Chapter 14: The Founder File

Chapter 14: The Founder File

The silver cufflink lay sealed inside an evidence bag.

One engraved letter.

E.

It was the first tangible clue pointing to someone beyond Adrian Blackwood.

Daniel Carter studied it beneath the fluorescent lights of the FBI command center.

Rebecca Lawson stood beside him.

"We've spent weeks chasing Adrian."

Daniel nodded.

"And all this time..."

"...someone else has been cleaning up behind him."

Marcus looked at the evidence board.

Anthony Rossi.

Judge Mercer.

Richard Monroe.

Adrian Blackwood.

Now...

A new name.

Only one letter.

E.

Samuel Briggs entered carrying a laptop.

"I've finished the database search."

Daniel looked up.

"Tell me you found something."

Samuel projected a list onto the wall.

Executives.

Investors.

Board members.

Former government officials.

Hundreds of people with names beginning with the letter E.

Marcus sighed.

"That doesn't help."

Samuel smiled faintly.

"It does when you narrow the list."

He enlarged another screen.

"The cufflink was custom-made."

"Only twelve identical pairs were manufactured."

Rebecca leaned forward.

"Who bought them?"

Samuel answered quietly.

"One man."

Everyone waited.

"Edward Ellington."

Silence settled over the room.

Marcus frowned.

"I've never heard that name."

Daniel had.

His expression darkened.

"You wouldn't."

"He disappeared almost fifteen years ago."

Rebecca looked surprised.

"The federal prosecutor?"

Daniel nodded.

"The same prosecutor who originally investigated Adrian Blackwood."

Marcus slowly turned toward him.

"Another man who disappeared."

Daniel folded his arms.

"Not disappeared."

"He resigned overnight."

"No explanation."

"No interviews."

"No public appearances."

"He simply vanished."

Across the city...

Adrian Blackwood sat alone in a quiet jazz club that had not yet opened for the evening.

The owner locked the front door.

"No customers until seven."

Adrian smiled.

"I'm not here for the music."

The owner nodded respectfully.

A hidden elevator descended beneath the club.

Deep underground.

A secure operations room came alive.

Walls of computer monitors.

Maps.

Financial records.

Photographs.

Leonard entered.

"They've identified Edward Ellington."

Adrian looked at the screen.

"So Daniel is finally asking the right questions."

Leonard hesitated.

"Should we warn him?"

Adrian slowly shook his head.

"No."

"He has to find Ellington himself."

Meanwhile...

Khloe rested inside the Thorne penthouse under constant medical supervision.

Her doctor insisted she avoid stress.

She tried.

But every news broadcast seemed connected to her family.

Marcus arrived carrying dinner.

He smiled.

"You actually ate lunch today."

Khloe laughed softly.

"The nurse watched me."

Marcus kissed her forehead.

"The baby?"

She guided his hand to her stomach.

A tiny kick answered him.

Marcus smiled for the first time in days.

"Still reminding us who's in charge."

Khloe nodded.

"Our child deserves better than secrets."

Marcus became quiet.

"I promise."

"No more lies."

That evening...

Daniel and Rebecca reopened Edward Thorne's private document case.

Samuel carefully examined every page under ultraviolet light.

Most contained ordinary financial notes.

Then...

One blank page began revealing hidden writing.

Invisible ink.

Letters slowly appeared.

Marcus stared.

"My father..."

Rebecca read aloud.

Founder File relocated.

Only Edward Ellington knows the new location.

The room fell silent.

Daniel whispered,

"So Ellington didn't disappear."

"He went into hiding."

Rebecca immediately contacted the federal witness protection office.

No records.

The Department of Justice.

Nothing.

The FBI archives.

Still nothing.

It was as if Edward Ellington had never existed.

Samuel suddenly frowned.

"Wait."

He enlarged one forgotten database.

Retired federal pension records.

One monthly payment remained active.

Recipient:

E. Ellington.

Current mailing address:

A small town in northern Vermont.

Marcus immediately stood.

"We leave tonight."

High in the Green Mountains of Vermont...

Snow covered a quiet lakeside cabin.

An elderly man fed birds outside his porch.

His beard had turned completely white.

His movements were slow.

Peaceful.

Then...

He noticed tire tracks leading toward his mailbox.

Someone had been there.

Inside the mailbox rested a single envelope.

No stamp.

No address.

Only one sentence.

They've found you.

Edward Ellington closed his eyes.

"So..."

"It finally begins."

Hours later...

Marcus, Daniel, Rebecca, and two FBI agents arrived at the cabin.

Smoke rose from the chimney.

The lights were on.

Daniel signaled everyone to spread out.

He knocked gently.

No answer.

He knocked again.

Still silence.

Marcus slowly pushed the door open.

The cabin was warm.

Dinner sat untouched on the table.

A rocking chair moved gently.

But Edward Ellington was gone.

On the dining table...

One object remained.

A thick brown file.

Across the cover...

Edward's handwriting.

THE FOUNDER FILE

Marcus's heart raced.

"We found it."

Rebecca carefully opened the file.

Inside were original investigation reports.

Bank transfers.

Court transcripts.

Secret correspondence.

And one sealed envelope marked:

Open Last.

Daniel reviewed the first documents.

Every page pointed toward the same conclusion.

Anthony Rossi had orchestrated the financial fraud.

Judge Mercer had concealed evidence.

Several executives had accepted bribes.

But something still didn't fit.

Rebecca noticed it too.

"Where's Adrian?"

His name appeared nowhere.

Marcus frowned.

"He spent twenty years trying to recover this."

"So why isn't he in it?"

Daniel slowly turned another page.

There...

Tucked between two reports...

Was a faded photograph.

Four founders stood together.

Edward Thorne.

Arthur Sinclair.

Anthony Rossi.

Adrian Blackwood.

Behind them...

Barely visible in the background...

A fifth man.

Half hidden by shadow.

Marcus looked closer.

"Who's that?"

Daniel checked the back of the photograph.

Only one word had been written.

Observer.

Before anyone could discuss it...

An old battery-powered radio sitting on the kitchen counter suddenly switched on by itself.

Static crackled through the cabin.

Then...

A familiar voice echoed across the room.

"Good evening, Daniel."

Everyone froze.

It was Adrian Blackwood.

"I knew you'd find the Founder File."

Marcus stepped toward the radio.

"What do you want?"

Adrian's recorded voice remained calm.

"Not what."

"Who."

Silence.

"You've been asking the wrong question."

"The mastermind isn't Anthony Rossi."

"He never was."

Marcus looked at Daniel.

Rebecca stopped writing.

Adrian continued.

"Anthony was greedy."

"Mercer was corrupt."

"I was framed."

"But none of us..."

"...were in charge."

The recording paused.

Then Adrian spoke one final sentence.

"If you want the truth..."

"...find the Observer."

The radio clicked off.

Complete silence returned to the cabin.

Daniel slowly picked up the faded photograph.

His eyes focused on the blurred figure standing behind the four founders.

A man everyone had ignored for twenty-five years.

A man with no name.

Only a title.

The Observer.

Outside...

Fresh footprints appeared in the snow.

Someone had been standing just beyond the cabin window...

Listening to every word.

By the time Daniel rushed outside...

The forest was empty.

Only a single footprint remained.

Pressed deep into the snow.

And beside it...

Another silver cufflink engraved with the letter:

May you like

E.
