Chapter 15 - The Story Isabella Could Not Control

By morning, Naomi Grant’s investigation dominated every major news channel.

The headline named Marcus Thorne, Isabella Rossi, Victor Lang, and Dr. Owen Mercer.

It described forged medical records.

It revealed stolen hospital funds.

It included Elaine’s recording of Isabella whispering that the camera should have been disabled.

Then Naomi released the surviving security footage.

The public watched Marcus promise that Khloe would never learn the truth.

Thorne Global’s stock collapsed before the market opened.

Three board members resigned.

Two hospitals suspended their contracts with the company.

Federal investigators entered Thorne House shortly after the police arrived.

Isabella was detained for the attack and for attempting to destroy evidence.

Dr. Mercer surrendered his phone, messages, and financial records.

Samuel gave investigators the archive drive.

Richard admitted his role in maintaining the hidden system access.

Marcus refused to answer questions until Khloe received medical care.

She was transferred to a small independent maternity hospital outside the city.

Her contractions eventually slowed.

The baby remained safe.

Marcus waited in the corridor under police supervision.

Khloe did not allow him inside.

Elaine entered instead.

Dust still marked the sleeves of her gala uniform.

Khloe reached for her hand.

“You made it.”

“So did you.”

“Where is Naomi?”

“Arguing with three attorneys and smiling more than she has in years.”

Khloe managed a faint smile.

“Richard?”

“Speaking with federal investigators.”

“Isabella?”

“In custody.”

“Victor?”

Elaine’s expression changed.

“He disappeared.”

Khloe looked toward the window.

“How?”

“He left the hospital before the evidence became public.”

“He knew the archive would expose him.”

“Yes.”

Elaine sat beside the bed.

“The police found his car near the river.”

“Was he inside?”

“No.”

Khloe closed her eyes.

Victor was not running without a plan.

He knew the hospital.

He knew the company.

He knew every weakness inside both families.

A nurse entered with a tablet.

“There is someone requesting a video call.”

“Who?”

“Marcus Thorne.”

Khloe almost refused.

Then she remembered the questions still unanswered.

“Connect it.”

Marcus appeared on the screen from a hospital conference room.

A police officer stood behind him.

He looked as though he had not slept.

“Are you safe?” he asked.

“The baby is safe.”

Relief moved across his face.

Khloe did not mistake it for redemption.

“Where is Victor?”

“I don’t know.”

“You worked with him.”

“I thought I did.”

“What does that mean?”

Marcus looked toward the officer before answering.

“Victor controlled my father.”

Khloe remained silent.

“He arranged the purchase of your father’s research division.”

“That does not excuse you.”

“I know.”

“He helped you target me.”

“Yes.”

“Why would he betray you now?”

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Because the trust contains more than Thorne Global shares.”

“What else?”

“I only discovered it last month.”

Khloe felt the familiar coldness return.

“What else, Marcus?”

“Your father patented the original security architecture.”

“So?”

“If the trust activates after the baby’s birth, you gain legal ownership of every system Thorne Global has ever built from that architecture.”

Elaine stared at the screen.

Khloe understood.

Hospitals.

Banks.

Government contracts.

Private databases.

The trust was not worth billions.

It controlled the foundation of an international technology empire.

Marcus continued.

“Victor does not want the shares.”

May you like

His expression became grave.

“He wants the access codes hidden inside the trust.”
