Chapter 7: The Man Behind Everything

Chapter 7: The Man Behind Everything

Victor Harrington's face lingered in my mind long after the video call ended.

The screen had gone black.

But his smile...

It was the smile of a man who believed he had already won.

I stood frozen in Sarah's study, my phone still clutched in my hand.

Daniel broke the silence.

"We're dealing with someone who's been planning this for years."

I nodded slowly.

"No."

"For decades."

The FBI Arrives

Just after sunrise, three black SUVs rolled through the gates of the Sterling estate.

Detective Carter walked in beside two men wearing navy windbreakers with yellow letters across the back.

FBI.

The taller agent introduced himself.

"Special Agent Michael Ross."

He shook my hand firmly.

"We've been monitoring Victor Harrington for nearly three years."

I stared at him.

"Three years?"

Ross nodded.

"We suspected him of international financial fraud."

"But every witness disappeared."

"Every document vanished."

"And everyone willing to testify suddenly changed their story."

He looked around the room.

"Until your daughter was kidnapped."

Daniel frowned.

"So this isn't just about money."

Ross's expression darkened.

"It never was."

Eleanor Breaks

Marcus entered the library.

"We found her."

I looked up.

"Eleanor?"

He nodded.

"She was hiding at the Lakewood Hotel under a false name."

"Bring her in."

Two hours later, Eleanor sat across from me in the library.

Gone was the elegant woman who had hosted lavish dinner parties.

Her makeup had run.

Her designer clothes were wrinkled.

She looked exhausted.

She refused to meet my eyes.

Finally, she whispered,

"I never wanted Maya to be taken."

I laughed bitterly.

"You expect me to believe that?"

She looked up.

"I swear."

"You abused her."

"Yes."

"You humiliated her."

"...Yes."

"You tried to steal her inheritance."

Tears rolled down her face.

"...Yes."

"But I never agreed to kidnap her."

I leaned closer.

"Then tell me everything."

For the next hour, Eleanor confessed.

She admitted meeting Victor Harrington almost a year before she married me.

Victor had approached her at a charity gala.

He knew about my company.

He knew about Sarah.

Most importantly...

He knew about Maya.

"He promised me a fortune," Eleanor said quietly.

"He told me all I had to do was marry you."

"And then?"

"He said he'd handle everything else."

I clenched my fists.

"What does 'everything else' mean?"

She shook her head.

"I didn't ask."

"I didn't want to know."

The Hidden Message

Meanwhile, FBI technicians analyzed the video Victor had sent.

One young analyst suddenly raised his hand.

"Agent Ross."

"You need to see this."

The video zoomed in on Maya.

She sat perfectly still.

Too still.

Then the analyst froze a single frame.

Maya's left hand rested on her knee.

Her fingers weren't relaxed.

She was tapping.

Ross frowned.

"What is she doing?"

The analyst smiled.

"It's Morse code."

My heart skipped.

"Maya knows Morse code?"

I smiled despite everything.

"Sarah taught her."

The analyst translated each tap.

Dot.

Dash.

Dot.

Dash.

Several minutes later, words appeared on the screen.

RED WATER TOWER

Marcus immediately unfolded a county map.

"There are eleven abandoned water towers within fifty miles."

Ross shook his head.

"No."

"There are only two painted red."

One had been demolished years ago.

The other...

Sat beside an abandoned paper mill near the Fox River.

Someone Inside My Company

Before the FBI team could leave, Daniel received another call from Sterling Capital's headquarters.

His face immediately changed.

"What happened?"

"Our internal server."

"What about it?"

"Someone accessed every confidential file overnight."

Marcus looked confused.

"From where?"

Daniel swallowed.

"Inside the building."

I frowned.

"That's impossible."

"The building's been locked since yesterday."

Ross stood.

"Unless someone already had access."

Twenty minutes later, we arrived at company headquarters.

The front doors showed no signs of forced entry.

Neither did the executive offices.

The security system had been disabled...

Using an executive access card.

Marcus checked the log.

Then looked up slowly.

"Oh, no."

"Whose card?"

He hesitated.

"The card belongs to..."

He looked directly at me.

"...Thomas Bennett."

I froze.

"My Chief Financial Officer?"

Marcus nodded.

Daniel looked equally stunned.

"Thomas has worked for you for fifteen years."

"He helped build this company."

"I know."

The elevator doors suddenly opened.

Thomas stepped out carrying a leather briefcase.

He stopped when he saw us.

His face turned pale.

"Richard..."

He forced a smile.

"I wasn't expecting you."

Ross immediately stepped forward.

"FBI."

Thomas's smile disappeared.

"We need to ask you several questions."

Thomas looked toward the hallway.

Toward the emergency exit.

Then back at us.

For one brief second...

He made a decision.

He ran.

The Chase

Thomas sprinted through the executive floor.

Marcus and two FBI agents chased after him.

"Stop!"

He ignored them.

Employees scattered in panic.

Thomas shoved open the emergency stairwell door.

Marcus followed only seconds behind.

I raced after them.

Down twelve flights of stairs.

Thomas burst into the underground parking garage.

A black sedan waited with its engine running.

Someone was inside.

The passenger door flew open.

"Get in!"

Thomas dove toward the car.

Marcus tackled him from behind.

Both men slammed into the concrete.

The briefcase flew from Thomas's hands.

Its contents scattered across the garage floor.

Hundreds of documents.

Bank records.

Passports.

Cash.

And one photograph.

I picked it up.

It showed Victor Harrington...

Standing beside Thomas.

The picture had been taken nearly six years earlier.

Long before Eleanor entered my life.

Daniel stared at the photograph in disbelief.

"This wasn't Eleanor's operation."

I slowly looked at Thomas.

"You've been working for Victor all along."

Thomas closed his eyes.

Then quietly said the words that changed everything.

"No..."

"You still don't understand."

I grabbed his collar.

"Then help me understand."

He looked directly into my eyes.

"I wasn't spying on you."

"I was spying on Sarah."

The garage fell completely silent.

Thomas took one shaky breath.

"And the night Sarah died..."

May you like

"...she wasn't alone."
