Chapter 11: Into the Fire

Chapter 11: Into the Fire

The explosion hit like an earthquake.

The live video feed from Agent Ross's helmet shook violently before dissolving into static. A second later, the signal returned in brief, jerky flashes.

Dust.

Smoke.

Screams.

Then darkness again.

I gripped the edge of the operations table so hard my knuckles turned white.

"Ross!"

No answer.

"Marcus!"

Only static.

A communications officer adjusted the signal.

"We're still connected... barely."

The image stabilized just enough to reveal the basement engulfed in gray smoke.

Pieces of concrete littered the floor.

One of the steel cages had collapsed.

The hostages were screaming.

"Rescue the Hostages!"

Ross's voice finally came through.

"Cough... Team One, free the prisoners!"

"Team Two, find Maya!"

"Bomb squad, locate the secondary devices!"

The tactical team split instantly.

Bolt cutters snapped through the locks of the cages.

A young woman stumbled out, carrying a frightened little boy no older than six.

An elderly man collapsed the moment he was freed.

A medic caught him before he hit the floor.

Marcus sprinted toward the hidden steel door where Maya and the mysterious elderly woman had disappeared.

"They went this way!"

The Hidden Tunnel

The secret passage twisted beneath the old mill.

The walls were reinforced with fresh concrete—far newer than the abandoned building above.

"This wasn't built by factory workers," Marcus muttered.

Ross nodded.

"Someone invested millions down here."

Security cameras lined the ceiling.

Modern lighting.

Steel doors.

Encrypted keypads.

It looked less like an escape tunnel and more like an underground headquarters.

Marcus suddenly stopped.

"Footprints."

Small footprints.

Maya's.

Alongside a larger set that belonged to the elderly woman.

"They're alive."

The Woman Who Knew Sarah

Meanwhile, I refused to stay behind any longer.

Ignoring every protest, I climbed into an armored FBI vehicle with Daniel.

"If Victor escapes with Maya..."

"I'll never forgive myself."

Agent Ross reluctantly approved.

"You stay behind the tactical line."

I agreed.

Though deep down, I already knew I wouldn't.

The Underground Chapel

Marcus pushed open another steel door.

Beyond it lay a room unlike anything anyone expected.

Wooden pews.

Stained-glass windows.

Candles.

An underground chapel.

The elderly woman stood in front of the altar.

Maya clung tightly to her hand.

Ross slowly lowered his weapon.

"It's okay."

"We're here to help."

The woman smiled gently.

"I know."

Her voice was calm despite the explosions echoing through the tunnels.

"You took your time."

Marcus looked confused.

"Who are you?"

She looked at Maya first.

Then at Ross.

"My name is Grace."

"I've been waiting for Richard Sterling for four years."

Sarah's Promise

I entered the chapel seconds later.

The moment Grace saw me...

She began to cry.

"You came."

I rushed to Maya.

She threw herself into my arms.

"Daddy!"

I held her so tightly she laughed through her tears.

"I thought I'd never see you again."

"You'll never lose me again."

For a long moment, nothing else existed.

Not Victor.

Not the FBI.

Not the explosions.

Only my daughter.

Finally, Grace spoke.

"Sarah knew you would come."

I slowly turned toward her.

"You knew my wife?"

Grace nodded.

"She saved my life."

I stared in disbelief.

"How?"

"Years ago, I worked for the Harrington family."

"I was Maya's nanny after she was born."

My heart skipped.

"I've seen your picture."

Grace smiled sadly.

"So Sarah kept it."

"She trusted you."

"I didn't deserve it."

She reached into her coat pocket and handed me a small silver locket.

"She asked me to give you this..."

"...if Victor ever came for Maya."

The Locket

Inside the locket was a tiny memory card.

Daniel carefully inserted it into a laptop brought by the FBI technicians.

One audio recording appeared.

Sarah's voice filled the chapel.

"Richard...

If you're hearing this, then Grace survived.

Thank God."

I closed my eyes.

It felt like hearing Sarah speak from beyond time.

"Victor believes he understands the Harrington Trust.

He doesn't.

The final authorization requires something he can never obtain."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What is it?"

Sarah answered as if she had heard him.

"Maya's voluntary signature after her twenty-fifth birthday."

Ross smiled for the first time all day.

"So Victor can't steal the trust."

Grace nodded.

"He never could."

I frowned.

"Then why kidnap Maya?"

Grace's expression darkened.

"Because Victor no longer wants the money."

"What does he want?"

She whispered,

"Revenge."

Victor's Real Plan

Another explosion echoed above.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

Grace looked directly at me.

"Victor believes Sarah destroyed his family."

"She didn't."

"But he convinced himself she did."

"So now..."

"...he wants the Harrington bloodline to end."

I looked down at Maya.

She squeezed my hand.

Grace continued,

"Maya was never a hostage."

"She was bait."

Ross frowned.

"Bait for whom?"

Grace answered quietly.

"For you."

Before anyone could react...

Every light in the chapel went out.

Emergency lights flickered red.

A hidden speaker crackled to life.

Victor's voice echoed through the room.

"Touching reunion."

He sounded almost amused.

"I was wondering how long it would take all of you to gather in one place."

Ross looked around.

"Everyone down!"

Victor laughed.

"You still don't understand."

"The explosives beneath the mill..."

"...were never the real bombs."

The bomb technician's radio erupted with panic.

"Agent Ross!"

"We've found another network!"

"Where?"

The technician's voice shook.

"It's not under the mill..."

He paused.

Then delivered the words that froze every person in the chapel.

May you like

"...It's underneath the Sterling estate."
