Chapter 19 - The Child Who Changed Everything

Khloe’s daughter was born six weeks early.

The delivery lasted nine hours.

Richard remained outside the room.

Elaine sat beside him.

Marcus arrived under federal supervision, but Khloe refused to let him enter.

He waited anyway.

At 7:16 in the morning, the sound of a newborn crying filled the delivery room.

Khloe closed her eyes.

Every fear she had carried for months released in a single breath.

The nurse placed the tiny baby against her chest.

“She is small,” Dr. Brooks said.

“But she is strong.”

Khloe touched the baby’s cheek.

“Her name is Hope.”

Richard heard the name from the hallway.

He covered his face.

Hope had been the name of Daniel Hale’s first security project.

The project he created to protect people.

The project Victor corrupted.

Now the name belonged to a child no one would use as a weapon again.

The doctors transferred Hope to the neonatal unit for observation.

Khloe was taken to a private recovery room.

Several hours later, Marcus stood outside the glass wall of the nursery.

A federal officer remained beside him.

He watched his daughter sleep beneath a soft white blanket.

Khloe approached in a wheelchair.

Marcus turned.

“She is beautiful.”

“Yes.”

“Is she healthy?”

“The doctors believe she will be.”

Relief crossed his face.

Khloe parked the wheelchair several feet away.

“The investigators said you confessed.”

“To everything.”

“The forged documents?”

“Yes.”

“The system access?”

“Yes.”

“The stolen funds?”

“Yes.”

“Your relationship with Isabella?”

Marcus looked down.

“Yes.”

Khloe studied the man she had once believed would protect her from the world.

Instead, he had brought the danger into their home.

“What happens now?” he asked.

“You face the consequences.”

“I meant with us.”

“There is no us.”

Marcus nodded slowly.

“I expected that.”

“I am filing for divorce.”

“I will not fight it.”

“You will have no control over the trust.”

“I know.”

“You will not use Hope to repair your reputation.”

His face tightened.

“I would never—”

“You already used her before she was born.”

Marcus accepted the truth.

Khloe continued.

“You may someday request supervised contact.”

Hope moved slightly inside the nursery.

“But that decision will be based on what protects her, not what comforts you.”

Marcus looked through the glass.

“I understand.”

Khloe turned her wheelchair.

“Do you?”

He did not answer.

Richard waited at the end of the corridor.

Khloe joined him.

Behind them, officers escorted Marcus away.

He did not ask her to forgive him.

For the first time, he seemed to understand that forgiveness was not something he could negotiate.

Richard walked beside Khloe toward Hope’s room.

“What will you do with Thorne Global?”

“Change the name.”

“To what?”

“Hale Systems.”

Richard smiled faintly.

“And the corrupted technology?”

“We expose every client who used it.”

“That may take years.”

May you like

Khloe looked through the nursery window at her daughter.

“Then we start today.”
