Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden Behind the Walls

Chapter 3: The Secret Hidden Behind the Walls
The life insurance policy slipped from my fingers and landed on the dining table.
Twenty million dollars.
My name.
Eleanor's signature.
The date.
Everything was real.
I looked at my wife—the woman I had trusted with my home, my heart, and most importantly, my daughter.
"Tell me I'm wrong," I said quietly.
She stared back without blinking.
"I can explain."
"No."
I shook my head.
"Not another explanation."
Daniel stepped beside me.
"We've already confirmed the policy is authentic."
Eleanor's eyes flashed toward him.
"You hired someone to spy on me?"
"I hired someone to protect my client," Daniel replied calmly.
"You've been transferring money through shell companies for months."
She folded her arms.
"You have no proof those accounts belong to me."
Daniel smiled faintly.
"I do now."
He held up the flash drive Maria had given me.
"You forgot that modern security systems record more than video."
Eleanor's confidence faltered.
"They record audio too."
For the first time all night, she looked genuinely panicked.
Upstairs
I left Daniel in the dining room and hurried upstairs.
Maria was sitting beside Maya's bed, gently brushing her hair while she slept.
The sight nearly broke me.
Maya looked so small beneath the oversized blanket.
Her breathing was shallow.
Dark circles rested beneath her eyes.
She should have looked like a carefree nine-year-old.
Instead...
She looked exhausted.
Maria quietly stood.
"I'll give you a moment."
Before leaving, she placed something in my hand.
A tiny pink notebook.
"I found this under Maya's mattress."
"She hides it every morning."
When Maria closed the bedroom door behind her, I slowly opened the notebook.
The first page was covered with childish handwriting.
Dear Mommy,
Daddy says you're in Heaven.
I hope they let you eat dinner there every night.
My vision blurred.
I turned the page.
Eleanor says I'm not real family.
She says Daddy only keeps me because he feels guilty.
Another page.
Today I got chicken after everyone finished eating.
It was cold but I was very thankful.
Another.
I tried not to cry because crying makes Eleanor angry.
Another.
Daddy smiles when he calls me.
I don't tell him because I don't want him to worry while working.
I couldn't read anymore.
Tears rolled down my face.
I had spent years building one of the largest investment firms in Illinois.
I had negotiated billion-dollar mergers.
Outsmarted ruthless competitors.
Protected thousands of employees.
Yet somehow...
I had failed to protect the one little girl who needed me most.
I gently kissed Maya's forehead.
"I'm so sorry."
She didn't wake.
The Basement
Around midnight, Daniel called me downstairs.
"You need to see this."
Our head of security, Marcus Hayes, stood beside a wall of surveillance monitors.
He had worked for my family for nearly twenty years.
"I couldn't access these files before," Marcus explained.
"Mrs. Sterling changed the administrator password."
"Tonight I restored the original backup."
The screens flickered.
Then security footage began playing.
Day after day.
Week after week.
Month after month.
There was Maya...
Walking toward the dining room.
Eleanor blocking her path.
Pointing toward the pantry.
Another clip.
Maya reaching for fruit.
Eleanor slapping her hand away.
Another.
The chef placing a dinner plate on the counter.
Eleanor taking it...
...and dumping it into the trash.
Instead, she handed Maya instant noodles.
Another video.
Maya quietly cleaning the dining room after Eleanor's guests left.
She couldn't have been more than eight years old.
Another.
Eleanor screaming at her.
No audio was needed.
The fear on Maya's face said everything.
Marcus paused the recording.
"I'm sorry, sir."
"I should have found a way to tell you."
"Why didn't you?"
He lowered his head.
"Mrs. Sterling threatened every employee."
"She said she'd accuse us of stealing."
"She knew most of us couldn't afford lawyers."
Daniel looked furious.
"She isolated everyone."
Marcus nodded.
"Except one person."
He clicked another video.
The timestamp showed three weeks earlier.
Late at night.
Almost midnight.
The mansion should have been empty.
Instead...
A man entered through the back door.
Tall.
Athletic.
Dark hair.
The same man from the surveillance photographs.
He hugged Eleanor.
Then...
They walked together into Richard's private office.
Marcus fast-forwarded.
Forty-two minutes later...
The man left carrying several file boxes.
"What was inside those boxes?" I asked.
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
"I checked the inventory."
"My financial records?"
He nodded.
"Company files."
Daniel immediately picked up his phone.
"We need to freeze every corporate account."
Before he could dial...
Marcus spoke again.
"Sir..."
"There was one more thing."
He switched to another camera.
The office.
Three nights ago.
Eleanor stood beside my antique bourbon cabinet.
She removed a small bottle from her purse.
Unscrewed the cap.
Poured a clear liquid into my favorite whiskey.
Then she smiled.
The timestamp ended.
Nobody spoke.
The room felt frozen.
Finally Daniel whispered,
"That wasn't theft."
I stared at the screen.
"No."
His voice became deadly serious.
"Richard..."
"I think she was trying to poison you."
At that exact moment...
A loud crash echoed upstairs.
Glass shattered.
Maria screamed.
"MAYA!"
I didn't wait.
I sprinted toward the staircase two steps at a time, my heart pounding harder than ever before.
When I reached Maya's bedroom...
The window was wide open.
The curtains whipped violently in the wind.
Maria was kneeling on the floor, crying.
The bed...
Was empty.
May you like
Maya was gone.
