Chapter 7: Shadows from the Past

Chapter 7: Shadows from the Past

The warning stayed on every monitor for less than ten seconds.

But it was long enough.

Every technician in the Security Operations Center stared at the black screen.

STOP DIGGING.

NEXT TIME... NO ONE SURVIVES.

Then the message vanished.

Samuel Briggs immediately disconnected the hospital's internal network.

"Pull every external connection!"

Technicians rushed into action.

Within seconds, the hospital's servers were isolated from the outside world.

Daniel Carter folded his arms.

"They're nervous."

Marcus looked at him.

"They just threatened my family."

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

"Guilty people don't threaten investigators when they're winning."

An hour later...

The surveillance footage had been copied onto encrypted government-grade storage devices.

One copy remained locked inside the hospital vault.

Another was delivered to detectives from the Manhattan District Attorney's Office.

The third stayed in Daniel's possession.

Marcus watched the detective sign the evidence log.

"This can't disappear."

The detective looked him in the eye.

"It won't."

Meanwhile...

Khloe sat quietly by the window of her hospital room.

Rain tapped softly against the glass.

Her hands rested protectively over her stomach.

A gentle kick made her smile.

Marcus entered carrying fresh flowers.

White lilies.

Her favorite.

"I wasn't sure if you'd want to see me."

Khloe looked up.

"I always want to see you."

Marcus set the flowers beside her bed.

"I'm ashamed."

She reached for his hand.

"You don't have to punish yourself forever."

"I doubted you."

"You corrected your mistake."

Marcus shook his head.

"Not fast enough."

Khloe smiled sadly.

"Then don't waste another second."

She placed his hand against her stomach.

Their baby kicked again.

Marcus laughed quietly through tears.

"Our little fighter."

Khloe nodded.

"He already has your stubbornness."

For the first time since the attack...

Hope returned to the room.

Across the city...

The Manhattan District Attorney assigned senior prosecutor Rebecca Lawson to the case.

She watched the recovered surveillance footage three times.

Each viewing made her expression harder.

She turned toward Detective Owen Pierce.

"This isn't an accident."

"No."

"It appears deliberate."

Rebecca closed her laptop.

"I want Isabella Rossi brought in for questioning."

Detective Pierce nodded.

"Today?"

Rebecca looked at the screen one final time.

"Immediately."

Elsewhere...

Isabella Rossi stood inside her luxury apartment overlooking Central Park.

She hadn't slept.

Her phone had remained silent for hours.

That worried her more than any threat.

Silence meant someone was making decisions without telling her.

The intercom buzzed.

She answered.

"Yes?"

"Ms. Rossi..."

"Two detectives are downstairs requesting to speak with you."

Her heart skipped.

"So soon?"

She took one slow breath.

"Send them up."

Fifteen minutes later...

Rebecca Lawson entered the apartment.

Detective Pierce remained quietly beside her.

Rebecca smiled politely.

"Ms. Rossi."

"I understand you were present during last night's incident."

Isabella nodded.

"It was horrible."

Rebecca placed a folder on the table.

"We'd like to hear your version."

Isabella began exactly as she had rehearsed.

"Khloe became jealous."

"She accused me of having an affair with Marcus."

"I tried to leave."

"She grabbed me."

"I defended myself."

Rebecca listened without interruption.

Then she opened the folder.

Inside...

A still image from the recovered surveillance video.

It showed Isabella blocking Khloe's path.

Isabella's smile disappeared.

Rebecca calmly slid a second photograph across the table.

This one captured Isabella grabbing Khloe's wrist.

Then another.

Khloe trying to move away.

Then another.

Khloe falling.

Finally...

The image of Isabella standing over her.

Rebecca never raised her voice.

"Would you like to revise your statement?"

The room became silent.

Isabella stared at the photographs.

Her carefully prepared story was collapsing.

Yet...

She still wasn't ready to surrender.

"My attorney."

Rebecca nodded.

"Of course."

As the detectives left...

Isabella reached for her phone with trembling fingers.

Only one person could save her now.

An hour later...

Daniel received an unexpected visitor.

An elderly man wearing an expensive charcoal suit entered the hospital security office.

He introduced himself calmly.

"Arthur Sinclair."

Marcus immediately recognized the name.

Arthur Sinclair.

Founder of Sinclair Capital.

One of the wealthiest investors on Wall Street.

He had also served on the Thorne Global advisory board years earlier.

"What are you doing here?"

Arthur looked toward Daniel.

"I came because this isn't only about Isabella."

Marcus frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Arthur slowly removed an old photograph from his briefcase.

It showed four young executives standing together twenty-five years earlier.

One of them was Marcus's late father.

Another was Arthur Sinclair.

The third...

Marcus recognized immediately.

Anthony Rossi.

Isabella's father.

The fourth man's face had been partially torn away.

"Who was the fourth partner?"

Arthur hesitated.

"The man who disappeared."

Daniel narrowed his eyes.

"Disappeared?"

Arthur nodded slowly.

"He vanished after stealing hundreds of millions from our investment fund."

Marcus looked closer.

"The photograph is torn."

Arthur answered quietly.

"I tore it."

"Because I never wanted to remember him."

Daniel examined the remaining portion of the man's hand.

A silver ring.

Rectangular.

Engraved with one letter.

A.

Marcus immediately looked up.

"The reflection."

Daniel nodded.

"The man outside Khloe's hospital room..."

"...was wearing the same ring."

Arthur's face turned pale.

"That's impossible."

Marcus asked,

"Why?"

Arthur swallowed.

"Because the owner of that ring..."

"...was officially declared dead twenty years ago."

The room fell completely silent.

Daniel slowly placed the old photograph beside the enlarged image from the surveillance footage.

The rings matched perfectly.

Same shape.

Same engraving.

Same design.

Marcus looked toward Arthur.

"If he's alive..."

Arthur finished the sentence.

"Then everything we believed about the past..."

"...was a lie."

That evening...

Daniel ordered investigators to reopen every file connected to the missing fourth partner.

Financial fraud.

Corporate theft.

Identity changes.

International bank transfers.

Nothing was too old.

Nothing was dismissed.

Because suddenly...

The attack on Khloe looked far larger than a jealous rivalry.

It looked like the latest move in a conspiracy that had begun decades earlier.

As midnight approached...

Someone slipped an unmarked envelope beneath Daniel Carter's office door.

Inside was a single photograph.

The missing fourth partner.

Standing beside Isabella Rossi.

The photograph had been taken...

Only three weeks earlier.

On the back...

One handwritten sentence appeared.

"He's not dead.

He's waiting for Marcus."

Daniel slowly looked toward the dark hallway outside his office.

Somewhere in the hospital...

Someone had just confirmed his greatest fear.

The mastermind behind the attack...

May you like

Had finally stepped out of the shadows.
