Chapter 9: The Enemy Within

Chapter 9: The Enemy Within
The black sedan disappeared into the Manhattan traffic before anyone inside the hospital knew Adrian Blackwood had been watching them.
Inside the car, Adrian calmly closed the silver pocket watch.
He wasn't the bitter old man Marcus had imagined.
His tailored charcoal suit fit perfectly.
His silver hair was neatly combed.
His voice remained calm.
Twenty years hadn't broken him.
They had refined him.
He looked out the window as skyscrapers reflected the morning sun.
"They've found the first breadcrumb."
The driver glanced into the rearview mirror.
"Should we disappear again?"
Adrian smiled faintly.
"No."
"It's time they started chasing me."
Back at St. Victoria Medical Center...
Marcus barely slept.
His office inside the hospital had become a temporary command center.
Every wall was covered with photographs.
Financial records.
Visitor logs.
Surveillance stills.
In the center stood one large board.
At the top...
WHO IS HELPING ADRIAN?
Daniel entered carrying another folder.
"We received the financial audit."
Marcus looked up.
"And?"
Daniel placed several documents on the table.
"The attack wasn't just personal."
"It was funded."
Rebecca Lawson joined them.
"The FBI traced payments made over the past eighteen months."
Marcus frowned.
"To Isabella?"
Rebecca nodded.
"Not directly."
She spread out a series of bank transfers.
Each payment had moved through multiple shell companies.
Dubai.
Luxembourg.
Singapore.
Finally ending inside a consulting firm in New York.
Daniel looked closer.
"Who's the owner?"
Rebecca answered.
"Officially..."
"No one."
"But the company secretary signed every filing."
She turned over the last page.
Marcus froze.
Elaine Parker.
Silence filled the room.
Marcus immediately shook his head.
"No."
"Elaine organized our charity events for eight years."
"She introduced Khloe to half our donors."
Daniel remained calm.
"That doesn't mean she's guilty."
Rebecca nodded.
"It means we ask questions."
At that same moment...
Elaine Parker sat quietly inside her office overlooking the hospital gardens.
She stared at an old photograph on her desk.
It showed her standing beside Khloe at the opening of the pediatric wing.
Both women were laughing.
A knock interrupted her thoughts.
She smiled.
"Come in."
Instead of a nurse...
Two FBI agents entered.
Her smile disappeared.
"Ms. Parker..."
"We'd like to ask you a few questions."
Thirty minutes later...
Inside an interview room...
Rebecca placed the financial records on the table.
"Do you recognize this company?"
Elaine adjusted her glasses.
"No."
Rebecca pointed toward the signature.
"That's your name."
Elaine leaned closer.
Then frowned.
"That's not my signature."
The room became quiet.
Rebecca slid another document forward.
Hospital employment records.
Elaine immediately pointed at them.
"Those are my signatures."
She compared both pages.
"They're different."
Rebecca looked carefully.
She was right.
The forged signature was close.
Very close.
But not identical.
Someone had copied Elaine's identity.
Meanwhile...
Daniel received another call from Samuel Briggs.
"I found something strange."
"What is it?"
"The fake consulting company..."
"It shares an office address with another corporation."
Daniel waited.
Samuel enlarged the registration.
"The owner..."
"...is Victor Hayes."
Marcus looked up sharply.
"The IT employee."
Daniel nodded.
"The same man who stole the hard drive."
Across town...
Victor Hayes sat alone inside a warehouse office.
A television reported breaking news.
Federal investigators expand probe into Thorne hospital attack.
Victor muted the television.
His hands trembled.
The door opened.
Adrian Blackwood entered without security.
Victor immediately stood.
"They're getting too close."
Adrian calmly removed his gloves.
"I expected that."
"They questioned Isabella."
"They found the surveillance."
"They're tracing the money."
Adrian poured himself a glass of water.
"And yet..."
"...they're still asking the wrong question."
Victor looked confused.
"What do you mean?"
Adrian smiled.
"They're looking for my helpers."
"When they should be asking..."
"...who betrayed me."
Back at the hospital...
Khloe had finally been discharged from intensive observation.
Doctors allowed her to recover inside the family's penthouse under private medical supervision.
Before leaving...
She walked slowly through the maternity wing.
Every nurse smiled warmly.
She stopped beside Daniel.
"You saved my life."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
"You saved yourself."
"I only followed the evidence."
Khloe smiled.
"My father always said you'd never quit until the truth came out."
Daniel laughed softly.
"He knew me well."
As Marcus helped Khloe into the waiting car...
A young nurse hurried toward them.
"Mrs. Thorne!"
She held out a sealed envelope.
"A man asked me to give you this."
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
"What man?"
"I've never seen him before."
"He said it was personal."
Daniel carefully opened the envelope.
Inside...
A sonogram photograph.
Not Khloe's.
Someone else's.
Written across the bottom were six chilling words.
"One heir survives. One does not."
Khloe instinctively placed both hands over her stomach.
Marcus's expression darkened.
"This isn't just intimidation."
Daniel nodded.
"It's psychological warfare."
Later that afternoon...
Rebecca Lawson received forensic results from the handwriting analysis.
The message inside the envelope...
Matched the writing found in the wooden box.
Same pen pressure.
Same ink.
Same author.
Adrian Blackwood.
He wanted them to know he was responsible.
But why?
Rebecca stared at the evidence board.
Then the answer struck her.
"He isn't hiding."
Detective Pierce looked up.
"No."
"He's recruiting."
That evening...
Marcus called every executive of Thorne Global to headquarters.
No exceptions.
The massive boardroom slowly filled.
Directors.
Vice presidents.
Senior attorneys.
Security advisors.
Marcus stood at the head of the table.
"Someone inside this company has been helping Adrian Blackwood."
No one spoke.
"We're conducting a complete internal investigation."
A few faces remained calm.
Others looked nervous.
Marcus noticed every reaction.
Especially one.
Chief Financial Officer Richard Monroe quietly loosened his tie.
Only for a second.
But Daniel saw it too.
He leaned toward Marcus and whispered,
"Watch Monroe."
Marcus nodded almost imperceptibly.
As the meeting ended...
Richard Monroe walked calmly toward the underground parking garage.
He looked completely composed.
Once inside his car...
He immediately dialed a secure number.
"They suspect someone inside the company."
A familiar voice answered.
"I know."
Richard hesitated.
"They're watching me."
The voice remained calm.
"Then it's time."
Richard swallowed.
"For what?"
A long silence followed.
Then Adrian Blackwood spoke four words.
"Activate Phase Two."
The call ended.
Richard stared at his phone.
Across the dashboard...
A small red light began blinking.
A message appeared on the encrypted device mounted beneath the steering wheel.
PHASE TWO INITIATED
Unknown to Richard...
A tiny tracking device had already been attached beneath his car during the board meeting.
As he drove out of the garage...
Daniel Carter watched the live GPS signal appear on his tablet.
Marcus looked over his shoulder.
"You knew."
Daniel smiled.
"I had a feeling."
Marcus asked quietly,
"So where is he going?"
Daniel watched the blinking dot move across Manhattan.
"I don't know yet."
"But wherever Richard Monroe stops..."
"They'll lead us one step closer..."
May you like
"...to Adrian Blackwood."
