Chapter 3: The Forgotten Backup

Chapter 3: The Forgotten Backup

The city skyline was beginning to fade into the gray light of dawn when Daniel Carter stepped into the hospital's Security Operations Center.

Unlike the elegant marble corridors upstairs, the security center was plain and windowless. Rows of monitors covered one wall, displaying hundreds of live camera feeds from every hallway, entrance, operating room corridor, and parking garage inside St. Victoria Medical Center.

Normally, the room buzzed with routine reports.

This morning, it was silent.

Everyone knew something extraordinary had happened.

Daniel removed his jacket and placed it over the back of a chair.

"No interruptions."

One of the technicians nodded.

"Yes, Chief."

The hospital's IT director, Samuel Briggs, was already waiting beside a rack of servers.

"I've checked the primary recording system three times."

"And?"

Samuel sighed.

"The file was deliberately erased."

Daniel wasn't surprised.

"Can you recover it?"

Samuel shook his head.

"Not from the main server."

He hesitated.

"But..."

Daniel looked up.

"What?"

"There may be another copy."

Marcus arrived twenty minutes later.

He hadn't slept.

His tuxedo had been replaced by a simple navy suit, but exhaustion was written across his face.

"Any news?"

Daniel motioned him inside.

Samuel pointed toward a digital blueprint of the hospital network.

"When this hospital expanded five years ago, we installed a disaster-recovery system."

Marcus frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It creates an encrypted backup every sixty seconds."

Marcus leaned closer.

"So the cameras don't only record once?"

Samuel nodded.

"The primary server records continuously."

"The emergency archive copies everything automatically."

Daniel crossed his arms.

"Most employees don't even know it exists."

Marcus felt hope rise for the first time since the nightmare began.

"So if someone erased the main recording..."

Samuel finished the sentence.

"They may have forgotten about the emergency archive."

The room grew quiet.

Samuel began typing rapidly.

Lines of encrypted code scrolled across three monitors.

The progress bar crawled forward.

Five percent.

Twelve.

Twenty-one.

Then—

An error message flashed.

ACCESS DENIED

Samuel frowned.

"That's impossible."

He tried again.

The same warning appeared.

Daniel's expression darkened.

"Someone locked the archive."

Marcus stared at the screen.

"Can you break through it?"

Samuel hesitated.

"I can."

"But whoever encrypted it knew exactly what they were doing."

"How long?"

"Several hours."

Marcus looked at his watch.

"We don't have several hours."

News would spread.

Rumors would grow.

Investors would panic.

Whoever had attacked Khloe was already buying time.

Meanwhile...

Three floors above...

Khloe slowly opened her eyes.

Morning sunlight filtered through the curtains of the maternity recovery suite.

Machines beeped steadily beside her bed.

The first thing she did was place both hands gently across her stomach.

A small kick answered.

Tears filled her eyes.

"Thank you..."

Dr. Amelia Reynolds entered with a warm smile.

"Good morning."

"How's my baby?"

"The heartbeat is strong."

Khloe closed her eyes in relief.

"But you and the baby need complete rest."

Khloe nodded.

Then asked the question that mattered most.

"Has Marcus been here?"

The doctor smiled.

"He hasn't left the hospital."

Outside the room...

Marcus stood staring through the observation window.

He had wanted to walk inside a dozen times.

Yet every time he reached for the handle...

He stopped.

Guilt held him back.

Daniel walked over quietly.

"She asked about you."

Marcus lowered his head.

"I should have believed her immediately."

Daniel didn't answer.

Because Marcus already knew the truth.

Inside another wing of the hospital...

Isabella Rossi entered the executive lounge wearing oversized sunglasses despite being indoors.

She ordered coffee.

Her hands remained perfectly steady.

But her thoughts were racing.

A man in an expensive gray suit approached her table.

He never said her name.

He simply sat down.

"Has the footage been recovered?"

"I don't think so."

"You don't think?"

She lowered her voice.

"The primary recording is gone."

"The archive?"

"I don't know."

The man looked toward the hospital entrance.

"Find out."

"If another recording exists..."

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't need to.

Back in Security Operations...

Samuel suddenly straightened.

"I found something."

Everyone turned.

"The archive wasn't destroyed."

Marcus stepped closer.

"What is it?"

"It was copied."

Daniel frowned.

"Copied where?"

Samuel enlarged a system log.

"There was a remote download."

Marcus's heartbeat quickened.

"When?"

Samuel pointed at the timestamp.

"Nine minutes after the confrontation."

Silence filled the room.

Someone hadn't merely erased evidence.

Someone had stolen it.

Daniel immediately issued orders.

"Freeze every employee login."

"Check every administrator account."

"Review every network connection from last night."

The technicians scattered.

Marcus stared at the monitor.

"If someone downloaded it..."

"They still have the recording."

Daniel nodded.

"And eventually..."

"They'll have to use it."

Elsewhere...

Elaine Parker sat alone inside her office.

She hadn't stopped replaying the night in her mind.

One detail refused to leave her.

When Marcus entered...

Isabella hadn't been kneeling.

She hadn't been helping Khloe.

She had been standing over her.

Elaine opened her phone.

She enlarged a photograph taken during the charity gala.

Isabella smiled confidently beside Marcus.

On her right wrist...

A diamond bracelet glittered beneath the ballroom lights.

Elaine frowned.

She opened another photograph taken after the incident.

The bracelet was gone.

She searched through every picture from the evening.

One.

Two.

Five.

Ten.

Nothing.

The bracelet had disappeared sometime before the confrontation.

"Where did it go?"

She whispered to herself.

An hour later...

A maintenance worker cleaning the executive suite discovered something wedged beneath the marble cabinet.

"Chief Carter?"

Daniel arrived minutes later.

The worker carefully pointed toward the narrow gap.

"I almost vacuumed it up."

Daniel crouched.

Using latex gloves, he reached inside.

His fingers closed around something cold.

He slowly pulled it into the light.

A diamond bracelet.

One clasp had snapped open.

Tiny scratches covered the surface.

Marcus immediately recognized it.

"That's Isabella's."

Daniel turned it over.

Something red clung to the broken clasp.

Not much.

Just enough.

He handed it carefully to a forensic technician.

"Send it to the lab."

Marcus looked puzzled.

"A bracelet proves nothing."

Daniel nodded.

"No."

"But DNA might."

Across town...

Inside a luxury penthouse overlooking Manhattan...

The unidentified man received a secure email.

One attachment.

One sentence.

The bracelet wasn't recovered.

He smiled.

"Excellent."

Then his assistant entered.

"Sir..."

"We've got a problem."

"What?"

"The hospital just requested emergency forensic testing."

The man's smile disappeared.

"What evidence?"

"We don't know."

For the first time...

Even the man operating from the shadows realized the plan might be slipping beyond his control.

Back at the hospital...

Samuel suddenly shouted from the server room.

"I found the destination!"

Everyone rushed over.

"The stolen archive wasn't sent outside the hospital."

Marcus blinked.

"What?"

Samuel enlarged another screen.

"It never left the building."

Daniel stared at the blinking location marker.

The copied surveillance footage...

Was still somewhere inside St. Victoria Medical Center.

Whoever had stolen it...

Had never escaped.

Which meant one chilling possibility remained.

The person hiding the truth...

Was still walking the same halls as Khloe.

Still watching.

Still waiting.

May you like

And they might already know that Daniel Carter was closing in.
