Chapter 1: The Night Everything Broke

Chapter 1: The Night Everything Broke
The applause from the charity gala still echoed through the upper floors of St. Victoria Medical Center.
Only an hour earlier, hundreds of cameras had flashed as Marcus Thorne and his wife, Khloe, stood hand in hand beneath crystal chandeliers, smiling for donors who had contributed millions to children's hospitals across the country.
To the public, they were the perfect couple.
The billionaire CEO.
The graceful philanthropist.
The soon-to-be parents of the next generation of the Thorne family.
No one knew how fragile that picture had become.
Khloe pressed one hand against her stomach as she leaned against the marble counter inside the private hospital suite.
Seven months pregnant, she had smiled through speeches, interviews, and endless congratulations until exhaustion settled into every muscle in her body.
The gala downstairs had been held inside the hospital's new pediatric wing, a project she had personally helped fund.
She had wanted to leave an hour ago.
Marcus had insisted on staying to thank every donor personally.
"I'll only be gone for ten minutes," he had promised before stepping back into the ballroom.
Ten minutes had turned into nearly forty.
Then the door opened.
Isabella Rossi entered without knocking.
She closed the door quietly behind her.
The click of the lock echoed through the silent suite.
Khloe looked up.
"I wasn't expecting company."
Isabella smiled.
Neither warm nor friendly.
Only calculated.
"I know."
She slowly walked farther into the room, her crimson evening gown flowing across the polished marble floor.
For weeks, tabloids had speculated about Isabella.
She had recently become vice president of international acquisitions at Thorne Global.
She attended every executive dinner.
Every investor conference.
Every charity event.
Always standing just a little too close to Marcus.
Always smiling whenever cameras appeared.
Marcus had dismissed every rumor.
"People invent stories about successful men every day."
Khloe had wanted to believe him.
Tonight, she wasn't so sure.
"You look tired," Isabella said softly.
"I am."
"You should rest."
"I plan to."
"For a very long time."
Khloe frowned.
"What does that mean?"
Instead of answering, Isabella admired the nursery gift baskets stacked beside the window.
"So many presents."
"So much excitement."
"So much attention."
She turned back.
"Everyone already loves your baby."
Khloe instinctively rested both hands across her stomach.
"What do you want?"
"I wanted to see the woman who changed everything."
"I don't understand."
"Oh..."
Isabella laughed quietly.
"I think you understand perfectly."
For months, rumors had circulated through the executive offices.
Certain board members believed Marcus needed a stronger political marriage.
Someone connected to old-money European investors.
Someone with influence across international markets.
Someone exactly like Isabella.
Khloe had dismissed the whispers.
Marcus loved her.
Didn't he?
"You married him before he became the richest man in New York," Isabella continued.
"You stood beside him when no one believed in him."
Khloe nodded cautiously.
"That's true."
"But now..."
Isabella stepped closer.
"...you're no longer useful."
The words landed harder than Khloe expected.
"I think you should leave."
"I will."
Isabella smiled again.
"After we finish talking."
Downstairs...
Marcus stood near the stage speaking with several investors.
His phone vibrated.
One message.
From Khloe.
Come upstairs when you're free.
No explanation.
No emoji.
Nothing else.
He smiled.
She was probably exhausted.
He excused himself from the conversation.
"I'll be back in a few minutes."
As he crossed the ballroom, Elaine Parker hurried toward him.
"Mr. Thorne."
"What is it?"
"I can't find Ms. Rossi."
Marcus frowned.
"So?"
"She was asking where Mrs. Thorne had gone."
Something about that sentence didn't feel right.
He looked toward the elevators.
Then pressed the button.
Back upstairs...
Khloe stepped toward the door.
"I'm ending this conversation."
Before she reached the handle, Isabella blocked her path.
"I spent three years earning my place inside your husband's company."
Khloe remained calm.
"Congratulations."
"I wasn't finished."
"I don't care."
"You should."
Her voice became colder.
"Because your future depends on what happens next."
Khloe stared.
"I don't threaten people."
"I'm not threatening you."
"What are you doing?"
"I'm giving you a choice."
"A choice?"
"Leave Marcus."
Khloe blinked.
"I'm sorry?"
"Walk away quietly."
"Take a generous settlement."
"Disappear."
Khloe almost laughed.
"You've lost your mind."
"I've already planned everything."
"No."
"You planned a fantasy."
The elevator climbed toward the executive floor.
Marcus checked his watch.
Nine thirty-eight.
His instincts told him something was wrong.
Elaine noticed his expression.
"Should I call security?"
Marcus hesitated.
"I hope we're both overreacting."
The elevator doors opened.
They walked quickly toward the private suite.
The hallway seemed strangely empty.
Too quiet.
Then—
A sharp crash echoed from behind the closed door.
Glass shattering.
Followed by a cry.
Marcus broke into a run.
Inside the suite...
Khloe reached for the door.
Isabella grabbed her arm.
"Let go."
"No."
Khloe pulled free.
A crystal champagne flute slipped from the nearby table.
It struck the marble floor.
Shattering into dozens of glittering pieces.
The sound froze both women for half a heartbeat.
Then everything happened at once.
Khloe lost her balance.
She stumbled backward into the edge of the marble table.
Pain shot through her back as she instinctively curled forward to protect her unborn child.
Before she could regain her footing, Isabella moved toward her again.
The confrontation spiraled completely out of control.
Outside...
Marcus reached the suite.
He threw the door open.
The scene inside stole every word from his mouth.
Khloe was on the floor, breathing hard, clutching her stomach.
Crystal fragments sparkled across the marble.
Furniture had shifted from the struggle.
Isabella stood several feet away.
For one impossible second...
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Then Isabella burst into tears.
"Marcus!"
She pointed toward Khloe with trembling hands.
"She attacked me!"
Marcus looked from Isabella...
to his wife...
to the broken room.
Nothing made sense.
Khloe slowly lifted her eyes.
Pain mixed with disbelief.
She didn't plead.
She didn't argue.
She only whispered four words.
"Please... believe me."
Marcus's heartbeat thundered in his ears.
Before he could answer—
Several nurses rushed into the room.
Behind them came hospital security.
Leading them was Chief of Security Daniel Carter.
Khloe's uncle.
His experienced eyes swept across the room once.
Then stopped on the small black dome camera mounted above the entrance.
Its tiny recording light was still blinking.
Daniel didn't say a word.
But deep inside...
He already knew one thing.
The camera had seen everything.
And if someone believed the truth could be buried tonight...
May you like
They had made the biggest mistake of their lives.
