Chapter 1 - The Camera Above the Door

The tiny red light above the suite entrance kept blinking.
Isabella Rossi stared at it as though it were the barrel of a loaded weapon.
For the first time that night, her flawless confidence disappeared.
Marcus followed Elaine Parkerâs gaze toward the camera.
His expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
Khloe noticed it even through the pain tightening across her body.
Marcus already knew the camera was there.
He had attended dozens of private foundation meetings inside that suite.
He had personally approved the hospitalâs expanded security system six months earlier.
Yet he had said nothing when Isabella accused Khloe of attacking her.
âMarcus,â Khloe whispered.
He finally looked down at his wife.
âDonât speak.â
His voice was controlled, but something beneath it was wrong.
âAn ambulance team is coming.â
âWe are already inside a hospital,â Elaine said quietly.
Marcus looked at her.
Elaine did not lower her eyes.
Before anyone could say more, heavy footsteps approached from the corridor.
Dr. Richard Hale entered with the hospitalâs security director and two nurses.
Richard was Khloeâs uncle, but nothing in his expression looked warm or familial.
He saw his pregnant niece on the floor.
He saw the broken glass.
He saw Isabella standing above her.
Then he looked at Marcus.
âWhat happened?â
âShe fell,â Isabella said quickly.
Richard turned toward her.
âI didnât ask you.â
The security director moved toward Khloe, but Richard stopped him with one lifted hand.
âMedical staff only.â
Two nurses rushed forward.
They carefully helped Khloe onto a rolling stretcher while checking her pulse and asking about the baby.
Khloe gripped one nurseâs wrist.
âThe camera.â
The nurse looked confused.
âSave the recording.â
Richard heard her.
His gaze rose to the blinking red light.
âLock down the entire floor,â he ordered.
Marcus stepped forward.
âRichard, letâs not create a scene.â
Richard looked at him with chilling calm.
âMy niece is seven months pregnant and lying on the floor after being attacked inside my hospital.â
âYou donât know that she was attacked.â
The room went still.
Khloe slowly turned her head toward her husband.
Isabellaâs lips parted.
Elaine stared at Marcus in disbelief.
Richard took one measured step closer.
âAre you saying my niece is lying?â
Marcusâs jaw tightened.
âIâm saying we should examine the evidence before making accusations.â
Richard held his gaze.
âFor once tonight, we agree.â
He faced the security director.
âRecover every second recorded in this suite.â
The director nodded.
âAnd make three copies.â
Marcusâs eyes narrowed.
Richard noticed.
âOne goes to hospital counsel.â
He pointed toward Elaine.
âOne goes to Ms. Parker.â
Then he looked directly at Marcus.
âAnd one stays with me.â
The nurses began rolling Khloe toward the door.
As the stretcher passed Isabella, Khloe saw something that frightened her more than the attack.
Isabella was no longer looking at the camera.
She was looking at Marcus.
And Marcus gave her the smallest possible shake of his head.
A warning.
Do not speak.
Khloe closed her eyes.
The baby moved beneath her hands.
The movement was weak, but it was there.
She whispered a promise only her child could hear.
âIâm going to find out everything.â
May you like
Behind her, Richardâs voice cut through the suite.
âNo one leaves this floor until I see that footage.â
