Chapter 6: Sarah’s Last Secret

Chapter 6: Sarah’s Last Secret
My hands trembled as I picked up the envelope.
For four years, it had been hidden inside the wall of Sarah's study.
Four years...
Waiting for this exact moment.
I didn't want to open it.
Because opening it meant admitting something I had refused to believe—
Sarah had anticipated that one day, our daughter would be in danger.
Daniel stood silently behind me.
"You don't have to read it alone."
I slowly broke the wax seal.
Inside were three items.
A handwritten letter.
A small brass key.
And a flash drive.
My heart pounded.
I unfolded the letter first.
Sarah's Letter
My Dearest Richard,
If you're reading this, then something has happened to Maya.
I pray I'm wrong. I pray this letter never leaves its hiding place. But if it does... you must listen carefully.
I swallowed hard.
Every word felt as though Sarah were standing beside me.
There are things I never told you because I wanted our family to have peace.
Before I became sick, I discovered someone inside Sterling Capital had been stealing from the company.
Daniel looked up immediately.
"The embezzlement..."
I nodded for him to stay quiet.
I kept reading.
I hired a private investigator.
He discovered the theft wasn't about money alone.
Someone wanted access to Maya's inheritance.
I stopped breathing.
Maya's Inheritance
Daniel frowned.
"Inheritance?"
"I already knew she inherited my estate."
He shook his head.
"No."
"I handled your wills."
"There wasn't anything unusual."
I returned to the letter.
Richard, after my diagnosis, I changed my will without telling anyone except my attorney, Harold Bennett.
Everything belonging to my parents' family was placed into a separate trust for Maya.
No spouse, no future children, and not even you can alter it.
Daniel stared at me.
"I've never heard of this trust."
"Neither have I."
Sarah had kept it from everyone.
Including me.
A Billion-Dollar Secret
I opened the second folded document tucked inside the envelope.
It wasn't a will.
It was a trust summary.
I scanned the numbers once.
Then again.
"This can't be right."
Daniel took the paper from my hand.
His eyes widened.
"My God..."
"What?"
"The Harrington Family Trust..."
He looked at me in disbelief.
"...is worth nearly one billion dollars."
The room fell silent.
Sarah had never spoken about her family's wealth.
She hated discussing money.
She always said,
"Love is measured by how you protect people—not by what you own."
Now I understood why she had hidden everything.
Maya wasn't simply my daughter.
She was the sole heir to one of the largest private family trusts in Illinois.
The Flash Drive
I inserted Sarah's flash drive into my laptop.
One video file appeared.
The timestamp showed it had been recorded just three weeks before Sarah passed away.
I clicked Play.
Sarah appeared on the screen.
She looked weak from chemotherapy.
Her hair was gone.
But her smile...
It was still the smile I had fallen in love with.
"Hi, Richard."
Her voice immediately brought tears to my eyes.
"If you're watching this, then I wasn't paranoid."
She took a slow breath.
"I know someone has been watching our family."
"I don't know who."
"But I know why."
She reached for a folder beside her.
"I found records proving that members of my father's old business circle have been searching for Maya since she was born."
Daniel leaned closer.
Sarah continued.
"They believe controlling Maya means controlling the Harrington fortune."
She smiled sadly.
"They're wrong."
"The trust cannot be accessed until Maya turns twenty-five."
"Unless..."
Sarah hesitated.
"Unless Maya dies before then."
My blood ran cold.
"The money doesn't disappear."
She looked directly into the camera.
"It transfers to the acting legal guardian."
The room became deathly still.
Daniel whispered,
"Oh, God..."
Sarah continued.
"If someone marries you..."
"...and becomes Maya's legal guardian..."
"...they could inherit everything."
The realization hit me like a freight train.
Eleanor hadn't married me because she loved me.
She had married me because of Maya.
Harold Bennett
Daniel immediately grabbed his phone.
"I'm calling Harold Bennett."
"No answer."
He tried again.
Still nothing.
A third time.
Voicemail.
"That's strange."
"He always answers."
Marcus entered the study.
"Sir."
"We have an update."
"Tell me."
"We traced Eleanor's last financial transfer."
"Where?"
"To a consulting company."
"Owned by?"
Marcus hesitated.
"The Harrington Group."
Daniel looked confused.
"That's impossible."
"The Harrington Group dissolved fifteen years ago."
Marcus nodded.
"So we thought."
He handed over a report.
The company had been quietly reactivated eight months earlier.
Its new director...
Victor Harrington.
I stared at the name.
"I've never met him."
Daniel looked horrified.
"You have."
"What?"
"Victor Harrington is Sarah's cousin."
I felt the room spin.
"Sarah told me her family had almost no one left."
Daniel slowly shook his head.
"Not no one."
"Just no one she trusted."
The Call from Maya
Suddenly...
My phone buzzed.
An incoming video call.
Unknown number.
I answered without hesitation.
The screen flickered.
Then Maya appeared.
She was sitting in a dimly lit room.
She wasn't crying.
She wasn't tied up.
She looked frightened...
But unharmed.
"Daddy..."
"I'm here, sweetheart."
"I'm okay."
Before I could ask where she was...
A man walked into view behind her.
Tall.
Silver-haired.
Perfectly tailored suit.
He placed a gentle hand on Maya's shoulder.
She flinched.
The man smiled into the camera.
"Good evening, Richard."
"I assume you've read Sarah's letter."
"Who are you?"
"My name..."
He smiled wider.
"...is Victor Harrington."
"The man your wife was working for."
He paused just long enough for my heart to sink.
"But she never realized..."
"...she was only the first piece on the board."
May you like
The screen went black.
