Chapter 3 - The Thorne Trust

Marcus demanded a lawyer before the video continued.
Richard refused to let him use Khloeâs room as a negotiation table.
Hospital security escorted Marcus to a private conference room.
Isabella was placed under observation in another suite after claiming she felt faint.
Khloe remained in bed while Richard stood beside the window.
The anger had left his face.
What replaced it was worse.
Guilt.
âYou know what trust they were talking about,â Khloe said.
Richard did not answer immediately.
âUncle Richard.â
He turned around.
âYour father created the Thorne Legacy Trust before you married Marcus.â
Khloe frowned.
âMy father died before I met Marcus.â
âYes.â
âThen why does it carry Marcusâs family name?â
âIt did not originally.â
Richard pulled a chair closer to the bed.
âWhen you married, your attorneys amended the public name of the trust.â
âI never approved that.â
âYou signed the amendment.â
Khloe stared at him.
âWhen?â
âThree days before your wedding.â
Memories returned in disconnected flashes.
A conference room.
A stack of documents.
Marcus sitting beside her.
His hand on her shoulder.
His attorney telling her the papers only protected both families from unnecessary taxes.
âWhat does the trust control?â
Richard looked down.
âForty-one percent of Thorne Global.â
Khloeâs heartbeat seemed to stop.
Marcus had always told her his family owned the company.
He had presented himself as the billionaire heir who rescued the failing business after his fatherâs death.
But forty-one percent was enough to control major board decisions.
âWhy would my father own that much of Marcusâs company?â
âBecause it was never truly Marcusâs company.â
Richardâs answer came softly.
âYour father financed Thorne Global when it was weeks from bankruptcy.â
Khloe stared at him.
âThe money was hidden through several investment groups.â
âHe wanted to protect you from people who would pursue you for your inheritance.â
âPeople like Marcus.â
Richard looked away.
That was answer enough.
Khloe placed both hands over her stomach.
âWhat happens when the baby is born?â
âThe shares transfer into a new family trust.â
âControlled by whom?â
âYou, as primary trustee.â
âAnd if I am declared mentally or medically incapable?â
Richardâs silence returned.
Khloe already knew the answer.
âMarcus.â
Richard nodded.
The entire plan became visible.
Marcus had not needed to kill her.
He only needed doctors to declare her unstable.
He needed medical authority over her decisions.
He needed temporary control while she was recovering from childbirth.
Once he controlled the trust, he could influence the board, move assets, and bury every trace of what he had done.
Khloe looked toward the door.
âIsabella attacked me because I told her to leave.â
âPossibly.â
âNo.â
Khloe remembered Isabellaâs words.
Carry his child.
Then disappear when you are no longer useful.
âShe believed the plan was already happening.â
Richardâs phone vibrated.
He checked the message.
His face changed.
âWhat is it?â
âThe documents Marcus wanted you to sign were filed with the hospital this morning.â
Khloe sat upright despite the pain.
âWhat documents?â
âA medical power of attorney.â
âI signed maternity consent forms.â
âThat is what you thought you signed.â
Richard handed her the phone.
A scanned document filled the screen.
Her signature appeared at the bottom.
Above it was a paragraph granting Marcus authority to make medical and psychiatric decisions if Khloe became confused, irrational, emotionally unstable, or temporarily incapable after childbirth.
Khloe felt cold.
âThat signature is mine.â
âI know.â
âBut I never saw this page.â
Richard enlarged the final paragraph.
A witness signature appeared beside hers.
Isabella Rossi.
Khloe looked at him.
âShe witnessed a document I never signed.â
Richard took the phone back.
âThat makes it fraud.â
A knock sounded at the door.
Elaine entered with a sealed red folder.
âI found this beneath the counter in the private suite.â
She placed it on Khloeâs bed.

Inside was a psychiatric evaluation already bearing Khloeâs name.
The date was tomorrow.
