Chapter 17 - The Voice in the Vault

Marcus’s father’s vault was hidden beneath the oldest Thorne Global office.

Federal agents entered first.

Khloe watched through a secure video connection from Richard’s home.

She was no longer allowed to travel.

The baby’s health had become more important than witnessing every discovery in person.

Elaine remained with her.

Richard stood near the fireplace, speaking quietly with investigators.

On the screen, an agent inserted the brass key.

The vault opened.

Inside were financial ledgers, old research drives, and a silver recording device.

A label had been attached to it.

FOR DANIEL HALE.

Khloe’s father.

The lead agent activated the recording.

Marcus’s father began speaking.

His voice was weak.

“Daniel, if you hear this, Victor has already decided I am no longer useful.”

Khloe leaned closer.

The recording had been made weeks before her father’s death.

“Victor designed the false access program.”

Marcus’s father coughed.

“He sold it to anyone willing to pay.”

The confession named hospital executives, judges, corporate officers, and private investigators.

It described how Victor altered medical records to remove witnesses from lawsuits.

It described fabricated diagnoses used to seize companies from vulnerable owners.

Then the voice slowed.

“Daniel discovered everything.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“I told Victor to leave him alone.”

Marcus’s father sounded ashamed.

“I believed Victor only intended to frighten him.”

Khloe stopped breathing.

“But Victor altered Daniel’s heart medication.”

The room became completely still.

“He made the dosage appear correct in the hospital system.”

Khloe’s father had not died naturally.

He had been murdered through the same technology he tried to destroy.

Richard sat heavily in a chair.

Khloe watched him.

“You suspected.”

“I feared it.”

“You let me believe it was a heart attack.”

“I had no proof.”

“You had the system.”

“I also had a hospital full of patients whose records Victor could destroy.”

Khloe looked back toward the screen.

The confession continued.

“Richard helped preserve the offline archive.”

Khloe turned toward her uncle.

“He protected it because I asked him to.”

Marcus’s father took a weak breath.

“If Daniel dies, the trust must remain hidden until his grandchild is born.”

Khloe placed both hands over her stomach.

“Only a new Hale heir can activate the final ownership code.”

The recording ended with one last warning.

“Victor will not stop.”

A message appeared on Elaine’s phone.

She read it.

Her face changed.

“What is it?”

“A live video.”

“From whom?”

Elaine turned the screen toward Khloe.

Victor Lang stood inside an unfamiliar room.

Behind him, Marcus sat tied to a chair.

A bruise marked his face, but he was conscious.

Victor looked directly into the camera.

“Khloe.”

His tone remained calm.

“You now know what your father knew.”

Marcus lifted his head.

“Do not give him anything.”

Victor struck the back of the chair, silencing him.

Khloe’s hand tightened around Elaine’s phone.

Victor continued.

“At midnight, the trust’s prenatal protections become permanent.”

Richard moved closer.

“What does he want?”

Victor answered as though he had heard the question.

“The original ownership code.”

Khloe stared at the screen.

“I do not have it.”

Victor smiled.

“Yes, you do.”

His gaze dropped toward her stomach.

“Your father hid it in the child’s medical identity.”

The video ended.

A second message appeared.

A location.

An abandoned Thorne Global research facility.
