Chapter 10: The Meeting at Pier 17

Chapter 10: The Meeting at Pier 17
The blinking GPS signal moved steadily across lower Manhattan.
Inside Daniel Carter's surveillance van, every pair of eyes remained fixed on the digital map.
Richard Monroe's sedan passed Wall Street.
Turned east.
Then headed toward the waterfront.
Marcus leaned forward.
"Where is he going?"
Samuel Briggs enlarged the map.
"Pier 17."
Daniel's expression remained calm.
"Keep your distance."
"No one moves until we know who he's meeting."
Three unmarked vehicles followed at separate intervals.
No flashing lights.
No sirens.
Just quiet observation.
Rebecca Lawson listened through her headset.
"Visual confirmation?"
Agent Collins answered immediately.
"Target has entered the parking structure."
Daniel looked toward Marcus.
"This is where we learn whether Richard is just a messenger..."
"...or something much worse."
Richard parked beneath the old shipping terminal.
He checked his mirrors twice.
No one appeared to be following him.
Confident, he stepped out carrying a slim black briefcase.
He walked toward an abandoned warehouse overlooking the Hudson River.
Inside...
Only one light was on.
A tall man stood near the windows with his back turned.
Richard stopped.
"I almost wasn't followed."
The man smiled faintly without turning around.
"Almost..."
"...is never good enough."
Richard lowered his head.
"I'm sorry."
The man slowly faced him.
It wasn't Adrian.
Marcus, watching through a long-range camera, frowned.
"Who is that?"
Daniel zoomed in.
"Facial recognition."
Samuel typed rapidly.
The database searched.
Five seconds.
Ten.
Then a match appeared.
Leonard Voss.
Former Chief Financial Officer of Blackwood-Thorne Capital.
Declared retired fifteen years earlier.
Marcus stared.
"Another ghost."
Inside the warehouse...
Richard handed Leonard the briefcase.
"The board is becoming suspicious."
Leonard calmly opened it.
Inside were confidential financial reports.
Projected merger agreements.
Security restructuring plans.
Everything marked CONFIDENTIAL.
Leonard smiled.
"Excellent."
Richard hesitated.
"Adrian promised this would end."
Leonard laughed quietly.
"You still believe promises?"
Before Richard could answer...
Another voice echoed from the darkness.
"It will end."
Both men turned.
Adrian Blackwood stepped out of the shadows.
He wore the same tailored charcoal coat.
The same silver ring.
The same calm smile.
Marcus's heartbeat quickened.
"There he is."
For the first time...
They were looking directly at the man who had haunted the Thorne family for twenty years.
Daniel immediately spoke into his radio.
"Nobody moves."
Marcus looked at him in disbelief.
"We have him!"
Daniel shook his head.
"Not yet."
Rebecca understood instantly.
"If we arrest him now..."
"...we lose everyone above him."
Marcus frowned.
"Above him?"
Rebecca nodded.
"Adrian didn't build this operation alone."
Inside the warehouse...
Adrian opened the confidential files one by one.
"Marcus is strengthening internal security."
"He suspects the board."
Leonard nodded.
"So we move tonight."
Richard's face changed.
"Tonight?"
Adrian looked directly at him.
"The shareholders' emergency meeting."
Richard suddenly understood.
"No..."
"You can't."
Adrian smiled.
"I already have."
Outside...
Samuel intercepted a text message leaving Richard's phone.
He quickly decrypted it.
His face lost all color.
"Daniel..."
"What?"
"They're planning something during tomorrow morning's shareholder meeting."
Marcus looked up.
"What kind of attack?"
Samuel enlarged the message.
Only four words appeared.
Vote before the truth.
Rebecca immediately understood.
"They're trying to remove you as CEO."
Marcus froze.
"They're using the scandal."
Daniel nodded.
"If you're removed..."
"...Adrian wins without ever entering court."
Back inside the warehouse...
Richard's conscience finally broke.
"I can't do this anymore."
Leonard looked up.
"What did you say?"
"I joined because you promised no one would get hurt."
"My family..."
"My career..."
"This wasn't supposed to become attempted murder."
The room became silent.
Adrian calmly closed the folder.
"You've become emotional."
Richard stepped backward.
"I'm done."
He turned toward the exit.
Adrian never raised his voice.
"Leonard."
A single word.
Leonard moved instantly.
He blocked Richard's path.
"You know too much."
Richard's eyes widened.
"No..."
Watching through a drone camera...
Marcus instinctively stepped forward.
"They're going to kill him."
Daniel grabbed his arm.
"Wait."
"No!"
"If we wait another second—"
Before Marcus finished speaking...
Richard shoved Leonard aside and sprinted toward the warehouse doors.
Adrian didn't chase him.
He simply watched.
Almost...
As though he expected it.
Richard burst outside.
Running directly toward the parking lot.
Straight toward the undercover surveillance teams.
"Help!"
He never finished the sentence.
A black SUV accelerated from behind a row of cargo containers.
Its tires screamed across the pavement.
Richard jumped aside just in time.
The vehicle slammed into concrete barriers instead.
Airbags exploded.
The driver immediately fled on foot.
Daniel shouted into his radio.
"Move!"
Federal agents surrounded the scene.
Within seconds...
The driver was in custody.
Marcus reached Richard first.
Richard collapsed against a parked car, gasping for breath.
"They..."
"They're going to destroy everything."
Marcus knelt beside him.
"Who?"
Richard looked directly into Marcus's eyes.
"Your father..."
Marcus frowned.
"My father died eight years ago."
Richard shook his head.
"No."
"He left something behind."
"What?"
Richard swallowed hard.
"A ledger."
"The original partnership ledger."
Marcus looked confused.
"What ledger?"
Richard whispered,
"It proves..."
"...Adrian never stole the money."
Silence.
Even Daniel stopped walking.
Marcus stared.
"Say that again."
Richard nodded weakly.
"The six hundred million..."
"...was taken by someone else."
Rebecca looked toward Daniel.
"If that's true..."
Daniel finished her sentence.
"Then the entire history of the Thorne empire..."
"...was built on a lie."
Inside the warehouse...
Federal agents stormed through every entrance.
Weapons drawn.
"Federal agents!"
"Hands where we can see them!"
The warehouse was empty.
Leonard Voss...
Gone.
Adrian Blackwood...
Gone.
Only one object remained.
An antique leather ledger resting alone on a wooden table.
Rebecca carefully opened it.
Every original partnership transaction from twenty-five years earlier had been preserved.
One final page had been marked with a red ribbon.
Marcus slowly turned it over.
The signature authorizing the transfer of six hundred million dollars...
Wasn't Adrian Blackwood's.
It belonged to...
Anthony Rossi.
Isabella Rossi's father.
Marcus looked up in disbelief.
"If Anthony stole the money..."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Then Adrian didn't disappear to escape justice."
"He disappeared..."
"...because someone framed him."
The room fell completely silent.
Outside...
High above Manhattan...
A helicopter crossed the skyline.
Inside sat Adrian Blackwood.
Watching the warehouse grow smaller beneath him.
His phone buzzed.
A message from Leonard.
They found the ledger.
Adrian smiled as he looked out over the city.
"Good."
The pilot glanced back.
"Wasn't that the evidence they needed?"
Adrian nodded.
"Exactly."
The pilot looked confused.
"You wanted them to find it?"
Adrian's smile slowly widened.
"Sometimes..."
"...the fastest way to destroy an empire..."
May you like
"...is to let it discover the truth."
