Chapter 8: The Truth About Sarah’s Last Night

Chapter 8: The Truth About Sarah’s Last Night

Thomas Bennett's words echoed through the parking garage.

"The night Sarah died... she wasn't alone."

For several seconds, no one spoke.

The only sound was the distant hum of fluorescent lights overhead.

I tightened my grip on Thomas's collar.

"What did you just say?"

He looked away.

"I never wanted it to happen."

"You'd better start talking."

A Secret Buried for Four Years

FBI agents handcuffed Thomas and escorted him to an interrogation room at headquarters.

Agent Ross closed the door behind us.

A digital recorder clicked on.

"State your name."

"Thomas Bennett."

"Were you employed by Sterling Capital?"

"Yes."

"Were you working for Victor Harrington?"

Thomas nodded.

"For six years."

I felt sick.

Six years.

He had attended family dinners.

Watched Maya grow up.

Stood beside me at Sarah's funeral.

All while secretly reporting to Victor.

"Why?" I asked.

Thomas stared at the table.

"Because Victor owned me."

The Debt

Thomas finally confessed.

Fifteen years earlier, before joining Sterling Capital, he had owned a small investment firm.

The business failed.

He accumulated millions in debt.

Victor Harrington approached him with an offer.

"I'll erase every dollar you owe."

"In exchange?"

"You'll tell me everything happening inside Sterling Capital."

Thomas lowered his head.

"I thought it was only corporate espionage."

"So I agreed."

"But after Sarah became ill..."

"...everything changed."

Sarah Knew

Thomas wiped tears from his eyes.

"Sarah was smarter than all of us."

"She discovered money disappearing."

"She also discovered someone was following Maya."

I swallowed hard.

"What did she do?"

"She confronted me."

"When?"

"Three weeks before she died."

I remembered the timeline.

The same time Sarah recorded the flash drive.

Thomas continued.

"She already knew I was leaking information."

"Instead of calling the police..."

"...she asked me one question."

"What question?"

"'Do you still know the difference between right and wrong?'"

The room fell silent.

"She told me she forgave me."

He laughed bitterly.

"She forgave the man betraying her."

The Final Meeting

"Sarah asked me to meet her the night before she died."

"Where?"

"At St. Andrew's Church."

"Why there?"

"She said it was the only place Victor's people wouldn't expect."

Thomas reached into his jacket.

Agent Ross immediately stopped him.

"It's okay."

Thomas slowly removed a folded photograph.

"I've carried this for four years."

The picture showed Sarah standing outside the church.

She looked weak from chemotherapy.

But she was smiling.

Standing beside her...

Was Thomas.

"You met her."

"Yes."

"What happened?"

Thomas closed his eyes.

"She handed me a folder."

"She said if anything happened to her..."

"...I had to protect Maya."

I frowned.

"Then why didn't you?"

His voice broke.

"Because I failed."

The Hospital

"The next morning," Thomas whispered, "Sarah called me."

"She sounded frightened."

"She told me someone had entered her hospital room during the night."

My heart pounded.

"Who?"

"She didn't know."

"But she said..."

"...her medical chart had disappeared."

Daniel looked at Agent Ross.

"Hospital records."

Ross nodded.

"If someone wanted to alter treatment..."

"They'd need the chart."

Thomas continued.

"Sarah begged me to meet her."

"But before I arrived..."

"...she was gone."

Not an Accident

Agent Ross placed several hospital reports on the table.

"We reopened Sarah's medical file this morning."

He slid one document toward me.

"The original records were altered."

I stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

"The dosage of one chemotherapy medication doesn't match the dosage she actually received."

Daniel frowned.

"Could that happen by accident?"

Ross shook his head.

"Our medical consultants don't believe so."

The room became painfully quiet.

"You mean..."

Ross met my eyes.

"We believe someone intentionally changed her treatment."

I felt every ounce of strength leave my body.

For four years...

I believed cancer had taken Sarah.

Now...

There was a chance someone had helped it happen.

Maya's Drawing

Before anyone could speak again, Marcus rushed into the room.

"Sir."

"We found something in Maya's bedroom."

He handed me a folded piece of construction paper.

"I missed it during the first search."

It was one of Maya's drawings.

At first glance, it looked ordinary.

A little girl.

A big house.

A smiling father.

But in the corner...

She had drawn a tall red tower beside a river.

Above it, in careful handwriting, were five words.

The place with loud birds.

Agent Ross studied the drawing.

"Loud birds?"

Marcus suddenly snapped his fingers.

"The abandoned paper mill."

"Thousands of red-winged blackbirds nest there every summer."

Ross nodded.

"That's our location."

The Rescue Plan

By sunset, the FBI command center was fully operational.

Satellite images covered the walls.

Maps of the paper mill lay across a large conference table.

SWAT commanders reviewed entry points.

Marcus pointed to the north entrance.

"Too exposed."

Ross pointed to the river.

"They'll expect an assault from the road."

Daniel looked at me.

"Richard..."

"You stay here."

I didn't even hesitate.

"No."

"This is an FBI operation."

"She's my daughter."

Ross stepped between us.

"If Victor sees you..."

"...he may panic."

"I don't care."

"I do."

Ross paused.

"Your daughter needs a father."

"Not another victim."

I looked around the room.

Every instinct told me to go.

Every rational thought told me Ross was right.

Then...

One of the surveillance specialists shouted.

"Sir!"

Everyone turned.

A drone flying over the abandoned mill had just transmitted live images.

The camera zoomed toward the roof.

Standing beside the rusted red water tower...

Was Maya.

She was alone.

Wearing the same oversized gray sweatshirt.

Looking out across the river.

Then she slowly lifted her face toward the drone.

Even from hundreds of feet away...

I could see the fear in her eyes.

Suddenly...

A hand reached into frame from behind her.

Victor Harrington's hand.

He gently rested it on Maya's shoulder...

...and looked directly up at the drone.

Then he smiled.

And with one deliberate motion...

He raised a small black remote control.

Agent Ross's face went white.

"Oh, no..."

One of the bomb technicians lunged toward the monitor.

"Zoom in!"

The image sharpened.

Strapped around the base of the water tower...

May you like

...were dozens of explosive charges.
