Chapter 16 - The Boardroom Reckoning

Three days later, Khloe entered the Thorne Global boardroom in a wheelchair.
Her doctor had ordered rest.
Khloe had agreed to remain seated.
She had not agreed to remain silent.
Twelve board members waited around the glass table.
Marcus sat at the far end with two federal investigators and his attorney.
His authority had been temporarily suspended.
Isabella’s chair remained empty.
Victor’s chair remained empty too.
Richard stood behind Khloe.
Elaine sat beside Naomi Grant near the observation wall.
The board chairman cleared his throat.
“Mrs. Thorne, given your condition, we can postpone.”
“No.”
Khloe placed a folder on the table.
“This meeting has already been postponed for twenty years.”
The chairman said nothing.
Khloe opened the trust documents.
“My father financed this company.”
Several board members shifted uncomfortably.
“He created the technology that made it valuable.”
She looked toward Marcus.
“Then the Thorne family rewrote the story.”
Marcus held her gaze.
He did not challenge her.
Khloe continued.
“The Legacy Trust gives me immediate voting control if company leadership acts against the health, safety, or legal rights of a direct Hale heir.”
The board’s attorney leaned forward.
“That clause requires documented misconduct.”
Elaine connected a laptop to the main screen.
The first video appeared.
Marcus and Isabella stood inside the hospital suite.
She promised Khloe would never learn the truth.
He said the trust would be controlled after the baby was born.
The second file showed altered medical records.
The third showed stolen hospital funds.
The fourth contained Victor’s voice admitting he intended to exploit the trust crisis.
The attorney sat back.
Khloe looked around the table.
“The clause is active.”
The board chairman glanced toward Marcus.
“Do you dispute the evidence?”
Marcus’s attorney whispered to him.
Marcus ignored the advice.
“No.”
The room became silent.
The chairman turned toward Khloe.
“What action are you requesting?”
“I am not requesting anything.”
Khloe slid a signed notice across the table.
“I am exercising controlling authority.”
She removed Victor Lang as deputy chairman.
She terminated Isabella’s consulting contract.
She suspended every executive connected to Crimson Meridian Holdings.
Then she reached the final page.
Marcus watched her.
Khloe’s hand remained steady.
“Marcus Thorne is removed as chief executive officer, effective immediately.”
One board member objected.
“The market will collapse.”
“The market is already collapsing because this company was built on fraud.”
“You cannot rebuild it overnight.”
“No.”
Khloe looked toward the city beyond the glass walls.
“But I can stop it from harming more people today.”
The vote was taken.
Eight approved.
Two opposed.
Two abstained.
Marcus was removed.
The board chairman turned toward him.
“Mr. Thorne, security will escort you from the building.”
Marcus stood.
Before leaving, he stopped beside Khloe.
“I did love you.”
She looked up at him.
“You loved what I allowed you to become.”
His face tightened.
“Is there any difference?”
“There should have been.”
Marcus nodded once.
Then he placed a small brass key on the table.
“This opens my father’s private vault.”
Khloe did not touch it.
“What is inside?”
“The reason Victor killed your father.”
Federal investigators moved closer.
Khloe stared at Marcus.
“Do you have proof?”
“I have something better.”
“What?”
“A confession.”
The boardroom doors opened.
Two officers waited outside.
May you like
Marcus looked back once.
“But if Victor learns you have it, he will come for you himself.”
