Chapter 13: The Final Witness

Chapter 13: The Final Witness
Judge William Mercer's mansion was already surrounded by police lights when Daniel Carter's SUV arrived.
Yellow crime-scene tape fluttered in the cold night wind.
Marcus stepped out first.
The massive stone house stood in complete silence.
No reporters had arrived yet.
Whoever had called in the emergency had done so anonymously.
Rebecca Lawson met them at the front entrance.
"They're inside."
Daniel studied her face.
"You've already seen him."
Rebecca nodded.
"Yes."
"And?"
She answered quietly.
"He wasn't killed because of who he was."
"He was killed because of what he knew."
Inside the library...
The room appeared almost untouched.
Books lined the walls.
A fireplace still burned softly.
A crystal glass sat on a side table beside an unfinished chess game.
Detective Owen Pierce approached.
"There are almost no signs of forced entry."
Daniel looked around.
"So Mercer knew his visitor."
"That's our conclusion."
Marcus noticed something unusual.
One white chess piece had fallen onto the floor.
The king.
Daniel crouched beside it.
"There was a struggle."
Owen shook his head.
"Not much of one."
"It happened very quickly."
The medical examiner stood nearby.
"Time of death?"
Daniel asked.
"Approximately ninety minutes ago."
Rebecca frowned.
"That's exactly when we found the videotape."
Daniel slowly stood.
"So Adrian already knew we had opened the vault."
Marcus looked toward him.
"How?"
Nobody answered.
Because they were all thinking the same thing.
Someone was still feeding Adrian information.
Back at Thorne Global Headquarters...
Samuel Briggs refused to leave his workstation.
He replayed security logs from the past seventy-two hours.
Every employee.
Every visitor.
Every login.
Thousands of entries.
Then...
One access record appeared.
Vault 4A.
Viewed.
Not opened.
Six days earlier.
Samuel frowned.
"Who searched for it?"
He enlarged the authorization code.
The request had come from inside Thorne Global.
Using executive-level credentials.
He immediately called Daniel.
"I found something."
Daniel stepped into the hallway.
"What is it?"
"Someone inside the company searched Edward Thorne's private vault six days ago."
Marcus overheard.
"Who?"
Samuel hesitated.
"The login belongs to..."
"...Chief Legal Officer Victoria Hale."
Marcus stared in disbelief.
"Victoria?"
Rebecca looked equally shocked.
"She's worked for the company almost twenty years."
Daniel remained calm.
"Bring her in."
An hour later...
Victoria Hale sat inside an FBI interview room.
She looked tired.
Not frightened.
Rebecca placed the login records on the table.
"Can you explain this?"
Victoria adjusted her glasses.
"I searched for the vault."
Marcus asked sharply,
"Why?"
Victoria looked directly at him.
"Because your father asked me to."
Silence.
Marcus frowned.
"My father died eight years ago."
Victoria nodded.
"He asked me twenty-three years ago."
Everyone froze.
Victoria reached into her handbag.
"I've been waiting for this day."
She removed a sealed envelope.
The paper had yellowed with age.
Across the front...
Edward Thorne's handwriting appeared once again.
To Victoria.
Marcus could hardly breathe.
Victoria handed it to him.
"He told me never to open it."
"Only to give it to you..."
"...when Adrian Blackwood returned."
Daniel slowly looked up.
"He knew Adrian would come back."
Victoria nodded.
"He was certain of it."
Marcus carefully unfolded the letter.
Edward had written only one paragraph.
Marcus,
If Adrian has returned, then he has finally gathered enough proof to expose the people who destroyed all of us.
Listen before you judge him.
He is not the enemy you were raised to believe.
Marcus read the last sentence twice.
Then looked at Daniel.
"My father trusted Adrian."
Daniel nodded.
"In the end..."
"Yes."
Across the city...
Adrian stood alone inside an old church.
The building had been abandoned for years.
Moonlight filtered through broken stained-glass windows.
Leonard entered quietly.
"Judge Mercer is dead."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"I know."
"You didn't order it."
"No."
Leonard frowned.
"Then who did?"
Adrian looked toward the altar.
"The same person who poisoned Edward."
"The same person who framed me."
"The same person who tried to kill Khloe."
Leonard whispered,
"So they're still alive."
Adrian nodded.
"And they're losing control."
Back at the mansion...
Crime-scene investigators discovered a hidden compartment beneath Mercer's desk.
Inside...
A small digital recorder.
Rebecca smiled for the first time all night.
"He left us something."
The recorder was carefully connected to forensic equipment.
Everyone gathered around.
Static crackled through the speaker.
Then Judge Mercer's voice emerged.
"If you're hearing this..."
"...I am probably dead."
Marcus felt a knot tighten in his stomach.
Mercer continued.
"I stayed silent for twenty years."
"I accepted money."
"I signed false court documents."
"I helped destroy Adrian Blackwood."
Rebecca quietly pressed Record.
Every word mattered.
Mercer's breathing became heavier.
"But I wasn't the mastermind."
Daniel stepped closer.
"Come on..."
Mercer's voice weakened.
"The orders came from..."
Suddenly...
The recording stopped.
Not because it had been damaged.
Because the battery had died.
Samuel immediately checked the device.
"No."
His face tightened.
"The battery was full."
Rebecca frowned.
"What happened?"
Samuel held up the recorder.
"It has a remote signal receiver."
Daniel understood instantly.
"Someone disabled it."
Before anyone could speak...
Every light inside the mansion went dark.
The emergency generator failed.
Complete silence.
Then...
One gunshot echoed somewhere upstairs.
Federal agents rushed through the hallways.
Flashlights cut through the darkness.
Marcus, Daniel, and Rebecca reached the second floor.
An open window overlooked the gardens.
Cold air rushed into the room.
On the floor lay one injured FBI agent, conscious but shaken.
"The shooter?" Daniel asked.
The agent pointed toward the trees.
"Escaped."
Daniel looked outside.
Nothing.
Only darkness.
Then Marcus noticed something glinting on the windowsill.
A silver cufflink.
Engraved with a single letter.
E.
Rebecca picked it up carefully.
"Not Adrian."
Daniel nodded.
"No."
"His ring carries an 'A.'"
Marcus looked at the engraved cufflink.
"So who's 'E'?"
Miles away...
Inside a secluded estate hidden in the Catskill Mountains...
A man removed the matching cufflink from his sleeve.
His face remained hidden in shadow.
Across the room, dozens of surveillance monitors displayed live feeds.
Marcus.
Daniel.
Rebecca.
Khloe.
Even Adrian.
The mysterious man had been watching all of them.
For years.
He quietly poured himself a glass of whiskey.
Then spoke to someone standing behind him.
"It's time."
A woman's voice answered.
"What about Adrian?"
The man smiled faintly.
"He's served his purpose."
"And Marcus?"
"He'll lead us..."
"...to the Founder File."
The woman nodded.
"And after that?"
The mysterious man looked at the wall of surveillance screens.
May you like
"Erase every last witness."
