Chapter 14: A Father’s Gamble

Chapter 14: A Father’s Gamble

The message glowed on my phone.

Come alone... or lose them both.

I read it twice.

Then a third time.

Agent Ross took the phone from my hand.

"It was routed through six different countries," one of the FBI cyber analysts said after a quick scan. "We're not tracing that in time."

Ross looked at me.

"You're still not going."

I met his eyes.

"Victor won't kill me immediately."

"You don't know that."

"No."

"But I know him."

Everyone in the room turned toward me.

"He doesn't want a quick victory."

"He wants me to watch him win."

Grace nodded slowly.

"That's how Victor thinks."

"He doesn't destroy people."

"He destroys hope."

Maya's Promise

While the tactical teams prepared, Maya quietly tugged on my sleeve.

"Daddy..."

I knelt beside her.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out something small.

A silver button.

"I took it from Victor's jacket."

I stared at her.

"When?"

"When he wasn't looking."

Marcus smiled despite the tension.

"That's my girl."

The FBI technician examined it.

"It isn't a button."

He carefully twisted it apart.

Inside was a tiny electronic chip.

Ross leaned closer.

"A tracker?"

The technician nodded.

"And a microphone."

Victor had unknowingly carried a surveillance device... because Maya had stolen it.

For the first time in hours, we had a chance.

Going Alone

Thirty minutes later, I drove through the gates of the Sterling estate.

Alone.

At least, that's what Victor believed.

Hidden nearly a mile away, FBI snipers watched through high-powered scopes.

The hostage rescue team moved silently through the surrounding woods.

The chip Maya had stolen transmitted Victor's voice in real time.

"...He's coming."

Another man answered.

"What about the agents?"

"He'll come alone."

Victor sounded confident.

"He always keeps his promises."

Home

The mansion stood exactly as I had left it.

Rain dripped from the stone columns.

The front door was open.

Inside...

Every light was on.

The dining room table had been reset.

Fresh candles burned.

New food covered every plate.

It looked almost identical to the dinner party Eleanor had hosted.

Except this time...

Only two people sat at the table.

Victor.

And Emily.

Emily looked frightened.

Victor smiled warmly.

"Richard."

He gestured toward the empty chair.

"Please."

"Join us."

I remained standing.

"Let the girl go."

Victor sliced a piece of steak with perfect composure.

"You always rush to the ending."

"Sarah said the same thing."

Hearing her name from his mouth made my blood boil.

"You don't deserve to say her name."

For the first time...

Victor's smile faded.

"You think you knew Sarah."

"I loved her."

"You loved the woman she wanted you to see."

The Family Secret

Victor stood and walked slowly toward the fireplace.

"My father chose Sarah."

"He rejected me."

"He called me dangerous."

Victor laughed bitterly.

"Perhaps he was right."

He looked back at me.

"But Sarah wasn't innocent."

"What are you talking about?"

"She lied to you."

"No."

"She did."

Victor reached into his coat and removed an old photograph.

He tossed it onto the table.

Sarah.

Victor.

Two elderly people.

And...

A little girl.

She couldn't have been older than five.

"Who's that?" I asked.

Victor smiled.

"My daughter."

I frowned.

"I thought you never had children."

"I did."

He picked up the photograph.

"Her name was Lily."

His voice softened for the first time.

"Sarah loved her."

I looked closer.

Sarah was holding the little girl in her arms.

Both were smiling.

"What happened to her?"

Victor's eyes became cold again.

"She died."

"How?"

He looked directly at me.

"The same year Sarah inherited everything."

Grace, listening through the FBI earpiece from outside, whispered,

"He's lying..."

Ross answered quietly,

"Maybe."

"But let him keep talking."

Emily Speaks

Victor poured himself a glass of wine.

Then unexpectedly, Emily spoke.

"He's lying."

The room froze.

Victor slowly turned toward her.

Emily's voice trembled.

"Lily didn't die."

Victor's face hardened.

Emily continued.

"I found her picture downstairs."

"She's alive."

Victor's expression changed from surprise...

...to rage.

"You were never supposed to see that room."

Emily backed away.

"You told us she was dead."

Victor took one slow step toward her.

I immediately moved between them.

"Don't."

He stopped.

His eyes met mine.

Then...

He smiled again.

"Interesting."

"So that's your weakness."

He looked toward Emily.

"Not Maya."

"Any child."

The Bomb

Suddenly...

A loud beeping echoed beneath the floor.

Victor glanced at his watch.

"Right on time."

The hidden microphone in his jacket transmitted every sound to the FBI command vehicle.

The bomb technician shouted through Ross's headset.

"The timer just accelerated!"

Ross cursed.

"How much time?"

The answer came back immediately.

"Eight minutes."

The original timer had been overridden.

Eight minutes until detonation.

The Truth About the Mansion

Victor calmly walked to the large window overlooking the estate.

"You know why I chose this house?"

I said nothing.

He answered anyway.

"Because your father built it."

"My father?"

"He bought the land from my father."

Victor smiled.

"He thought he was purchasing a home."

"He was actually purchasing my family's grave."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Victor slowly pressed a hidden switch beside the fireplace.

A section of the wooden floor slid open.

Beneath it...

A narrow staircase descended into darkness.

Victor looked back at me.

"The answers you've spent four years searching for..."

"...are waiting below."

He gestured toward the staircase.

"Come."

Outside, Agent Ross listened through the microphone.

He made his decision.

"All teams..."

"Move in."

At that exact moment...

The front door slammed shut on its own.

Heavy steel security shutters dropped over every window.

The mansion was instantly sealed.

And deep beneath the house...

The countdown reached:
