Chapter 5: The Hidden Drive

Chapter 5: The Hidden Drive

The underground parking garage remained sealed.

Security officers searched every vehicle, every storage room, every maintenance closet, and every trash container.

Nothing.

The mysterious hard drive had vanished.

Daniel Carter stood beside the security command vehicle, studying a digital map of the garage.

He wasn't frustrated.

He was thinking.

"Something doesn't fit."

Marcus looked at him.

"What?"

"The suspect never planned to escape."

Marcus frowned.

"He ran."

"He wanted us to believe he was running."

Daniel pointed toward the service elevator.

"His route crossed every surveillance blind spot in the garage."

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

"He knew the building."

Daniel nodded.

"Better than most employees."

Inside Security Operations...

Samuel Briggs replayed every camera angle from the parking garage.

The disguised janitor appeared on six different cameras.

Then suddenly...

He disappeared for exactly twelve seconds.

Only twelve.

When the video resumed, he was no longer carrying the same cleaning cart.

Samuel immediately froze the frame.

"Zoom in."

The image sharpened.

The cart now had a different serial number.

Daniel stared at the screen.

"He switched carts."

Marcus leaned closer.

"Where?"

Samuel highlighted a loading dock hidden behind concrete columns.

"No camera covers that corner."

Daniel smiled for the first time that day.

"So the hard drive never disappeared."

Marcus looked confused.

"It was transferred."

Meanwhile...

Khloe rested quietly in her hospital room.

Morning sunlight warmed the white curtains as Dr. Amelia Reynolds completed another examination.

"The baby's heartbeat is excellent."

Khloe smiled softly.

"When can I go home?"

The doctor shook her head.

"Not yet."

"You've experienced significant emotional trauma."

"We're keeping you under observation for at least another forty-eight hours."

Khloe nodded.

She understood.

But hospitals suddenly felt less safe than ever.

A gentle knock interrupted them.

Marcus stepped inside.

For several seconds...

Neither spoke.

Finally...

"I'm sorry."

Khloe looked at him.

"I should have believed you immediately."

Silence lingered.

Marcus walked closer.

"I've replayed that moment a hundred times."

"I saw you on the floor."

"I saw Isabella standing over you."

"But before I could think..."

"...she spoke first."

Khloe's eyes filled with tears.

"I wasn't asking you to choose sides."

"I only wanted you to know me."

Marcus lowered his head.

"I do."

"And I failed you."

For the first time since the attack...

Khloe reached for his hand.

"I need my husband."

Marcus gently held it.

"And you have him."

Across Manhattan...

Isabella Rossi sat inside the executive office she had barely occupied for three months.

Television coverage played silently on the wall.

THORNE FAMILY REMAINS SILENT AFTER HOSPITAL INCIDENT

She muted the screen.

Her phone rang.

The same private number.

"Report."

"The hospital found my bracelet."

A pause.

"Anything else?"

"They're searching the parking garage."

The man's voice hardened.

"Did they find the drive?"

"I don't know."

"You'd better hope they didn't."

The line went dead.

For the first time...

Isabella's hands trembled.

At Thorne Global Headquarters...

An emergency board meeting filled the executive conference room.

Twelve directors.

Three company attorneys.

Two investment advisors.

Every chair was occupied except one.

Marcus's.

Chairman Harold Bennett spoke firmly.

"Our stock has dropped nine percent since the market opened."

Director Cynthia Wallace responded.

"Because the company refuses to make a statement."

Another executive interrupted.

"If Marcus doesn't appear today..."

"...we'll lose investor confidence."

The debate intensified.

Then the conference room doors opened.

Marcus walked in.

Every conversation stopped.

He looked exhausted.

But determined.

"I'll make one thing clear."

The room became silent.

"My wife comes before this company."

Several directors exchanged nervous glances.

Marcus continued.

"And anyone attempting to exploit what happened to her..."

"...will answer directly to me."

No one challenged him.

Back at the hospital...

Samuel suddenly called Daniel.

"I found the second cleaning cart."

Minutes later, they stood inside a maintenance storage room.

Two identical carts stood side by side.

One belonged to the hospital.

The other...

Didn't.

Daniel examined the wheels.

Fresh tire marks.

Recently cleaned.

He opened every compartment.

Buckets.

Towels.

Cleaning supplies.

Nothing.

Then he tapped one metal shelf.

The sound was different.

"Hollow."

Using a screwdriver, he removed the panel.

Inside...

An empty compartment.

Perfectly shaped for a portable hard drive.

Marcus smiled.

"So we were right."

Daniel nodded.

"The evidence was hidden here."

"But someone collected it."

Samuel checked employee access logs.

"Only three people entered this storage room after midnight."

Daniel studied the list.

A maintenance supervisor.

A housekeeping manager.

And...

Victor Hayes.

Marcus frowned.

"Who's Victor Hayes?"

Samuel answered.

"He works in hospital IT."

Daniel looked up sharply.

"The same department with access to our surveillance servers."

Meanwhile...

Victor Hayes hurried through Grand Central Terminal carrying a black laptop bag.

His breathing remained calm.

His appearance ordinary.

Just another commuter.

Inside the bag...

Wrapped inside a folded newspaper...

Was the encrypted hard drive.

He checked his watch.

11:15 a.m.

His train departed in seven minutes.

His phone buzzed.

One message.

Deliver immediately. No mistakes.

Victor looked around.

No one appeared to be following him.

He boarded the train.

The doors began closing.

At the last second...

A woman wearing business attire stepped inside the same carriage.

Victor barely noticed her.

She sat three rows behind him.

Opened a newspaper.

And quietly touched the tiny microphone hidden beneath her collar.

"Target acquired."

She wasn't a commuter.

She was an investigator hired by Daniel Carter only an hour earlier.

Back at the hospital...

Daniel received the message through his encrypted earpiece.

"Our surveillance team has visual confirmation."

Marcus looked surprised.

"You already anticipated he'd leave."

Daniel smiled slightly.

"I stopped chasing."

"I started thinking."

Marcus nodded.

"The drive is moving."

"Exactly."

"But we don't arrest him yet."

Marcus frowned.

"Why not?"

"Because Victor isn't the mastermind."

Daniel's eyes settled on the city map displayed on the monitor.

"If we follow him..."

"He'll lead us to whoever ordered all of this."

Forty minutes later...

The train arrived in Connecticut.

Victor stepped onto the platform.

He walked calmly toward a quiet marina overlooking Long Island Sound.

A sleek black yacht waited at the dock.

One man stood aboard wearing sunglasses and a navy overcoat.

Victor climbed aboard.

He removed the hard drive from his bag.

"You wanted this."

The man reached for it.

Before their hands touched—

A voice echoed across the dock.

"Federal agents!"

"Don't move!"

Black SUVs surrounded the marina from every direction.

Agents rushed toward the yacht.

Victor froze.

The mysterious man looked up only once.

Then calmly smiled.

Without hesitation...

He dropped the hard drive into the ocean.

It disappeared beneath the dark water.

Marcus, watching the live drone feed from Daniel's command center, felt his heart sink.

Months of evidence...

Gone in seconds.

But Daniel never looked worried.

Instead...

He quietly picked up his phone and called the dive team waiting just beyond the harbor.

"Operation Two begins now."

Marcus looked at him in disbelief.

"You expected this?"

Daniel smiled.

"I've learned something over the years."

"When guilty people think they're destroying the truth..."

"They usually destroy the copy."

Marcus stared.

"What do you mean?"

Daniel's smile widened.

"The original surveillance archive..."

"...never left the hospital."

The room fell silent.

Somewhere inside St. Victoria Medical Center...

Hidden where no one had thought to look...

The real recording still existed.

And now...

May you like

Daniel knew exactly where to find it.
