Chapter 10: Beneath the Red Water Tower

Chapter 10: Beneath the Red Water Tower

No one in the FBI command center spoke.

Twenty-three heat signatures.

Twenty-three possible hostages.

What I had believed was a desperate kidnapping had become something much larger.

Agent Ross looked around the room.

"This is no longer a family case."

He pointed to the tactical map.

"This is a hostage rescue."

A SWAT commander nodded.

"And possibly a human trafficking investigation."

The words hit me like a punch.

Human trafficking.

I looked back at Maya's frozen image on the monitor.

She had somehow found the courage to warn us—not just about herself, but about everyone else trapped beneath that mill.

Even terrified...

She was thinking of others.

Just like Sarah.

The Plan

Ross gathered the team around the map.

"There are three entrances."

"The main loading dock."

"The river tunnel."

"And an old maintenance shaft beneath the water tower."

Marcus studied the blueprints.

"The loading dock is too exposed."

"The river tunnel is partially flooded."

The bomb technician pointed to the maintenance shaft.

"It's narrow."

"But it leads directly beneath the basement."

Ross nodded.

"That's our entry point."

He looked at me.

"Richard."

"I need you to stay here."

I opened my mouth to argue.

Before I could, Daniel placed a hand on my shoulder.

"If you go in..."

"...Victor will use you."

I hated hearing it.

Because I knew he was right.

Inside the Mill

One hour later.

Night had fallen.

Rain continued to pound the roof of the abandoned paper mill.

Eight members of the FBI Hostage Rescue Team crawled silently through the maintenance shaft.

Marcus was with them.

So was Agent Ross.

Helmet cameras streamed live video back to the command center.

The tunnel smelled of rust and mold.

Water reached their knees.

No one spoke above a whisper.

Marcus checked his watch.

"Three minutes."

The team reached a rusted metal grate.

Ross carefully looked through the opening.

His voice became almost inaudible.

"I have visual."

The camera tilted downward.

The basement came into view.

Rows of metal cages.

Not prison cells.

Cages.

Inside them...

Men.

Women.

Teenagers.

Some appeared weak.

Others lay motionless on dirty mattresses.

The youngest couldn't have been more than fifteen.

My stomach turned.

"What have we walked into?"

Ross answered quietly.

"A prison."

Maya's Secret

The camera shifted toward the far end of the basement.

There...

Sat Maya.

She wasn't inside a cage.

She sat at a small wooden table with a blanket wrapped around her shoulders.

An elderly woman sat beside her.

The woman gently held Maya's hand.

Marcus whispered,

"Who's that?"

Ross zoomed in.

The elderly woman noticed the movement above.

Instead of panicking...

She smiled.

Then she subtly shook her head.

A warning.

Don't move yet.

She knew they were there.

Who was she?

Eleanor's Regret

At the same moment, back at FBI headquarters, Eleanor sat alone in an interrogation room.

She had been silent for hours.

Finally...

She asked for Agent Ross.

When he entered, she looked completely defeated.

"I know something."

Ross folded his arms.

"Then start talking."

Tears filled her eyes.

"I never met Victor by accident."

Ross waited.

"My father worked for the Harrington family."

"He introduced me."

She took a deep breath.

"Victor told me Richard's first marriage had left one loose end."

"Maya."

"He said if I became Richard's wife..."

"...I would eventually become Maya's legal guardian."

Ross looked at her carefully.

"You knew about the trust?"

"I knew there was money."

"I didn't know how much."

She lowered her head.

"By the time I realized what Victor truly wanted..."

"...I was already trapped."

Ross remained expressionless.

"Why tell us now?"

Eleanor whispered,

"Because Victor never intended to leave me alive either."

The Countdown

Back at the mill, the tactical team prepared to breach.

Then...

Every light inside the basement suddenly came on.

Victor's voice echoed through loudspeakers.

"Good evening, Agent Ross."

The entire team froze.

"You've always been predictable."

Ross looked around.

"He's watching us."

Victor laughed.

"Of course I am."

Hidden cameras.

They had walked straight into them.

The loudspeaker crackled again.

"I'll make you an offer."

Ross remained silent.

"Leave now..."

"...and the hostages live."

"Continue..."

"...and everyone dies."

The bomb technician listened through his headset.

Then his face changed.

"Agent..."

"I'm detecting another signal."

"What kind?"

He swallowed.

"There are explosives..."

"...inside the basement."

Not only around the water tower.

Inside the room with the hostages.

The Old Woman

As Victor continued speaking, the elderly woman beside Maya slowly stood.

She looked directly toward one of the hidden cameras.

Then she did something completely unexpected.

She smiled.

Victor's voice stopped.

The woman calmly reached into her sleeve and removed a small silver pendant.

She pressed it against the wall beside her.

A faint click echoed through the basement.

Marcus frowned.

"What did she just do?"

Suddenly...

Half the security cameras went dark.

Alarm lights flashed throughout the building.

Victor shouted over the loudspeaker.

"No!"

The old woman turned toward Maya.

"Now, child."

Maya grabbed her hand.

Together, they ran toward a hidden steel door that had just slid open in the back wall.

Ross shouted,

"Move! Move! Move!"

The rescue team charged through the grate.

At that exact moment...

Victor's furious voice echoed one final time through the mill.

"You should have stayed away."

Then every light went out.

Complete darkness.

One second later...

May you like

The first explosion shook the foundation of the building.
