Chapter 6: The Recording No One Could Erase

Chapter 6: The Recording No One Could Erase
Rain fell steadily against the windows of St. Victoria Medical Center.
Inside the Security Operations Center, Daniel Carter stood before a wall of monitors, replaying every decision made over the past twelve hours.
Marcus entered carrying two cups of coffee.
"Any luck?"
Daniel accepted one with a quiet nod.
"Not luck."
"Logic."
Marcus frowned.
"I don't understand."
Daniel pointed toward the digital blueprint of the hospital.
"Everyone has been looking at where the recording went."
"We should have been asking..."
"...where it couldn't go."
Samuel Briggs looked up from his keyboard.
"I've searched every server."
Daniel shook his head.
"Not every one."
Samuel paused.
"What do you mean?"
Daniel walked toward a dusty cabinet in the corner of the room.
Most of the equipment inside had been disconnected years earlier during the hospital's renovation.
Except for one blinking green light.
"This."
Samuel's eyes widened.
"No..."
Daniel smiled.
"The legacy archive."
Five years earlier, before the hospital upgraded its security system, every surveillance recording had been mirrored onto an offline backup server designed to activate only during catastrophic failures.
Almost no one remembered it.
The server wasn't connected to the internet.
It couldn't be hacked remotely.
It couldn't be accessed through employee accounts.
It quietly stored encrypted copies of critical footage—and then went back to sleep.
Samuel whispered, almost to himself,
"I completely forgot this existed."
Daniel answered,
"So did the person who planned all of this."
Samuel connected a portable monitor to the aging machine.
The screen flickered.
A loading bar appeared.
Twenty percent.
Forty.
Sixty.
Marcus could hear his own heartbeat.
Finally—
The directory opened.
Thousands of archived files appeared on the screen.
Samuel searched the timestamp.
9:31 p.m.
Private Executive Suite.
His fingers froze over the keyboard.
"It's here."
No one spoke.
Samuel opened the file.
The recording began.
The suite appeared exactly as it had looked before the confrontation.
Khloe stood beside the window, gently rubbing her stomach.
A few seconds later...
The door opened.
Isabella Rossi entered.
She smiled.
The conversation began without audio.
Daniel quietly observed every movement.
Body language often revealed more than words.
Khloe remained calm.
Isabella repeatedly stepped closer.
Khloe tried to move toward the door.
Isabella blocked her path.
Marcus stared at the screen without blinking.
The confrontation escalated.
Khloe attempted to leave again.
Isabella grabbed her wrist.
Khloe pulled away.
A champagne glass fell from the table and shattered.
Then—
The image everyone had been waiting for.
Khloe stumbled backward into the marble table.
She hadn't attacked.
She had been trying to escape.
Marcus felt his stomach twist.
The footage continued.
Isabella advanced again.
Khloe raised both hands—not to strike—but to protect herself and her unborn child.
Then Isabella forcefully shoved her.
Khloe fell hard to the floor.
As she curled around her stomach, Isabella stepped toward her once more.
Before Marcus entered...
She deliberately kicked Khloe in the side.
The room fell silent.
Even the technicians stopped breathing.
Marcus closed his eyes.
Every doubt.
Every question.
Gone.
The recording wasn't finished.
Daniel leaned closer.
"Keep playing."
Seconds later...
Isabella suddenly heard footsteps in the hallway.
Her entire posture changed.
She quickly adjusted her dress.
Smoothed her hair.
Then—
She deliberately scratched her own wrist against the broken edge of the marble table.
Marcus stared in disbelief.
"What..."
The screen answered.
She looked into a nearby decorative mirror.
Practiced a frightened expression.
Then positioned herself several feet away.
Exactly where Marcus had found her.
When the door burst open...
She pointed toward Khloe.
Her mouth formed the words—
"She attacked me."
No one in the room spoke for nearly a full minute.
Marcus finally whispered,
"I almost believed her."
Daniel looked at him.
"But you didn't."
Marcus nodded slowly.
"Not anymore."
At that same moment...
Across the city...
Isabella Rossi sat inside her apartment watching financial news.
Her phone rang.
Victor Hayes.
She answered immediately.
"What happened?"
"They found me."
Her face turned pale.
"The drive is gone."
She stood.
"What?"
"I dropped it into the harbor."
Silence.
Then Victor added quietly,
"They're following everyone now."
The call disconnected.
For the first time since the plan began...
Isabella realized something terrifying.
If Victor had been followed...
Then every connection between them could soon be exposed.
Meanwhile...
Daniel wasn't celebrating.
He replayed one specific section of the video.
Again.
And again.
Marcus noticed.
"What are you looking at?"
Daniel pointed toward the timestamp.
"Watch the doorway."
Marcus frowned.
"The door?"
"No."
"The reflection."
In the polished brass trim beside the entrance...
A distorted reflection appeared for less than two seconds.
Someone else stood in the hallway before Marcus arrived.
Someone wearing black gloves.
The figure never entered the suite.
Instead...
They watched.
Then disappeared.
Samuel enlarged the reflection.
The image remained blurry.
Too blurry to identify a face.
But one detail stood out.
A silver ring.
Large.
Rectangular.
Engraved with the letter...
A.
Marcus looked confused.
"Who's that?"
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he picked up the hospital's visitor log.
Then he quietly smiled.
"I think..."
"...we've just discovered Isabella wasn't working alone."
At Thorne Global Headquarters...
Chairman Harold Bennett received an anonymous envelope.
Inside was a single photograph.
Marcus embracing Khloe in the hospital.
Across the picture, someone had written in black ink:
If he stays with her...
The company falls next.
Harold's expression darkened.
Someone wasn't just attacking Marcus's family anymore.
They were declaring war on the entire Thorne empire.
Back inside the Security Operations Center...
Samuel exported three encrypted copies of the surveillance video.
One would be secured in the hospital vault.
One would be delivered directly to the district attorney.
One would remain with Daniel.
Marcus watched the progress bar reach one hundred percent.
At last...
The truth was safe.
Or so they believed.
Then every monitor inside the room suddenly went black.
One by one.
The lights flickered.
Emergency power activated.
Samuel stared at his console.
"We're under attack."
Daniel looked toward the dark screens.
"What happened?"
Samuel's fingers raced across the keyboard.
"Someone just accessed our internal network."
Marcus asked,
"Can they erase the footage?"
Samuel shook his head.
"No."
"They know they can't."
"Then what are they doing?"
Before Samuel could answer...
Every monitor lit up again.
Only one image remained.
A single black screen.
White letters slowly appeared.
STOP DIGGING.
NEXT TIME...
NO ONE SURVIVES.
The message vanished as suddenly as it had appeared.
The room fell into complete silence.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
"This isn't over."
Marcus nodded.
"No."
May you like
"It's only beginning."
