Chapter 4: The Night They Took Maya

Chapter 4: The Night They Took Maya
For one terrifying second, my mind refused to accept what I was seeing.
The bed was empty.
The blanket still lay folded back where Maya had been sleeping only minutes earlier.
Rain poured through the open window, soaking the hardwood floor.
Maria was trembling.
"I'm so sorry, Mr. Sterling!"
I grabbed her shoulders.
"What happened?"
She struggled to breathe.
"I—I stepped into the bathroom to get Maya a glass of water. I was gone less than a minute."
She pointed toward the broken window.
"When I came back... she was gone."
I rushed to the window.
The drop to the garden below was nearly twelve feet.
A flower bed had been crushed.
Fresh footprints marked the muddy ground.
Someone had been here.
Someone had taken my daughter.
"Lock Down the Estate!"
I spun toward Marcus, who had just reached the hallway with two security guards.
"Seal every gate!"
"Nobody leaves this property!"
Marcus was already speaking into his radio.
"Lockdown protocol! Close the front gate, the service entrance, and the east driveway. Search teams to sectors Alpha through Delta. Move!"
Within seconds, alarms echoed throughout the estate.
Floodlights illuminated the gardens.
Security vehicles sped across the property.
I had designed this estate to keep my family safe.
Tonight, it had become the scene of a kidnapping.
Eleanor Was Gone
Daniel emerged from downstairs, his face pale.
"Richard..."
"Eleanor's disappeared."
"What?"
"She's gone."
We rushed to the master bedroom.
Her closet doors were wide open.
Half her designer clothes were missing.
Her jewelry case was empty.
The safe behind the painting stood open.
Inside...
Nothing.
Even her passport was gone.
Daniel cursed under his breath.
"She planned this."
Marcus entered moments later.
"Sir."
"We found tire tracks behind the greenhouse."
"A black SUV left through the maintenance road."
"When?"
"Less than five minutes ago."
I didn't hesitate.
"Get the cars."
The Chase
Three black SUVs tore through the rain-soaked roads outside the estate.
Marcus drove.
Daniel sat beside him, speaking with the police.
I sat in the back, staring at the GPS tracker on my phone.
Years ago, after Maya wandered away in a crowded amusement park, Sarah had insisted we hide a tiny emergency tracker inside Maya's favorite bracelet.
She had laughed when I called her overprotective.
"One day you'll thank me," she'd said.
Tonight...
I thanked her.
The blinking dot moved along Interstate 88.
Heading west.
"They're thirty minutes ahead," Marcus said.
"Can we catch them?"
"If traffic stays light."
The rain intensified.
Lightning flashed across the sky.
Every minute felt like an hour.
The Call
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered immediately.
"Maya?"
Instead...
Eleanor laughed.
"You always did love dramatic entrances."
"Where's my daughter?"
"She's sleeping."
"If you hurt her—"
"Oh, Richard."
Her voice was strangely calm.
"I've never wanted the child."
"Then why take her?"
There was a pause.
"Because she's worth more alive than dead."
Daniel looked at me sharply.
I put the phone on speaker.
"What does that mean?"
"You'll understand soon enough."
"Eleanor."
"I'm listening."
"If you ever want to see Maya again..."
"...withdraw every accusation."
"No."
"Transfer fifty million dollars into the account I'll send you."
"No."
"Sign over controlling interest in Sterling Capital."
"No."
Her voice turned cold.
"You seem confused."
"You don't have choices."
"I do."
"You have one."
"Bring Maya home."
She laughed again.
"You're still underestimating me."
The call disconnected.
A Mother's Bracelet
Twenty minutes later, the GPS signal suddenly stopped moving.
Marcus slowed the SUV.
"We're close."
The tracker showed a location deep inside an abandoned industrial district outside Aurora.
Old warehouses.
Broken factories.
Empty parking lots.
Perfect for hiding.
The police surrounded the area.
SWAT officers quietly took positions.
Marcus pointed toward Warehouse 17.
"The signal's inside."
I was already opening the door.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
"Richard."
"You can't go in."
"My daughter is in there."
"And if this is a trap?"
"I don't care."
I wasn't losing another member of my family.
Not again.
Inside Warehouse 17
The massive steel door creaked open.
Darkness.
The smell of oil and rust filled the air.
Flashlights swept across broken machinery.
Empty crates.
Dust.
"Clear."
"Clear."
"Nothing here."
Then...
One officer shouted.
"Over here!"
I ran toward him.
On the concrete floor lay Maya's bracelet.
The tiny GPS tracker had been ripped out.
Beside it...
A folded piece of paper.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Only six words were written in neat handwriting.
YOU'RE LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE.
Daniel slowly looked around the warehouse.
"Richard..."
"This wasn't the destination."
"It was a distraction."
Before anyone could react...
Marcus' radio exploded with frantic voices.
"Control to all units!"
"We have an emergency!"
Marcus grabbed the radio.
"Go ahead!"
"The black SUV has just been found."
"Location?"
"Five miles south."
"Status?"
The dispatcher hesitated.
Then spoke the words I feared most.
"The vehicle is empty..."
May you like
"...but there's blood inside."
