Chapter 16: The Journal of Lies

Chapter 16: The Journal of Lies

No one spoke.

The underground Observation Room felt less like a secret archive and more like a museum dedicated to manipulation.

Marcus slowly turned the first page of the Observer's Journal.

The handwriting was elegant.

Deliberate.

Almost clinical.

The first entry read:

Power does not belong to the richest man.
It belongs to the one who decides what everyone believes.

Daniel exchanged a glance with Rebecca.

"This wasn't just surveillance."

Rebecca nodded.

"It was psychological control."

Marcus continued reading.

Each journal entry documented conversations, business deals, political appointments, and private arguments.

Nothing had escaped the Observer's attention.

One page stopped Marcus cold.

June 14 — Twenty-Nine Years Ago

Anthony Rossi remains ambitious.
Ambition is easier to purchase than loyalty.

Another page.

October 3

Edward Thorne still believes integrity can protect him.
That belief will eventually become his greatest weakness.

Marcus closed his eyes.

"He studied my father."

Daniel answered quietly,

"No."

"He hunted him."

Samuel Briggs photographed every page.

"There are at least thirty journals."

Rebecca looked around the hidden archive.

"Thirty years of evidence."

Marcus walked toward another shelf.

Each leather spine carried a gold number.

Volume One.

Volume Two.

Volume Three.

...

Volume Twenty-Nine.

Only one space remained empty.

Daniel noticed it immediately.

"There's another journal."

Marcus frowned.

"Volume Thirty."

Samuel searched the room.

Nothing.

"It isn't here."

At that same moment...

Miles away...

Adrian Blackwood stood inside an abandoned railway station.

In his hands rested another leather-bound book.

Observer's Journal – Volume Thirty

Leonard stared at it.

"So he never kept the final volume here."

Adrian smiled faintly.

"No."

"The last journal never belonged to him."

Leonard looked confused.

"Then whose is it?"

Adrian slowly answered,

"Mine."

Back in the underground archive...

Rebecca found another hidden drawer beneath the oak desk.

Inside lay dozens of cassette tapes.

Each carried handwritten labels.

Edward Thorne

Anthony Rossi

Arthur Sinclair

Judge Mercer

Adrian Blackwood

Marcus picked up the cassette labeled with Adrian's name.

"He recorded him?"

Daniel nodded.

"Apparently every important conversation."

Samuel quickly connected an old tape player.

The room filled with static.

Then...

A younger Adrian Blackwood spoke.

"I won't let you destroy this company."

Another voice answered calmly.

It wasn't Anthony Rossi.

It wasn't Edward Thorne.

It wasn't Arthur Sinclair.

The unknown man said only one sentence.

"You mistake ownership for control."

Silence followed.

Then the recording ended.

Marcus frowned.

"That's him."

"The Observer."

Rebecca replayed the sentence three more times.

She enlarged the audio waveform.

Samuel processed the recording through voice enhancement software.

The system searched federal voice databases.

No match.

Daniel sighed.

"He stayed invisible."

Rebecca looked thoughtful.

"Not invisible."

"Careful."

Upstairs...

An FBI agent hurried into the room.

"Director Carter."

Daniel turned.

"What is it?"

"We found a hidden communications room."

Everyone followed him.

Behind another concealed wall...

They discovered a bank of obsolete monitors.

Satellite receivers.

Tape recorders.

Telephone intercept equipment.

For decades...

Someone had monitored the founders from this estate.

Samuel examined the wiring.

"This wasn't built by amateurs."

Marcus looked around.

"This cost millions."

Rebecca quietly added,

"And someone kept it operating."

Samuel suddenly pointed toward a dusty filing cabinet.

"There."

Inside...

Every maintenance invoice for the hidden facility.

Most had been paid in cash.

But one receipt carried a signature.

Not the Observer.

Not Anthony Rossi.

Not Adrian.

A company.

Sterling Security Solutions

Daniel frowned.

"I know that name."

Rebecca searched the FBI database.

"It still exists."

Marcus looked surprised.

"They're one of the largest private security firms in the country."

Samuel slowly scrolled further.

"The founder..."

His expression changed.

"Oh..."

Marcus looked up.

"What?"

Samuel swallowed.

"The company founder is..."

Elias Vaughn.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"So Vaughn didn't disappear."

"He changed industries."

Rebecca added,

"And built an intelligence company."

Marcus slowly understood.

"Meaning..."

Daniel finished the sentence.

"He never stopped watching."

At FBI headquarters...

Agents immediately obtained emergency warrants.

Dozens of Sterling Security offices were raided simultaneously.

Computers.

Servers.

Financial records.

Everything was seized.

Hours later...

The first report arrived.

Samuel hurried into the conference room.

"You need to see this."

He projected the employee database.

Almost every executive record had been erased.

Except one.

Chief Executive Officer:

Unknown

Rebecca frowned.

"They removed Vaughn's name."

Samuel nodded.

"But they missed something."

He enlarged the emergency contact file.

Listed under CEO:

Evelyn Cross

Marcus remembered the name instantly.

"My grandfather replaced her."

Daniel nodded.

"And now she's back."

Meanwhile...

Khloe sat beside the nursery window watching snow fall over Manhattan.

She placed one hand over her stomach.

The baby kicked gently.

Marcus called through a secure video connection.

"I'll be home soon."

Khloe smiled.

"Did you find anything?"

Marcus hesitated.

"I found thirty years of lies."

Khloe looked at him carefully.

"And the truth?"

Marcus answered softly.

"I'm getting closer."

She smiled.

"Then come home alive."

Later that night...

The tactical team entered Sterling Security's headquarters.

The building appeared abandoned.

Too abandoned.

Every computer had been wiped clean.

Every file cabinet stood open.

Someone had evacuated only hours earlier.

Daniel searched the executive office.

Nothing.

Then...

He noticed a framed painting hanging slightly crooked.

Behind it...

A wall safe.

Samuel cracked the digital lock.

Inside rested only a single envelope.

Marcus opened it.

A handwritten letter.

Addressed to him.

Marcus,

If you are reading this, then Daniel has finally caught up.

Good.

You deserve answers.

But before I give them...

Ask yourself one question.

Who benefited most from Edward Thorne's death?

There was no signature.

Only the silver eye symbol.

Rebecca whispered,

"He wants Marcus doubting everyone."

Daniel nodded.

"That's how the Observer survives."

Marcus folded the letter slowly.

"I won't let him decide what I believe."

At that exact moment...

Samuel's phone rang.

He answered.

His face turned pale.

"What happened?"

Daniel asked.

Samuel lowered the phone.

"The maternity doctor..."

"...the one treating Khloe..."

"...has disappeared."

Marcus's blood ran cold.

"What?"

Samuel nodded.

"She left the hospital an hour ago."

"Her car was found abandoned."

"And..."

Marcus stepped closer.

"And what?"

Samuel swallowed.

"The last person seen meeting with her..."

"...was a woman using the name Evelyn Cross."

The room fell completely silent.

For the first time...

The conspiracy was no longer chasing the past.

May you like

It had reached Marcus's family once again.
