Chapter 7 - The Offline Archive

The archive was located three floors beneath the hospital’s oldest wing.

The elevator did not reach it.

Richard led Khloe, Elaine, and two trusted security officers through a restricted service corridor.

Dr. Brooks had strongly objected to Khloe leaving her bed.

Khloe had promised to use a wheelchair and return within twenty minutes.

She had no intention of remaining passive while Marcus erased her life.

The underground room smelled of dust and cold metal.

Rows of inactive servers stood behind a reinforced glass wall.

Richard used the key to open the first security door.

Elaine studied the equipment.

“Why keep all of this offline?”

“Khloe’s father insisted on a physical backup.”

Richard entered a six-digit code.

“He never trusted a system that could rewrite itself.”

The inner door opened.

A technician named Samuel Reed waited inside.

Richard had called him from retirement.

Samuel had designed the first version of the hospital archive.

He looked at Khloe with visible concern.

“You look like your father.”

“I need to know who altered my medical documents.”

Samuel nodded.

“That will be easy.”

He connected a portable terminal to the first server.

“Deleting something from the active network does not remove the transaction history here.”

Lines of data appeared across the screen.

Samuel searched for the private suite recording.

The results loaded.

The file had been deleted at 10:42 p.m.

The user identification belonged to Isabella Rossi.

Elaine exhaled.

“Then we have her.”

Samuel shook his head.

“Not necessarily.”

He opened the access trail.

Isabella’s account had been activated from Marcus’s private office at Thorne Global.

Four hours before the gala.

Marcus had given her the authority.

Khloe stared at the screen.

“Show me the psychiatric evaluation.”

Samuel searched again.

The document had been created three weeks earlier.

The original author was Dr. Owen Mercer.

However, the text had been modified by another user.

Richard leaned closer.

“Who?”

Samuel opened the history.

Marcus Thorne.

Khloe felt no surprise this time.

Only clarity.

Marcus had designed the trap.

Isabella had carried it into the suite.

Dr. Mercer had signed the lie.

But the archive showed another name attached to the approval chain.

Deputy Chairman Victor Lang.

Richard’s oldest friend.

Victor had served beside Richard for twenty-six years.

He oversaw legal compliance, donor relations, and hospital privacy.

“He gave Isabella executive access,” Elaine said.

Richard looked stunned.

“I trusted him.”

Khloe almost laughed.

The sentence sounded too familiar.

Samuel continued searching.

“There are also financial transfers.”

He opened a series of transactions.

Millions of dollars had moved from hospital construction accounts into a company called Crimson Meridian Holdings.

“Who owns it?” Khloe asked.

Elaine searched the name on her phone.

“The registration is hidden.”

Samuel found the original creation file.

The owner’s identity appeared.

Isabella Rossi.

Richard stepped back.

“She stole from the hospital.”

“No,” Khloe said.

She examined the transfers.

“The authorization required two signatures.”

Marcus’s digital approval appeared first.

The second belonged to Victor Lang.

The scheme extended beyond the trust.

They had used the hospital for years.

Suddenly, the lights went out.

The servers continued humming on emergency power.

One of the guards reached for his radio.

It produced only static.

Samuel looked toward the locked door.

“That should not happen.”

A heavy metallic sound echoed from the corridor.

Someone had sealed the external security gate.

Khloe’s hands moved protectively over her stomach.

Elaine raised her phone.

“No signal.”

Richard turned toward Samuel.

“Is there another exit?”

Samuel looked at the dark ceiling.

“One.”

“Where?”

“Through the old medical tunnel.”

A red emergency light flashed on.

May you like

At the far end of the archive, something moved behind the glass.

Someone else was already underground.
