

The room went quiet.

I looked at Ethan.

"Did Jasper know about any of this?"

Ethan rubbed his forehead.

"Jasper wasn't involved in the financial side."

"He cared about investors, publicity, and becoming famous."

"He trusted Victor completely."

Agent Mitchell nodded.

"That matches our current findings."

"At this stage, Mr. Lawson appears to have been manipulated."

For the first time in days...

I felt something unexpected.

Not forgiveness.

Not sympathy.

Just understanding.

The man who hurt me was still responsible for his choices.

But perhaps...

he wasn't responsible for every monster around him.

Meanwhile...

Jasper sat alone in his hotel room watching the news.

The television displayed his company's logo.

The headline beneath it made his hands freeze.

FEDERAL INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED INTO LAWSON TECHNOLOGIES FINANCIAL DEALINGS

Reporters surrounded the company headquarters.

Former employees gave interviews.

Investors demanded answers.

Jasper grabbed the remote and turned off the television.

"No..."

He immediately called Victor.

Straight to voicemail.

Again.

Again.

Nothing.

His hands trembled.

For the first time...

he wondered if he had been the victim too.

An hour later, Jasper drove to Victor's mansion.

The gates were locked.

The lights were off.

The house looked abandoned.

A neighbor walking by recognized him.

"Looking for Victor?"

Jasper turned.

"Where is he?"

The neighbor shrugged.

"Moved out yesterday."

"Didn't even say goodbye."

Jasper's heart sank.

"What?"

"He packed everything."

"Someone warned him."

Jasper returned to his car.

Then he noticed something under the windshield wiper.

An envelope.

No name.

No address.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Three words:

YOU WERE WARNED.

His breathing stopped.

At the bottom of the page was a signature.

V.K.

That evening, Jasper arrived at the Robertson Estate.

Security immediately blocked him.

"I need to see Hailey."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Do you have an appointment?"

"No."

"But this is important."

Daniel studied him.

"You understand you are not allowed past this point."

Jasper looked exhausted.

"Please."

"Tell her I'm not here to fight."

"I'm here because I think someone destroyed both our lives."

When Daniel told me Jasper was outside...

I almost refused.

Almost.

But something in his voice made me hesitate.

"Let him in."

We met in the same pavilion where Gillian had demanded money days earlier.

But this time Jasper looked completely different.

No expensive suit.

No confidence.

No arrogance.

Just a tired man carrying the weight of his mistakes.

"I owe you an apology."

I remained silent.

He continued.

"I know saying sorry doesn't fix anything."

"It doesn't erase what I did."

"No."

"It doesn't.

"But I need you to know something."

"I never knew about Victor."

I watched him carefully.

"How convenient."

He nodded.

"I deserve that."

He placed his phone on the table.

"I found this today."

The message appeared.

YOU WERE WARNED.

I looked at it.

"Victor sent this?"

"Yes."

"Why would he threaten you?"

Jasper laughed quietly.

"Because I think he knows I'm going to expose him."

Before I could answer, my father entered.

Jasper immediately stood.

"Mr. Robertson."

Dad looked at the phone.

Then at Jasper.

"Why should we believe you?"

Jasper swallowed.

"Because if I go down..."

"Victor wins."

"And I don't want that."

Agent Mitchell arrived moments later.

She had been waiting nearby.

She looked at Jasper.

"Mr. Lawson."

"You're aware this investigation is active?"

"Yes."

"Then you should know cooperating may help your situation."

Jasper nodded.

"I'll cooperate."

The agent studied him.

"One question."

"Why?"

"Why help now?"

Jasper looked toward me.

His voice became quiet.

"Because I lost the person who loved me before I realized what I had."

"And because..."

He looked down.

"I don't want my son growing up believing his father was a man who ran away when things got hard."

For the first time since this nightmare began...

I saw something different in Jasper's eyes.

Not pride.

Not entitlement.

Regret.

But regret alone wasn't enough.

Trust wasn't rebuilt with words.

It was rebuilt with actions.

Later that night, Daniel brought another update.

"Miss Robertson."

"We found Victor Kane."

My father looked up.

"Where?"

Daniel placed a photograph on the table.

Victor standing beside a private aircraft.

"He's leaving the country."

"When?"

"Tonight."

I stared at the image.

A man who stole millions.

A man who manipulated my husband.

A man who thought he could disappear.

Dad's expression hardened.

"Not if we reach him first."

Daniel nodded.

"But there's one problem."

"What?"

"He wasn't alone."

"He had help."

The room became silent.

"Who?"

Daniel placed another photograph beside Victor's.

My heart stopped.

Because the person standing next to him...

was someone I never expected.

May you like

Someone from my own family.
