Chapter 9: The Choice No Father Should Ever Face

Chapter 9: The Choice No Father Should Ever Face
The command center fell silent.
Every eye was fixed on the drone's live feed.
Victor Harrington stood beside Maya with one hand resting lightly on her shoulder. In his other hand, he held the black remote as if it were nothing more than a television controller.
The bomb technician leaned toward the screen.
"Zoom in another twenty percent."
The image sharpened.
Cables ran around the rusted water tower like veins.
Plastic explosive bricks were attached to the steel supports.
A digital receiver blinked with a tiny red light.
The technician whispered, "Those charges are real."
Agent Ross didn't take his eyes off the monitor.
"Can he detonate them remotely?"
The technician nodded.
"If that remote is paired with the receiver..."
"...yes."
I felt the room spinning around me.
Maya was standing less than ten feet from enough explosives to level half the abandoned paper mill.
Victor's Broadcast
Every monitor in the command center suddenly flickered.
The drone feed disappeared.
Victor's face filled every screen.
He smiled calmly.
"Good evening, everyone."
Agent Ross cursed.
"He's hacked the drone feed."
Victor continued as though he were hosting a business presentation.
"Richard."
"I know you're watching."
"You've always been an intelligent man."
"So I'll make this simple."
He stepped aside.
Maya remained standing exactly where she had been.
She wasn't crying.
She wasn't screaming.
She was watching the ground.
Almost as if she had been told not to move.
Victor looked back into the camera.
"You have one hour."
"If the FBI attempts a rescue..."
"...I press this button."
He lifted the remote slightly.
"If you refuse to cooperate..."
"...I press this button."
I stepped toward the monitor.
"What do you want?"
Victor smiled.
"The truth."
"What truth?"
"The one your wife died trying to protect."
The screen went black.
The Safe Deposit Box
Daniel suddenly stood up.
"The key."
I looked at him.
"What key?"
"The brass key Sarah hid with her letter."
I reached into my jacket pocket.
The small brass key was still there.
Daniel's eyes widened.
"That's not a house key."
"It's a bank key."
Agent Ross frowned.
"You think Sarah left something in a safe deposit box?"
Daniel nodded.
"She wouldn't hide every piece of evidence in the mansion."
Within minutes, a police escort cleared the roads.
We raced to First National Trust Bank in downtown Chicago.
The manager met us at the private vault.
"I've never opened this box."
He inserted one key.
I inserted Sarah's.
The heavy steel door clicked open.
Inside lay only three items.
A leather journal.
A sealed envelope.
A small velvet box.
Sarah's Journal
I opened the journal first.
It was Sarah's handwriting.
The final months of her life.
Page after page described chemotherapy.
Her fears.
Her hopes for Maya.
Then one entry stopped me cold.
March 18
Victor came to the hospital today.
I stared at the page.
Victor?
I kept reading.
He offered me a deal.
If I signed over Maya's guardianship, he promised Richard would never know the truth.
My hands began to shake.
Another page.
March 22
Thomas warned me someone inside the hospital has been bribed.
I no longer trust anyone except Richard.
Another.
March 29
If anything happens to me, it will not be an accident.
I closed the journal.
My vision blurred.
Sarah had known.
She had known her life was in danger.
And she had carried that burden alone.
The Velvet Box
Daniel carefully opened the small velvet box.
Inside was a diamond ring.
Not Sarah's wedding ring.
Underneath it lay a folded note.
Proof of Blood.
Agent Ross looked confused.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel unfolded another hidden card beneath the ring.
It wasn't a love note.
It was a DNA laboratory report.
Names:
Sarah Harrington
Victor Harrington
Relationship Probability:
99.998%
I frowned.
"Cousins?"
Daniel slowly shook his head.
"No."
He handed the report to Agent Ross.
Ross read it once.
Then again.
His face lost all color.
"This doesn't say cousins."
I looked at him.
"It says..."
He swallowed.
"...Victor Harrington is Sarah's biological brother."
The room fell completely silent.
I stared at the paper in disbelief.
"That's impossible."
"Sarah told me she was an only child."
Ross nodded.
"Apparently..."
"...she wasn't."
The Hidden Family Secret
Daniel opened the sealed envelope.
Inside was Sarah's final explanation.
Richard,
If you have reached this point, then Victor has revealed himself.
He is my older brother.
Our father hid his existence after Victor became involved with organized financial crime.
For years, Victor believed our family fortune belonged to him.
When our parents died, they left everything to me because they no longer trusted him.
Victor blamed me for stealing his future.
When Maya was born, he found another way to reclaim what he believed was his.
Never let him convince you that this is about money.
It never was.
It is about revenge.
I folded the letter carefully.
For the first time...
I understood my enemy.
Victor didn't simply want wealth.
He wanted to erase every trace of the family that had rejected him.
And Maya...
...was the last living Harrington he could control.
Maya's Courage
Back at FBI headquarters, the drone team regained partial visual contact with the mill.
A long-range camera focused on Maya.
She still hadn't moved.
Then...
Very slowly...
She looked directly toward the distant camera.
She lowered one hand beside her leg.
Her fingers began moving.
Dot.
Dot.
Dash.
Dot.
The communications analyst leaned forward.
"She's using Morse code again."
Everyone watched in silence.
After several seconds, the message appeared on the screen.
NOT ALONE
Another sequence followed.
BASEMENT
Then...
One final message.
HELP THEM
Agent Ross frowned.
"Help who?"
Before anyone could answer...
Thermal imaging from another drone finished processing.
The operator gasped.
"There are multiple heat signatures beneath the mill."
"How many?"
The operator zoomed in.
His voice trembled.
"One..."
"Five..."
"Twelve..."
He counted again.
Then looked at Agent Ross.
"There are at least twenty-three people locked in the basement."
I felt my stomach drop.
Victor hadn't kidnapped only my daughter.
He had been holding others.
The operation was no longer just a rescue.
It had become the exposure of something far darker.
And somewhere beneath that abandoned mill...
May you like
Twenty-three innocent lives were waiting for someone to find them.
