Chapter 2: The Perfect Lie

Chapter 2: The Perfect Lie

The private hospital suite erupted into controlled chaos.

Doctors and nurses surrounded Khloe within seconds, carefully lifting her onto a gurney while monitoring both her and the baby. The medical team spoke in calm, clipped voices, their professionalism masking the urgency of the situation.

"Clear the hallway."

"Notify obstetrics."

"Prepare the fetal monitoring room."

"Call Dr. Reynolds immediately."

Marcus stepped instinctively toward his wife.

"Khloe—"

She reached for his hand.

Their fingers touched for only a second before the medical staff wheeled her toward the emergency maternity unit.

She looked at him only once.

Not with anger.

Not with fear.

Only heartbreak.

"Protect our baby," she whispered.

Then she disappeared around the corner.

Marcus remained frozen.

Daniel Carter, Chief of Hospital Security, quietly instructed two officers to seal the suite.

"No one enters."

"No one leaves."

Every object remained exactly where it had fallen.

Broken crystal.

An overturned chair.

A torn silk scarf.

The room itself had become evidence.

Isabella suddenly let out another sob.

"I... I didn't mean for any of this to happen."

Marcus slowly turned toward her.

"What happened?"

She wrapped trembling arms around herself.

"I came upstairs to check on Khloe."

"She seemed upset during the gala."

"I thought maybe she needed someone to talk to."

Daniel glanced at her without saying a word.

Years of interviewing witnesses had taught him one lesson:

People telling the truth usually remembered events.

People telling lies often performed emotions.

Isabella lowered her eyes.

"The moment I walked in..."

"She accused me of trying to steal you."

Marcus remained silent.

"I told her she was imagining things."

"She became furious."

"She started yelling."

"I tried to leave."

Her voice cracked.

"But she grabbed my arm."

She carefully exposed a faint red mark near her wrist.

Marcus frowned.

"You see?"

"I tried to defend myself."

"She slipped."

"I never wanted anyone hurt."

The story flowed almost perfectly.

Almost.

Daniel noticed something.

She never once asked about Khloe.

She never asked whether the baby was alive.

Only whether people believed her.

Elaine Parker stood near the doorway, visibly shaken.

She had arrived only seconds after Marcus.

She hadn't witnessed the confrontation.

But something bothered her.

When Isabella cried...

No tears had appeared immediately.

They came several seconds later.

As though someone had flipped a switch.

Elaine quietly stored that observation away.

Meanwhile...

Two floors above...

Doctors worked rapidly inside the maternity emergency unit.

Monitors beeped steadily.

Khloe gritted her teeth as another wave of pain rolled through her body.

Dr. Amelia Reynolds examined the latest ultrasound.

"The baby's heartbeat is strong."

A collective breath filled the room.

"But..."

Every nurse looked toward her.

"Mrs. Thorne needs complete observation."

"We're not taking any chances."

Khloe nodded weakly.

"My baby..."

"Your child is stable."

"For now."

Relief flooded her eyes.

Then tears finally came.

Not because of the pain.

Because Marcus hadn't defended her.

Not immediately.

Back inside the suite...

Daniel approached one of his security supervisors.

"Camera coverage?"

"The hallway camera is active."

"What about inside?"

"The suite camera should have everything."

Daniel nodded.

"Good."

"Download the footage."

The technician typed rapidly into a tablet.

Five seconds later...

His expression changed.

"Sir..."

"What?"

"The file isn't available."

Daniel frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"The recording stopped."

"When?"

The technician swallowed.

"Exactly three minutes before Mr. Thorne entered."

Silence.

Daniel slowly looked up at the blinking camera.

Its indicator light was still flashing.

Someone had interrupted the recording.

Marcus overheard everything.

"The footage is gone?"

"So it appears."

Marcus stared at Isabella.

Her breathing became noticeably quicker.

Only for an instant.

Then she regained control.

"What footage?"

Daniel answered calmly.

"The hospital records every executive suite twenty-four hours a day."

"I didn't know that."

"You've attended enough charity galas here to know."

For the first time that evening...

Isabella had no answer.

Half an hour later...

News had already begun spreading downstairs.

Guests whispered in small circles.

"Something happened upstairs."

"I heard Mrs. Thorne collapsed."

"No..."

"I heard there was a fight."

Several reporters noticed security blocking the executive floor.

Camera lenses immediately turned toward the elevators.

Within minutes...

Social media exploded.

BREAKING: Incident involving billionaire Marcus Thorne's wife during charity gala.

No details.

Only speculation.

The internet did the rest.

Inside a nearby conference room...

Marcus sat alone.

His tuxedo jacket lay across a chair.

His phone buzzed constantly.

Board members.

Investors.

Reporters.

His mother.

He ignored every call.

His thoughts replayed the scene endlessly.

Khloe on the floor.

Isabella standing over her.

The broken crystal.

Something didn't fit.

If Khloe had attacked first...

Why had she been the one lying injured?

A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.

"Come in."

Daniel entered carrying a thin folder.

"I've secured the suite."

Marcus nodded.

"Any progress?"

"Not yet."

Daniel closed the door.

"Marcus..."

"This conversation stays between us."

Marcus looked up.

"I've known Khloe since she was five."

"I taught her how to ride a bicycle."

"I watched her graduate college."

"I walked her down the aisle when her father passed away."

His voice remained steady.

"I don't believe she attacked anyone."

Marcus sighed.

"Neither do I."

The admission surprised even himself.

Daniel continued.

"The missing footage concerns me."

"You think someone deleted it?"

"I think someone wanted us blind."

Marcus leaned forward.

"But whoever did it overlooked something."

Daniel allowed himself the faintest smile.

"Our security system doesn't rely on one recording."

Marcus frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"There are multiple backup systems."

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

"The footage still exists?"

"I'm not certain."

"But whoever erased the primary recording may not know about the emergency archive."

For the first time that night...

Hope appeared.

Across the hospital...

Inside a private waiting lounge...

Isabella quietly closed the door behind her.

The tears disappeared instantly.

She removed a second phone from her evening purse.

One number.

No contact name.

The call connected after two rings.

A man's voice answered.

"Is it done?"

She walked toward the window overlooking the city lights.

"There was a complication."

"What complication?"

"Marcus arrived too soon."

A long silence followed.

"And the recording?"

"I handled the main system."

Another pause.

"Then why do you sound nervous?"

Isabella stared toward the brightly lit hospital across the courtyard.

"Because Daniel Carter is smarter than I expected."

The man spoke only four words.

"Then finish this quickly."

The call ended.

Isabella slowly lowered the phone.

For the first time all evening...

Her confidence cracked.

Because she suddenly realized...

She wasn't only fighting Khloe anymore.

She was now fighting an entire family determined to uncover the truth.

And somewhere inside the hospital...

A forgotten backup server might already contain the evidence that could destroy everything she had spent years planning.
