Chapter 12: The House Built to Explode

Chapter 12: The House Built to Explode

For a moment, no one breathed.

The Sterling estate.

My home.

The place where Sarah and I had raised Maya.

The place where every birthday, every Christmas, every family memory still lived.

Agent Ross grabbed his radio.

"Bomb Command, repeat your last transmission."

Static crackled.

Then the technician's voice returned.

"We've confirmed multiple explosive signatures beneath the foundation of the Sterling estate."

My heart sank.

"How is that possible?"

"They weren't recently installed."

Ross looked at me.

"What do you mean?"

The technician hesitated.

"Based on the corrosion and the wiring..."

"...some of these devices have been there for years."

Years.

That meant they had been hidden long before Eleanor entered my life.

Long before the kidnapping.

Victor's obsession had begun much earlier than any of us imagined.

The Escape

The chapel began to shake as another explosion echoed through the tunnel.

Chunks of concrete fell from the ceiling.

Marcus looked around.

"The structure won't hold much longer."

Ross pointed toward the rear exit.

"Move!"

The rescued hostages were led through the tunnel one by one.

Several could barely walk.

Others carried children in their arms.

Maya held tightly to my hand.

"I'm scared, Daddy."

I knelt in front of her.

"Look at me."

She did.

"No matter what happens..."

"I will never let anyone take you away again."

She nodded, tears filling her eyes.

"I believe you."

Eleanor's Last Chance

Back at FBI headquarters, Eleanor watched the rescue operation on a monitor.

When she heard Victor mention the Sterling estate, her face turned white.

She slammed her hands on the interrogation table.

"I know where the detonator is!"

The agents exchanged glances.

Agent Collins stepped forward.

"Talk."

"It's not at the estate."

"Where is it?"

"Victor never trusted remote signals."

"He built a manual override."

"Location?"

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"Inside the old Harrington Winery."

Ross, listening through his earpiece, immediately reacted.

"The winery?"

Grace's expression changed.

"So that's where he hid it."

I looked at her.

"You know the place?"

She nodded slowly.

"Victor rebuilt the underground wine cellars years ago."

"They're a maze."

"And there's one room..."

"...that even I was never allowed to enter."

A Race Against Time

Ross divided the operation.

"Team Alpha secures the hostages."

"Team Bravo evacuates the Sterling estate."

"Team Charlie comes with me to the winery."

I stepped forward.

"I'm going."

Ross didn't argue this time.

He simply handed me a bulletproof vest.

"Stay behind me."

Marcus smirked.

"I'll hold you to that."

The Empty Mansion

Meanwhile, bomb technicians stormed the Sterling estate.

The mansion stood eerily silent.

The luxurious dining room remained exactly as we'd left it days earlier.

Crystal glasses still sat on the table.

Half-eaten meals had spoiled.

The chair where Maya had once been forbidden to sit remained empty.

A technician scanned the floor with ground-penetrating radar.

His screen lit up.

"Multiple cavities beneath the foundation."

Another technician pried open a maintenance hatch in the basement.

The moment the flashlight beam disappeared into the darkness...

Everyone froze.

Rows of military-grade explosives stretched beneath the house like a deadly spiderweb.

A digital timer blinked.

05:58:17

Just under six hours remained.

The Winery

The Harrington Winery had been abandoned for almost twenty years.

Vines covered the cracked stone walls.

Broken barrels lay scattered across the courtyard.

But one thing didn't fit.

Fresh tire tracks.

Ross raised his fist.

The team spread out.

Marcus quietly opened the cellar door.

Cold air rushed upward.

The staircase descended deep underground.

Grace whispered,

"This is where Victor always came when he wanted to disappear."

We moved silently.

One step.

Then another.

At the bottom of the stairs stood a massive steel door.

Unlike everything else in the abandoned winery...

It was brand new.

A keypad glowed beside it.

Then a speaker crackled.

Victor's voice echoed through the corridor.

"Richard."

"I knew you'd come."

The steel door slowly unlocked.

Ross raised his weapon.

"Stay alert."

The door opened.

Inside...

There was no Victor.

Only a single chair.

And sitting calmly in it...

Was Thomas Bennett.

He looked exhausted.

Bruised.

As though someone had beaten him.

"I've been waiting," he said quietly.

I frowned.

"Where's Victor?"

Thomas looked at the floor.

"Too late."

"For what?"

He slowly lifted his eyes.

"Victor isn't trying to escape anymore."

"He already has."

Ross stepped closer.

"Then where is he?"

Thomas swallowed.

"He went back..."

"...to the Sterling estate."

My blood ran cold.

"But the bomb is there."

Thomas nodded.

"I know."

"He wants to be there when it happens."

At that exact moment, Ross's radio exploded with frantic voices from the bomb squad.

"Agent Ross!"

"We've got movement!"

"Inside the mansion!"

"Who is it?"

The answer came back immediately.

"It's Victor Harrington..."

"...and he's not alone."

Ross's grip tightened on his weapon.

"Who's with him?"

The bomb technician hesitated.

Then spoke the words that made my heart stop.

"...He's holding a little girl."

I looked down.

Maya was standing beside me, clutching my hand.

If Maya was here...

May you like

Then who was the little girl inside my mansion?
