Chapter 6 - Richard’s Secret

Khloe confronted Richard before sunrise.

She showed him Rachel’s email.

She showed him Elaine’s recording.

Then she asked the question directly.

“What were you hiding from me?”

Richard stood near the window, watching the first gray light appear above the city.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Elaine remained beside the door.

The security guard had been dismissed.

This conversation required privacy.

Finally, Richard turned around.

“Your father did not simply invest in Thorne Global.”

Khloe waited.

“He created it.”

The words landed with unexpected force.

“My father’s company was Hale Medical Industries.”

“That was the public company.”

Richard sat opposite her.

“Thorne Global began as a private research division developing hospital security systems, patient databases, and insurance software.”

“Why hide it?”

“Because your father discovered the software could be abused.”

Richard placed both hands on the table.

“It could alter records.”

“Medical records?”

“All records.”

Khloe looked toward the monitor beside her bed.

“Diagnoses.”

“Yes.”

“Security footage.”

“Yes.”

“Financial documents.”

“Yes.”

A terrible understanding formed.

Marcus had not simply gained access to the hospital system.

His company had built it.

“Your father shut the project down,” Richard continued.

“But Marcus’s father purchased the division through a shell company.”

“And you allowed it?”

“I helped him.”

Elaine stepped forward.

“Why?”

Richard’s eyes hardened with old regret.

“Because I believed the technology could still help hospitals.”

“What changed?”

“Marcus’s father began selling hidden access to private clients.”

Khloe felt sick.

“People could rewrite medical histories.”

“They could remove evidence, create diagnoses, manipulate insurance claims, or make someone appear legally incompetent.”

The forged psychiatric evaluation no longer seemed like an isolated scheme.

It was a demonstration of a system Marcus’s family had controlled for years.

“Did my father know?” Khloe asked.

“He discovered it shortly before he died.”

The room became silent.

Her father’s death had been ruled a heart attack.

He had collapsed inside his office after a late meeting.

No autopsy had been performed because his medical history made the death appear natural.

“Who was his last meeting with?”

Richard looked at her.

“Marcus’s father.”

Khloe’s throat tightened.

“And you never told me?”

“I had no proof.”

“You had twenty years.”

“I had fear.”

Richard’s honesty did not excuse him.

It only made the betrayal clearer.

Khloe turned away.

Elaine crossed her arms.

“Rachel’s email said to ask you.”

“Rachel discovered payments from Thorne Global to hospital executives.”

“Including you?”

Richard nodded.

Khloe stared at him.

“You took their money.”

“I accepted funding for the hospital.”

“That is not an answer.”

Richard lowered his eyes.

“I allowed Thorne Global to maintain administrator access after your father ordered the system removed.”

Khloe’s voice became cold.

“So Marcus could erase the footage because you left the door open.”

“Yes.”

Richard looked older than he had the night before.

“I thought I was protecting the hospital.”

“You were protecting yourself.”

He did not deny it.

Khloe placed one hand over her stomach.

“Then help me close the door.”

Richard met her gaze.

“How?”

“Give me everything.”

“The records could destroy this hospital.”

“They almost destroyed my child.”

Richard flinched.

Khloe did not soften.

“You can protect your reputation.”

She looked toward the hallway where Marcus waited with his attorneys.

“Or you can protect the truth.”

Richard stood in silence.

Then he removed a small key from his pocket.

“There is an offline archive beneath the original hospital building.”

“What is inside it?”

“Every system transaction made since your father’s death.”

Khloe reached for the key.

Richard held it tightly for one final second.

“If Marcus discovers the archive exists, he will do anything to reach it first.”

Khloe took the key from him.

“He already tried to take everything from me.”

Her voice remained steady.

“Now I’m taking it back.”
